  • Two laboratory-melt heats of 3.25 silicon-iron were made and processed according to a normal commercial practice. Some of the important processing variables that were studied in relation to secondary recrystallization and texture development were contents of manganese and sulfur, heat-treatments after hot-rolling that were used to achieve different hot-rolled microstructures, and amounts of second cold-reduction. The main effort of the present study was directed toward elucidating the relationships among the amount of second cold-reduction, activation energies associated with secondary recrystallization and texture development. The specimens that had been cold-reduced 10% exhibited only grain growth by strain-induced grain boundary migration and did not exhibit secondary recrystallization. Secondary recrystallization did rot appear to completely occur in the 30% cold-reduced specimens, although the nucleation for secondary recrystallization was observed. The second cold-reduction in an amount of 50% was shown to be the optimun for secondary recrystallization and texture development by subsequent processing.

  • In order to develop a technology for the recovery of pure tin from the Sn containing industrial wastes (SIWs), a process consisted of high temperature reduction and electrorefining was investigated. The tin which exists as oxide in SIWs was successfully reduced by two consecutive high temperature treatments and 92.7% of the tin was recovered. The purity of the tin thus obtained was increased to 99.87% by electrorefining. By applying the results obtained in this work, a commercial process can be developed to produce pure tin metals from domestic spent resources, which can reduce the amount of tin imported from abroad.

  • Biological effect of aqueous extracts of 12 plants which showed superoxide dismutase (SOD)-like activity in vitro was evaluated using Drosophila melanogaster. Survival percentage of the flies was a criterion of effect when the flies were exported to paraquat, which generated superoxide anion radical in vivo. When flies were co-administered with paraquat and aqueous extracts of garlic, lettuce, kiwi, and nameko, they showed no defensive effect against of oxygen toxicity. If flies were exposed to 60 mM paraquat after adaptation to feed containing plant extracts with SOD-like activity for 10 days, however, survival percentage of flies fed with phytochemicals was $35{\sim}63%$ while that percentage of flies fed without phytochemical was only 11%. This result indicated that adaptation of flies to plant extracts with SOD-like activity could prevent the flies from oxidative injury. On the other hand, lettuce, kiwi, nameko, onion, persimmon, fern brake and cauliflower showed a reparative effect on an oxidative stress. Dropwort, shiitake, agaric mushroom and broccoli did not show such an effect.

  • Conversion of propane to acrylonitrile via ammoxidation was studied using physically mixed catalysts composed of $Nb_2O_5(10{\sim}30wt%)$ and $V_{0.4}Mo_1Te_{0.1}$. Catalytic activities of ammoxidation were improved by adding strong acidic niobium oxide to $V_{0.4}Mo_1Te_{0.1}$, the selectivities to acrylonitrile+propylene being remained constant. The maximum activity was obtained at the mixing ratio 25wt% niobium oxide in $Nb_2O_5-V_{0.4}Mo_1Te_{0.1}$. Niobium oxide was found to be a selective catalyst for the oxidative dehydrogenation of propane.

  • Recently epoxy resin compositions having backbone of novolac derivatives with biphenylene compounds have been used as materials of eco-freindly EMC (Epoxy Molding Compound), because the cured epoxy resin compositions show the self-extinguishing without flame retardant additives. In this study, epoxy resin compositions were prepared and cured using novolac derivateves with biphenylene. Their propeties - structures of phenol derivatives and reactivity, thermal expansion, modulus, and thermal degradation - were obtained by DSC, DMA, TMA, TGA method. When both epoxy resin and hardenr had the biphenyl novolac structure, epoxy resin compositions showed low thermal expansion, good mechanical property, and combustion retardation.

  • This study presents experimental and numerical results of the temperature characteristics, the heat transfer phenomema, and the heat storage quantity during the heat storage process with sodium phyrophosphate decahydrate($Na_4P_2O_7{\cdot}10H_2O$)-Phase Change Material(PCM) in a latent heat storage tank(cubic type). It was proved that heat transfer by conduction was dominant because PCM($Na_4P_2O_7{\cdot}10H_2O$) during heating processes was gel phase, not liquid phase The gap ratio(rate of air content) of PCM became smaller, the thermal capacity of PCM became larger, therefore the temperature distribution of PCM slowly increased than that of large gap ratio. There was maximum 15% difference between measured temperatures and calculated temperatures.
