PHYSICAL PROPERTIES AND SURFACE TOPOGRAPHY OF ORTHODONTIC STAINLESS STEEL WIRES : COMPARING A NEW KOREAN PRODUCT WITH OTHERS FROM FOREIGN COMPANIES (여러 스테인레스 스틸 호선의 물성 및 표면의 비교)

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the property of a new Korean stainless steel wire(Jinsung Ind.) comparing with other foreign Products. Five types of stainless steel wires (Standard, Resilient, HI-T of Unitek, Stainless steel of Ormco and Jinsung Ind.) in 0.016x0.022 and 0.019x0.02 were tested to observe for Composition analysis, size difference, tensile properties, flexure bending property, tortion property, surface hardness and surface topography by means of SEM. The findings suggest that: 1. In maximum tensile strength of tensile properties, Unitek Hi-T showed the greatest value, followed by Unitek Resilient, Jinsung Stainless Steel, Ormco Stainless Steel, Unitek Standard in 0.016x0.022, and Unitek Hi-T showed highest value, followed by Jinsung Stainless Steel, Ormco Stainless Steel, Unitek Resilient, Unitek Standard in 0.019x 0.025. 2. In elongation rate, Unitek Standard showed the greatest value, fellowed by Ormco Stainless Steel, Unitek Hi-T, Unitek Resilient, Jinsung Stainless Steel in 0.016x0.022, and Unitek Hi-T showed the highest value, followed by Unitek Standard, Ormco Stainless Steel, Jinsung Stainless Steel, Unitek Resilient in 0.019x0.025. 3. In modulus of elasticity, Jinsung Stainless Steel showed the greatest value, followed by Unitek Hi-T, Unitek Resilient, Ormco Stainless Steel, Unitek Standard in 0.016x0.022, and Unitek Resilient showed the highest value followed by Jinsung Stainless Steel, Ormco Stainless Steel, Unitek Hi-T, Unitek Standard in 0.019x0.025. 4. In bending fatigue test, Jinsung Stainless Steel showed the greatest fracture resistance, followed by Unitek Hi-T, Unitek Standard, Unitek Resilient, Ormco Stainless Steel in 0.016x0.022, and Unitek Hi-T showed the greatest fracture resistance followed by Jinsung Stainless Steel, Unitek Resilient, Unitek Standard, Ormco Stainless Steel in 0.019x0.025. 5. In twist test, Unitek Resilient showed the greatest fracture resistance, followed by Jinsung Stainless Steel, Unitek Hi-7, Ormco Stainless Steel, Unitek Standard in 0.016x0.022, and Jinsung showed the greatest fracture resistance, followed by Unitek Resilient, Unitek Standard, Ormco Stainless Steel, Unitek Hi-T. 6. In surface topography, every products showed indentation and pitting. Jinsung stainless steel wire showed long thin indentation and relatively smooth surface. Unitek wires showed indentation and pitting and Ormco wire showed a lot of irregular pittings.

The fracture resistance of heat pressed ceramics with wire reinforcement (금속선 강화에 따른 열 가압 도재의 파절저항)

  • Statement of problem: Ceramics have been important materials for the restoration of teeth. The demands of patients for tooth-colored restorations and the availability of various dental ceramics has driven the increased use of new types of dental ceramic materials. Improved physical properties of theses materials have expanded its use even in posterior crowns and fixed partial dentures. However, ceramic still has limitation such as low loading capability. This is critical for long-span bridge, because bridge is more subject to tensile force. Purpose: The wire reinforced ceramic was designed to increase the fracture resistance of ceramic restoration. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the fracture resistance of wire reinforced ceramic. Material and methods: Heat pressed ceramic(ingot No.200 : IPS Empress 2, Ivoclar Vivadent, Liechtenstein) and Ni-Cr wire(Alfa Aesar, Johnson Matthey Company, USA) of 0.41 mm diameter were used in this study. Five groups of twelve uniform sized ceramic specimens(width 4 mm, thickness 2 mm, length 15 mm) were fabricated. Each group had different wire arrangement. Wireless ceramic was used as control group. The experimental groups were divided according to wire number and position. One, two and three strands of wires were positioned on the longitudinal axis of specimen. In another experimental group, three strands of wires positioned on the longitudinal axis and five strands of wires positioned on the transverse axis. Three-point bending test was done with universal testing machine(Z020, Zwick, Germany) to compare the flexural modulus, flexural strength, strain at fracture and fracture toughness of each group. Fractured ceramic specimens were cross-sectioned with caborundum disc and grinded with sandpaper to observe interface between ceramic and Ni-Cr wire. The interface between ceramic and Ni-Cr wire was analyzed with scanning electron microscope(JSM-6360, JEOL, Japan) under platinum coating. Results: The results obtained were as follows: 1. The average and standard deviation in flexural modulus, flexural strength and fracture toughness showed no statistical differences between control and experimental groups. However, strain was significantly increased in wire inserted ceramics(P<.001). 2. Control group showed wedge fracture aspects across specimen, while experimental groups showed cracks across specimen. 3. Scanning electron microscopic image of cross-sectioned and longitudinally-sectioned specimens showed no gap at the interface between ceramic and Ni-Cr wire. Conclusion: The results of this study showed that wire inserted ceramics have a high strain characteristic. However, wire inserted ceramics was not enough to use at posterior area of mouth in relation to flexural modulus and flexural strength. Therefore, we need further studies.

Physicochemical Properties of Several Sweet Potato Starches (품종별 고구마 전분의 이화학적 특성)

  • The physicochemical properties and characteristics of sweet potato starches which were isolated from the six varieties were investigated. The shapes of starch granules which observed through photomicroscope and scanning electron microscope lucre round and polygonal, but those of the Shinmi were most polygonal, and the average diameters were in the range of $10.4{\sim}14.2$ microns. The amylose contents were between 25% and 28%, and blue values and alkali numbers were in the range of $0.29{\sim}0.36$, $7.0{\sim}12$, respectively. The swelling power and solubility patterns of the starches were negligible until $50^{\circ}C$, thereafter it increased rapidly and the Eunmi showed highest water binding capacity of 211.6%. Amylogram pattern of 6% starch solutions were similar to no peak viscosity, but maximum viscosity varied widely with varieties. A significant positive correlation was observed between amylose content and average gelatinization temperature. Taste and texture of the steam cooked sweet potatoes were negatively and positively correlated with moisture and amylose contents, respectively, while those of the microwave cooked sweet potatoes were only positively correlated with amylose contents.

Effects of Addition of Eggshell to Sawdust Substrate on the Growth and Development of Winter Mushroom, Flammulina velutipes (계란껍질 첨가배지(添加培地)가 팽이버섯의 균사생장(菌絲生長)과 자실체(子實體)에 미치는 영향(影響))

  • Tile effects of addition of eggshell to sawdust substrate for the growth of F. velutipes were investigated. Eggshell used in this study contained 20.7% C, 0.81% N, 2530 ppm $P_2O_5$ and 44.37% Ca. The addition of eggshell resulted in the increase in bulk density and decrease of moisture content of the substrate. The addition of eggshell significantly increased the yield of the mushroom fruitbody. The addition rate of 15% (v/v), by 25% and at the rates of 5% and 10%, about 20%. Although the addition of eggshell to substrate did not improve the quality of mushroom, it increased the number of effective stipes as compared to control plot; approximately 13% more than in the control plot.

  • The fertilizer experiment was conducted to establish a pattern of a continuous application of organic matter in rice-barley cropping system. Fine textured gray lowland soil was used to grow the crops. The amount of nitrogen absorption and the yield of the crops were the highest in barnyard manure 1,000kg/10a. A correlation among the content of humus and nitrogen, the amount of nitrogen absorption, and the yield was significant while it was not significant among the the nitrogen content of the soil fertility, the total nitrogen, and the yield of crops. The result of this research suggests that revelation of available nitrogen after the decomposition of the organic matter depending on climate and regions should be studied for the organic matter application in due season.

  • Hamangun Dohangri $6^{th}$ tumulus was characterized by using geological, geophysical, and geotechnical surveys in terms of the shape of the tombs, origin and geotechnical properties of tomb materials, safety of grave mound and burial chamber. The bedrock (Haman Formation sedimentary rock) forming the ground of the tomb, is weathered such that men can excavate the ground. The mound tomb is classified into soil part and rock part by low resistivity and high resistivity, respectively, through electrical resistivity survey. The burial chamber is mostly made by Haman Formation while some part is composed of granitic rock that is distributed in the most southern district of the study area. According to soil tests, the soil part of mound tomb shows low water content, low pore ratio, and proper unit weight that indicate highly compacted material. Additionally, the mound tomb is safe because the strength of the rock part of the mound tomb exceeds that of general rock.

Basic Research to Develop PGM-free DeNOx Catalyst for LNT (LNT용 PGM-free DeNOx 촉매 개발을 위한 기초연구)

  • This inquiry was conducted to develop DeNOx catalyst for LNT. In order to develop appropriate catalysts, four catalysts, which do not use PGM (Platinum Group Metal), were carefully selected : Al/Co/Mn, Al/Co/Ni/Mn, Al/Co/Mn/Ca, Al/Co/Ni mixed metal oxides during preliminary experiments. Also, XRD, EDS, SEM, BET and TPD tests were carried as well to evaluate both physicochemical properties of such four catalysts. As a result of the experiment, four catalysts were composed of spinel-shaped crystals and had more than enough pore volume and size to have oxidation-reduction reaction of NOx gases. Additionally, through TPD test, all four types of catalysts were proved to possibly have an oxidation-reduction acid site and NO oxidation activities similar to commercial catalysts. Based on the results above, if we have further change in the composition components and active ingredients according to the catalysts that were chosen in this investigation, then we are more welcomed to expect to have an enhanced DeNox catalyst for LNT.

Evaluation of Physical Properties of Korean Pine (Pinus koraiensis Siebold & Zucc.) Lumber Heat-Treated by Superheated Steam (과열증기 열처리 잣나무재의 물성 평가)

  • In this study, the method for heat treating wood using superheated steam (SHS) was designed and applied. The physical and mechanical properties of Korean Pine (Pinus koraiensis Siebold & Zucc.) lumber heat-treated by SHS at $170^{\circ}C$ and 0.4 MPa for 10 hours were compared with those of non-treated and normal heat-treated wood. The amount of adsorbed water and equilibrium moisture content of the SHS treated wood were lower than non-treated wood. On the other hand the compressive strength parallel to grain and the bending strength of SHS treated wood were higher than those of non-treated wood. The hygroscopicity of SHS treated wood was similar to normal heat treated wood at $220^{\circ}C$. Internal checks that often occur during normal heat treatment were not developed at SHS treatment. Also, SHS treatment are effective in control of internal checks occurrence and resin exudation.

Effect of Cold Storage on the Palatability of Thawed Holstein Tenderloin (냉장에 의한 해동 홀스타인 안심육의 기호성 향상)

  • This study was carried out to investigate the change of palatability improvement of cooked meat by the physico-chemical properties and sensory characteristics as aging at $3^{\circ}C$ after thawing of frozen Holstein tenderloin. Shear force value(SFV), myofibrillar fragmentation ratio(MFR), appearance of 30ki1o dalton (30KD) component, raw meat aroma, tenderness, palatability of cooked meat, content of free amino acid and ATP related compound were measured. Raw meat aroma (p< 0.01), tenderness(p<0.05), SFV(p<0.05), MFR(p<0.01) and 30KD(p<0.001) of unfrozen beef tenderloin aged at $3^{\circ}C$ were superior than frozen beef tenderloin. As aging at $3^{\circ}C$ after thawing of frozen beef tenderloin SFV(p<0.05) decreased, MFR(P<0.001) and 30KD(p<0.001) increased, and raw meat aroma and tenderness improved(p<0.05). Also, cooked meat aroma, texture and palatability improved(p<0.05), without changing the taste. The content of aspartic acid and leucine of tenderloin aged thawing of frozen beef abounded were more than frozen beef(p<0.05), concentration of IMP(P<0.05) decreased, the hypoxanthine(p<0.05) and inosine increased.

Purification and Characterization of ${\gamma}-Conglycinin$ of Soybean (Glycine max) (대두(大豆)(Glycine max)의 ${\gamma}-Conglycinin$의 정제(精製)와 특성(特性)에 관(關)하여)

  • The physical and chemical properties of ${\gamma}-conglycinin$ of soybean (Glycine max) were investigated. The soybean protein extracted from soybean meal using 0.2M NaCl solution at pH 4.5 was passed through a Sephadex G-150 column to isolate 7S globulin. ${\gamma}$-Conglycinin was isolated and purified from the 7S globulin with a DEAE Sephadex A-50 column chromatography. The protein preparation was pure on immunoelectrophoresis, polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis and gel isoelectric fouling. It had an isoelectric point at pH 5.4 and contained 16.12% nitrogen, 4.18% mannose and 1.21% glucosamine. Amino acid composition, in general, shaved that ${\gamma}-conglycinin$ contained higher contents of lysine, dicarboxylic acids and ammonia nitrogen, and lower contents of sulfur-containing amino acids and tryptophan. The subunits of ${\gamma}-conglycinin$ were distributed in the range of pH 4.6-5.5. The subunits located in the pH region of 4.6-5.0 and 5.0-5.5 were glycopeptides (molecular weight of 38,000) and simple peptide (MW of 32,000), respectively.
