Characteristics of Bio-impedance for Implantable Electrode Design in Human Skin (인간 피부에 삽입형 전극설계를 위한 생체임피던스 특성)

  • Electrode contact resistance is a crucial factor in physiological measurements and can be an accuracy limiting factor to perform electrical impedance measurements. The electrical bio-impedance values can be calculated by the conductivity and permittivity of underlying tissue using implant electrode in human skin. In this study we focus on detecting physiological changes in the human skin layers such as the sebum layer, stratum corneum layer, epidermis layer, dermis layer, subcutaneous fat and muscle. The aim of this paper is to obtain optimal design for implantable electrode at subcutaneous fat layer through the simulation by finite element methods(FEM). This is achieved by evaluating FEM simulations geometrically for different electrodes in length(50 mm, 70 mm), in shape(rectangle, round square, sexangle column), in material(gold) and in depth(22.325 mm) based on the information coming from the subcutaneous fat layer. In bio-impedance measurement experiments, according to electrode shapes and applied voltage, we have ascertained that there was the highest difference of bio-impedance in subcutaneous fat layer. The methodology of simulation can be extended to account for different electrode designs as well as more physical phenomena that are relevant to electrical impedance measurements of skin and their interpretation.

A Study on Effectiveness of Safety Barriers Restraining Illegal Pedestrian Crossing on Exclusive Median Bus Corridor - Case Study at Sookmyung Women's University Bus Station - (중앙버스전용차로 분리형 횡단보도 무단횡단 억제시설 효과평가 - 숙명여대 입구 중앙버스정류소 횡단보도부를 중심으로 -)

  • It has reported that a median bus-stop island on an exclusive median bus lane (EMBL) has shortened a crossing distance unit, encouraged a pedestrian's illegal crossing, and increased the number of accidents in the area. This study presents (1) the analysis of inappropriate pedestrian crossing patterns collected on exclusive median bus corridors and (2) the estimated performance of safety barriers restraining the occurrence of those. Total 19,649 pedestrian crossing data collected at the 'Sookmyung-university' median bus-stop, and the inappropriate pedestrian crossing patterns among those were grouped in terms of time and space violations. Physical safety barriers restraining illegal pedestrian crossings were considered as an alternative, and its performance in safety was quantified through microscopic simulation with conflict analyses by using surrogate safety assessment model. The findings suggest the number of conflicts reduced be 24.9 percentages compared to the one of the present condition when the physical safety barriers are placed at each of the eight ends of the EMBL pedestrian crossing.

  • Wireless RSSI (Received Signal Strength Indication) fingerprinting is one of the most popular methods for indoor positioning as it provides reasonable accuracy while being able to exploit existing wireless infrastructure. However, the process of radio map construction (aka fingerprint calibration) is laborious and time consuming as precise physical coordinates and wireless signals have to be measured at multiple locations of target environment. This paper proposes a method to build the map from a combination of RSSIs without location information collected in a crowdsourcing fashion, and a handful of labeled RSSIs using a semi-supervised self organizing map learning algorithm. Experiment on simulated data shows promising results as the method is able to recover the full map effectively with only 1% RSSI samples from the fingerprint database.

  • 차량 기술의 발전으로 커넥티드 및 자율주행 차량 환경과 같은 차량 기술의 발전은 운전자에게 편의와 안전을 위한 기능을 제공한다. 하지만 이러한 장점들에도 불구하고 사이버 공격의 다양한 취약점 노출되어 있다. 최근까지 자동차 내부 네트워크로써 가장 널리 사용되는 통신기술인 CAN(Controller Area Networks) 통신은 대부분 차량의 동력을 담당하는 역할을 하다보니, 보안 문제의 중심에 서게 될 수 있다. 다양한 이기종 네트워크에서 구성된 가상화 기반의 사이버 훈련 프레임워크에 대해 설명하고자 한다. 이러한 사례 연구는 차량에 대해 물리적인 실험 환경에서의 모의침투와 같은 테스트가 어렵고, 보안과 안전이 함께 고려되어야 하는 특수성을 가진 차량 내부 네트워크의 사이버 훈련 프레임워크 설계에 도움을 줄 것이다. 본 논문에서는 가상화 개발환경 구축 사례 조사, 가상화 개발환경 구현과 차량의 공격 시나리오 및 탐지 프레임워크의 동향을 설명한다.

Iterative Approximation of Carrier Sensing Radius in CSMA-based Wireless Ad Hoc Networks (CSMA 기반 무선 애드 혹 네트워크에서 반송파 감지 반경의 반복적 근사 기법)

  • Recently, as CSMA technique has been increasingly adopted in various wireless networks, extensive researches to analyze the statistical characteristics of CSMA-based wireless networks have been done. Despite the ongoing efforts, there still remain many difficulties in the analysis because of unexpectable operational behavior of CSMA. Previous literature studying CSMA networks used the concept of the carrier sensing radius to reflect the carrier sensing function. However, since the carrier sensing radius based on the protocol model is not affected by the aggregate interference from other nodes, the derived statistical models cannot avoid approximation errors especially if the network is under high interference. In this paper, we propose an algorithm to derive the carrier sensing radius considering the physical model, where the carrier sensing radius reflecting the aggregate interference is found. For the purpose of this, we analyze the aggregate interference model and the behavior of CSMA function. Based on the analysis, we propose an iterative approximation algorithm for the physical carrier sensing radius. Extensive simulations and results show that the proposed algorithm can contribute to considerably reduce the statistical modeling error of a CSMA network under various channel conditions.

Model Optimization for Sea Surface Wind Simulation of Strong Wind Cases (강풍 사례의 해상풍 모의를 위한 모형의 최적화)

  • This study is concerned with the optimization of models using MM5 and WRF mesoscale numerical models to simulate strong sea surface winds, such as that of typhoon Shanshan on 17 September 2006, and the Siberian high event on 16 December 2006, which were selected for displaying the two highest mean wind speeds. The model optimizations for the lowest level altitude, physical parameters and horizontal resolution were all examined. The sea surface wind values obtained using a logarithmic function which takes into account low-level stability and surface roughness were more accurate than those obtained by adjusting the lowest-level of the model to 10 m linearly. To find the optimal parameters for simulating strong sea surface winds various physical parameters were combined and applied to the model. Model grid resolutions of 3-km produced better results than those of 9-km in terms of displaying accurately regions of strong wind, low pressure intensities and low pressure mesoscale structures.

  • 해안 대수층은 해수와 담수가 공존하는 지역으로 상대적으로 밀도가 큰 해수가 대수층의 담수 아래에 쐐기형태로 존재하게 된다. 이러한 쐐기형태의 해수와 담수의 경계면은 압력경도의 평형에 의해 경계면이 유지되며, 해수면 또는 지하수위가 변동할 경우 해수-담수 경계면의 균형이 무너짐과 더불어 압력경도의 평행이 이루어질 때 까지 해수-담수 경계면의 이동이 계속 진행된다. 수위 변화의 주요 원인으로는 지구온난화 및 기후변화로 인한 지속적인 해수면 상승과 도서지역의 인구증가 및 산업화로 인한 무분별한 지하수의 사용 등에 의한 지하수위 저하 등을 꼽을 수 있다. 이와 같은 원인으로 해안 및 도서지역에서는 해안 대수층의 해수침투거리가 증가하여 지하수 이용에 큰 어려움을 겪고 있다. 이에 해안 대수층의 해수침투 범위 및 거리를 추정하기 위한 많은 연구들이 다양한 분야에서 지속해서 이루어지고 있지만, 서로 밀도가 다른 해수와 담수가 공존하는 해안 대수층 내의 수리특성을 명확히 파악하기에는 아직까지 미흡한 점들이 많다. 과거에는 Darcy의 법칙 및 Ghyben-Herzberg 식에 근거한 이론적인 연구들이 주로 이루어졌고, 근래에 현장관측이나 수리모형실험이 국내 외적으로 수행되고 있으나, 모든 영역의 지하수의 특성을 조사하는 것이 사실상 불가능하다. 이에 최근에는 컴퓨터 성능의 비약적인 발전과 더불어 다양한 수치해석방법에 의한 수치모델들이 개발되어 시뮬레이션에 적용되고 있다. 하지만 거의 대부분의 수치모델은 해안 대수층 수리특성을 투수계수에 의존하고 있을 뿐, 대수층 내부의 해수-담수에 의한 밀도류의 유동특성을 전혀 고려하지 못한 채 정수압에 근거한 해수-담수 경계면에 대해 모의하고 있는 정도이다. 따라서 본 연구에서는 해안 대수층 내부의 유동현상을 투수계수에 의존하는 방법에서 탈피하여 대수층 매체의 입경, 공극, 형상 등을 고려할 수 있을 뿐만 아니라, 염분 및 온도차에 의한 밀도류를 해석할 수 있는 강비선형 수치모델을 개발하여 해수침투 현상을 직접 모의한다. 나아가 대부분의 이전 연구들에서 간과하고 있는 해안지역의 대표적 물리력인 파랑과 조석의 영향이 해안 대수층의 해수침투에 미치는 영향, 해안 대수층의 지하수위 및 해수면의 수위차에 의한 해수침투 특성 그리고 이를 제어 할 수 있는 새로운 대응기술을 제안하는 것을 목적으로 한다.

Interactive Education of Introductory Engineering via Multimedia (멀티미디어를 이용한 인터액티브 공학개론 교육)

  • We introduce an introductory engineering education course for engineering majors and non-engineering majors. This course does not require any previous knowledge and experience on engineering. It requires strong curiosities and imaginations on current and future society we live in, where technology is inseparable ingredient. Course encourages attendees to explore fundamental issues of engineering: what is proper technology and what are proper ways of exercising engineering, issues dealt in soft engineering. Since course topics cover many aspects of technology, traditional learning methods fail to be successful and efficient. Various efficient learning methods have been proposed and implemented. We utilize various interactive tangible media, which include simulated thought experiments and physical media experiences. About twenty (20) episodes in short film format are produced based on scenario written according to related issues selected. Physical media like interactive robots are introduced for attendees' stimulated experiences. We summarize our exciting experiments on interactive teaching experiences at Pusan National University which include on/off-line interactions, assignments, projects, and evaluations.

Implementation of Parallel Processor for Sound Synthesis of Guitar (기타의 음 합성을 위한 병렬 프로세서 구현)

  • Physical modeling is a synthesis method of high quality sound which is similar to real sound for musical instruments. However, since physical modeling requires a lot of parameters to synthesize sound of a musical instrument, it prevents real-time processing for the musical instrument which supports a large number of sounds simultaneously. To solve this problem, this paper proposes a single instruction multiple data (SIMD) parallel processor that supports real-time processing of sound synthesis of guitar, a representative plucked string musical instrument. To control six strings of guitar, we used a SIMD parallel processor which consists of six processing elements (PEs). Each PE supports modeling of the corresponding string. The proposed SIMD processor can generate synthesized sounds of six strings simultaneously when a parallel synthesis algorithm receives excitation signals and parameters of each string as an input. Experimental results using a sampling rate 44.1 kHz and 16 bits quantization indicate that synthesis sounds using the proposed parallel processor were very similar to original sound. In addition, the proposed parallel processor outperforms commercial TI's TMS320C6416 in terms of execution time (8.9x better) and energy efficiency (39.8x better).

Performance Analysis of Optical CDMA System with Cross-Layer Concept (계층간 교차 개념을 적용한 광 부호분할 다중접속 시스템의 성능 분석)

  • In this paper, the network performance of a turbo coded optical code division multiple access (CDMA) system with cross-layer, which is between physical and network layers, concept is analyzed and simulated. We consider physical and MAC layers in a cross-layer concept. An intensity-modulated/direct-detection (IM/DD) optical system employing pulse position modulation (PPM) is considered. In order to increase the system performance, turbo codes composed of parallel concatenated convolutional codes (PCCCs) is utilized. The network performance is evaluated in terms of bit error probability (BEP). From the simulation results, it is demonstrated that turbo coding offers considerable coding gain with reasonable encoding and decoding complexity. Also, it is confirmed that the performance of such an optical CDMA network can be substantially improved by increasing e interleaver length and e number of iterations in e decoding process. The results of this paper can be applied to implement the indoor optical wireless LANs.
