  • Recently, digitizing technologies for conservation and restoration of tangible intangible cultural properties are coming into spotlight. Because cultural properties are easy to be lost and damaged over the years, After construction of cultural assets database we can reconstruct the cultural asset making use of the reverse engineering when needed, and implement digital contents such as computer graphics, 3D virtural realization, hologram, etc. So in this paper, we scrutinize visual and technical factors occurring in different types of digital restoration of cultural properties, and present problems and improvements, and try to research technological prowess and visual mechanism.

  • The severe damage of cultural heritages induced by natural hazards like heavy rain has been dramatically increased since 1990. The number of the repair works of stone heritage of 2005 was six times as many as those of 1986 year. Especially the ratio of the repair works of Gyeongsang Province and Jeolla Province stood 63% of those of all over the country. Since 1990, the typhoons usually struck the southern part of Korea and went northward. The heavy damage of stone heritages in two provinces was caused by them. We made a preliminary survey the stone heritages that exposed to the natural hazards on the basis of repair works of them and a field survey. The analysis results indicate that the natural hazards such as landslide and soil disaster of the stone heritages related to a sloping surface stood 58% of all kind of natural hazards. The reasons are caused by the 59 % of all the stone heritages distributed in a sloping surface resulted in natural hazards like landslide and soil disaster. The bases of stone heritages can be easily eroded by the surface water with high energy induced by heavy rainfall. Most of the stone heritages like Maebul were engraved on a natural rock wall(outcrop). But some of them engraved on rolling stones are very vulnerable in a change of a base condition caused by erosion and ground subsidence and they can be tilted or fell down. The distribution of the stone heritages vulnerable in natural hazard is related to that of the rainfall distribution compounded five typhoons after 1990. Most of them are included in level two on the rainfall distribution map except those of Taean peninsula and some of Gyeonggi Province. They seem to be rather related to the rainfall distribution of the Typhoon Olga.

  • It is hard to predict the mechanical characteristics of discontinuous stone masonry structures by the static analysis method, because of irregularity of face stones and also due to randomness of backfill materials. Inversely, one can estimate the mechanical characteristics by comparing the natural frequencies between measured and computed. The aim of this paper is to investigate the computational modeling method of ancient stone arch bridges in Korea and to find the factors influencing their dynamic characteristics. The results revealed that the rigidity of spandrel walls and backfill materials are the most important factors influencing the natural frequencies of stone arch bridges.

  • This study was performed to characterize historical paper artefacts from 16th to 19th century from Chungbuk National University Museum (CNUM) in Korea. In order to know the fiber composition, surface features and fiber orientation in historic paper artefacts, LM, SEM and EDX analysis observations were applied. Based on tested results, it was concluded that Korean historic papers from 16 to 19th century were made of paper mulberry fibers called dak, which had 2.79-16.03 m of fiber lengthes and $4.5-26{\mu}m$ of lumen widthes, and they were relatively well preserved. According to EDX analysis, the examined papers differed to the contents of inorganics. High contents of S, Si, Ca, P and Al refer to use fillers, such as gypsum, clay and talc, for paper artifacts. In particular, half of samples contained some amounts of S, Cl and Fe. Since those inorganics might be potentially harmful for the paper permanency, therefore it should be considered special restoration measures from the preservation point of view.

  • This study aims to identify the relationship between termite-damaged cultural heritage sites and the 'Forest Tending Project' based on a comprehensive survey of the status of damage caused by termites and of the Forest Tending Project. It was observed that the Forest Tending Project started in 2004 as a five-year policy project covering over 59% of the nation's forests, which showed the maximum value in 2009 and then gradually decreased. Since then, increased damage to national cultural heritage sites by termites has been confirmed and counter measures have been expanded since 2012. Also, as a result of the National Research Institute of Cultural Heritage surveying the status of termite damage in national cultural heritage sites over these six years, it was identified that about 98% of investigated cultural heritage sites were damaged by termites, about 78% of them were adjacent to forests, and that all 46 national cultural heritage sites which had been included in the 2008 Forest Fire Prevention Cultural Heritage Afforestation Project were damaged by termites. Therefore, it is claimed that the number of termite-damaged cultural heritage sites has increased after an extensive Forest Tending Project was applied on a national scale, and it seems that all cultural heritage areas close to forests are particularly subject to termite-damage due to the number of tree stumps and lumber byproducts which can serve as habitats for the pests.
