  • Oegosan Onggi Village can be characterized by having industrial significance and cultural significance of Onggi. However Onggijang(Onggi maker) worked in poor conditions because the village was in the limited development district. Throughout the new millenium phenomenon of Well-being, the awareness of cultural values has been increased while local government designated Onggi as Local Intangible Cultural Heritage(ICH). In this condition, Ulsan metro city and Ulju county paid attention to Onggi Village as tourist attractions. First, they worked improving condition of village through Cultural Tourist Attraction Plan. Second, they extended their participation in Onggi Festival so the festival growed. Third, they designated Onggijang in Village as Local ICH. These activities were the effort in order to revitalize the village, however the cultural tourist attraction plan was solely centralized into tourist attractions. Thus, the work condition of Onggijang was not considered sufficiently so the work condition had become more inconvenient than the previous situation. In the case of Onggi festival, the outward development has been accomplished in accordance with the growth of festival scale and visitors, while the identity of festival had been weaken so the Onggijang barely attended the Onggi festival. The designation of ICH was also the unilateral decision, Onggijang had been in the conflict relationship between Onggijang concerning the craftsmanship and maintenance of the ICH. Local Government had power on their Intangible Cultural Heritage(ICH). Therefore we need to seek for role and functions as community on ICH.

Yangyeongsi in Daegu, South Korea is Doing developed as a core location in order to revitalize regional culture. The unique tradition and functions of this city area have been preserved. Previous research "The Fundamental Research of Revitalization for Yangyeongsi in Daegu for the Local Promotion" undertaken by the author revealed a lack of fundamental research available to establish an understanding of how to revitalize Yangyeongsi. The research methodology designed this by, (1)a site investigation and verification of previous research (2)a deep analysis of Yangyeongsi to uncover potential improvement opportunities (3) assessment of essential elements and appropriate directions for revitalization of the traditional market (4) application of the environment design improvement process to the local design center. The design proposal is that, firstly, space assessment will De improved by the maintenance and expansion of fundamental facilities. Secondly, space application can be maximized by servicing the complex road network through a traffic flow plan. In addition, consideration for the local characteristics will promote unity and identification with the region. Lastly, revitalization and industrialization development of sightseeing resources and secure streets and event spaces will promote enjoyable experiences for visitors. Research results were submitted to the local authority and applied to the future policy plan. Continuous research on revitalization and analysis of the local characteristics are recommended in order to benefit local promotion.

  • This Study is about the "Comprehensive Landscape Improvement Plan for Gu-ryoung Seaside Village that was one of most exhibited projects for developing sea villages." The formulations of the plan were supervised by the Ministry of Land, Transport, and Maritime Affairs and were executed by the Goheung Country. Rather than proposing renovations for the landscape, this study maintains the existing order and attempts to examine the plan by scrutinizing the vernacular design language of the landscape. In the study, community members had the opportunity to express their opinions and ideas about the community through workshops composed of community participation programs, and participated in the decision-making process through consultation meetings. The conclusion of this study was relevant to the activities of the committee on landscape improvement. The Comprehensive Landscape Improvement Plan has three objectives: (1) resorting and modifying the natural landscape, (2) restructuring the roadways, and (3) modifying key spaces. In the end, the role of Gu-ryong Mountain as a background of the landscape was focused on tree planting drives that were undertaken, and accessibility to the sea front was improved. Second, in restructuring the roadways, rough roads were restored and unconnected roads were connected to ensure a network of roads along the sea front, inner roads in the village, roads at the Fringes Mountains, and stone roads on the mud flat. In addition, roads were named according to the character of the landscape and signs were installed. Finally, the existing key spaces, in which community members came together, were restored and new key spaces were created for the outdoor activities of the inhabitants and the diverse experience of visitors. A guideline was also created to regulate private areas such as roofs, walls, fences of residential buildings, and private container boxes and fishing gear along the sea front. The strength of this study is that it is seeking to determine the greatest potential of the landscape and set the plan by examining the lives of community members. Some problems were found during the development of this study. Further, there were problems in the community's understanding as elaborated below. First is the gap between community members' awareness and practice. Even though they were aware of the problems with the village landscape, they hesitated to implement improvements. Second, community members have misunderstandings about the landscape the improvement plan. The local government and the residents have understood this plan as a development project; for example, new building construction or the extension of roads. Third, residents are not aware that continuous attention and improvements are required for the upkeep of the landscape in the sea village. The plan to improve the landscape should promote a balance between making the area as a tourist attraction and maintaining the lives and cultural activities, because the sea village system incorporates settlements, economy, and culture.

  • Despite the fact that the importance of islands and oceans is increasingly being emphasized as they are recognized as alternative spaces for the future, some islands that have not been designated as cultural assets have lost their natural and cultural landscapes to development projects and other plans for turning islands into tourist resources, and are still in the process of being destroyed. Unlike old perceptions of islands, islands, in the minds of people living in the modern age, have become places for taking a quiet rest or enjoying and appreciating the undamaged beauty of nature itself. Keeping up with the trend of people increasingly visiting the islands these days, it is high time to prepare plans for the promotion, preservation management, and usages of islands based on researches of islands with excellent natural landscapes and through the designation of these islands as cultural properties. As the first step of studying island landscape resources as resources of cultural assets, the current study includes literature reviews and field investigations of Gwanmaedo and Yeongsando, two islands that have been selected as prestigious villages and are part of the Dadohaehaesang National Park. Based on these preliminary investigations, landscape resources showing distinctive natural landscapes and cultural sceneries were selected and analyzed in detail, thus presented for their value as resources of Scenic site and future research.
