Analyzing the status of theoretical framework by subfields in library and information science research articles (문헌정보학 연구논문의 이론체계 현황분석 연구)

  • Based upon the assumption that both theory building and theory use are intertwined to construct a cohesive body of knowledge in the filed, this study attempts to identify the state of theoretical framework by examining the number and the quality of theoretical articles by subfield. Theoretical article is characterized as an incident in which in which the author contributes to the development or the use of theory in his/her own paper. Theoretical incidents were identified by a content analysis of 1,661 articles in four LIS journals from 1984 to 2003. The findings suggest that the four subfields, such as information seeking/use, information retrieval, library management, and scholar communication had great contributions to both theory building and theory use. Also, two research areas such as bibliometrics and professionals are very likely to be theoretical. Further, the analysis of the name of theories used by subfields could give an insight into the understanding of how the theoretical frameworks of each subfield are related.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the identity and relationship of library and information science by exploring theoretical aspects of LIS research, including theory building and theory use. The sample of this study consists of 1,661 research articles published from 1984 to 2003 in two Korean and two American core LIS journals. Theory articles are analyzed with two scales, such as '4-degree of theory efficiency' and '5-degree of theory use' Each article is coded in terms of journal, country, publication year, subfield, and methodology of the article. and affiliation, department, and research experience of the first author. The theories used therein are coded according to their origin and age. Also, an author co-citation technique is applied to represent intellectual structure on a two-dimensional map, which has been constructed by theory use of LIS authors fur 20 years.

  • The purpose of this study is to examine research trends on theory use in Korean LIS, and ultimately to identify its academic growth and change. This study conducted content analysis, with a sample of 344 articles in Journal of the Korean Society for Library and Information Science during the past five years from 2010 to 2014. Then longitudinal analysis was additionally carried out by comparing with a data set from 1984 to 2003. Findings are as follows. 13.7% of research articles used theories on average 2.02 times. The most theories were deployed at the level of Spot Citing and the next most theories were at the level of Theory Application. Research on the subject of education and information use/seeking used theories most frequently. Theories from LIS were 31.9% and those from social science were 58.3% of all. Also, longitudinal analysis results support the conclusion that there was no quantitative increase but was clear qualitative growth in theoretical research of LIS. And the current theoretical framework of LIS research has closer relationships with pedagogy and psychology among social science disciplines than in the past.

  • The purpose of this study is to introduce the Theory of Information Worlds which analyzes information behaviors in the social perspective. This study analyzed dissertations using the theory to provide the understanding of the theory and suggest theoretical implications. The theory was developed by Burnett and Jeager in 2008, and since then it was applied in 14 dissertations. Key concepts of the theory include social norms, social types, information value, information behavior, and boundaries. These concepts are intervened in the process of creation and control of behavior through interaction each other. Qualitative research was adopted in more research rather than quantitative research; especially interview and content analysis were applied. It is expected that the spectrum of information behavior research in Korea is broaden and deeper through this study.

  • The various concepts of knowledge such as Knowledge Management(KM). Intellectual assets and digital knowledge asset management are currently important issues among many organizations. To the country like Korea that has professed Itself for a great power of knowledge Information and adopted KM and Record and Information Management (RIM) as the country's main polity, the study on the theoretical basis and best practices of KM and RIM from the perspective of Library & Information science is very urgent. However, many studies on knowledge including KM were mainly done at the business administrative field. and the consolidated study basis on knowledge even in the Library & Information Sciences was quite in deficiency, furthermore any discussion on knowledge, correlation among related systems and the possibilities of cooperation as the development of Information communication has not been done. Therefore, this study is to present the alternative plan of the consolidated management on knowledge through comparative analysis on the definition, main function and trend of KM & RIM. Especially, this study would be the theoretical basis to the public organizations that plan to introduce KM & RIM.

  • The aim of this study is to reveal the categorizational and classificatory features of the subject-based classification (SBC) as a subject organization system. For this purpose, 12 SBC schemes of public libraries were selected and a comparative analysis was made between the traditional classification system, such as DDC and SBC in terms of the categorizational aspects, and canons for the classification. As a result, there were significant and considerable differences between the two types of classifications. This study concluded that SBC cannot be clearly explained and understood without a consideration of its essential and distinctive characteristics as a classification scheme.

Reference Services and Information Services in Korea's LIS Field (한국 문헌정보학에서 참고봉사와 정보봉사의 의미)

  • This study investigates both arbitrariness and misrepresentation in the terminology of Korea's LIS field with an example of the term 'information services.' The focus is on analyzing the differences in the Term's history and theoretical base between American LIS field and Korea's. Discussed in details are the popularity and usage of the Term in Korea's LIS field and libraries. The ultimate intention of this study is to motivate the Korea's LIS scholars to endeavor for theoretical accomplishments with regard to 'information services,' which can justify the change of term from 'reference services' to 'information services.'

The Discourse for Academic Generation of 'School library Education Science' (문헌정보교육학의 학문적 생성 담론)

  • This study presents the discourse for academic generation of 'School Library Education Science' based on integrative research between library & information science and education science. The study discusses research fields and themes of 'School Library Education Science' as the base to define the roles of the school library and of teacher-librarians. It contributes to upgrading the research level of the school library. The research field in the school library analyzes and integrates both aspects of library & information science and of education science. The developed theories of 'School Library Education Science' present Library-Based Education and Library-Based Learning, Base Connectionism, Base Integrationism, Top456 Approach, Curriculum-Based Approach, Viewpoint Approach, and Education of Information and the Library as a Subject Matter. The trends in research of the school library analyze the thesis numbers of academic journals. The future research challenges of 'School Library Education Science' discuss the educational basics of the school library, operational management, electronic school libraries, and educational activities. Conclusively, this study analyzes the current situation of the school library & of teacher-librarians in Korea, and provides its solution by the aspects of 'School Library Education Science'.

  • 우리는 지식활동의 원천인 연구활동을 파악하기 위한 분류체계를 만들고자 하였다 그러나 지식활동분류와 관련된 이론체계가 정립된 것이 없어서 다양한 시가과 방법론을 검토한 후 이들을 체계화하며 새로운 방법론을 도출하였다. 이 논문은 바로 그 과정에서 이루어진 이론적인 작업을 정리한 것이다. 우리는 지식이라는 거대한 실체보다 새로운 지식을 추가하는 연구활동이 중요하다는 인식에 기반하였다. 또한 연구활동과 연구활동의 목적이 연계되고 학제연구라는 새로운 지적활동의 패턴이 자유자재로 반영되도록 하였다.

Rorty's Neo-Pragmaticism and its Implications on Knowledge Organization System Development (로티의 신실용주의와 정보조직 시스템 설계의 의미)

  • The study acknowledges the importance of philosophical basis such as paradigms and epistemology in knowledge organization system development. The study aims at providing implications of Rorty's neo-pragmatism on knowledge organization system development. The study discussed Rorty's main concepts - Anti-Dualism, Languages, Ethnocentrism, and Solidarity, and further how these elements are utilized in system design. The study focuses on philosophical basis, knowledge organization system development approach, and methodology. It has values in that it provides implications for other philosophical discussions to be applicable to knowledge organization.
