  • This study is to propose the possibility of narrative or story as a research methodology in the field of library and information science. To do this, I discuss the power and possibility of storytelling as a epistemological method of social science. Later, I look into turn to narrative in western scholarly traditions. And then, I introduced the process and the characteristic of the narrative inquiry as a subject and a methodology of research. I compare to another research methodology, ethnography and phenomenological research. At last, I reviewed the literature which is conducted by the methodology of narrative inquiry in the field of library and information science. I consider the possibility of adaptation of narrative inquiry in the field.

  • By document co-citation analysis with Korean Citation Index (KCI) data, this study accurately identified the research fronts and hot topics in Korean library and information science (LIS) from 2004 to 2013. 159 core papers in LIS domain and their citations are scraped manually from Korean Citation Index web site. In the cluster analysis and network analysis, 159 core papers were grouped into 27 clusters with multiple papers and 8 singlton clusters. Among the 27 clusters which have multple papers, 'LIS education' cluster was the largest with 16 core papers, and 'citation analysis & intellectual structure analysis' cluster had the strongest citation impact according to the ehs-index. Closer observation of the citations to the core papers in each research front showed that 67.5% of the citations were made by LIS research papers and 32.5% of the citations were made by non-LIS research papers. Considering the share of citations and the citation impact growth index, 'local documentation', 'citation analysis & intellectual structure analysis', and 'research trends analysis' were identified as the most emerging research front in Korean library and information science. The analytical methods used in this study have great potential in discovering the characteristics of research fronts in Korean interdisciplinary research domains.

  • This study was performed to design a field training curriculum model linked to the National Competence Standards (NCS) in Library and Information Science majors by analyzing factors influencing satisfaction of the field practice program and by drawing NCS capacity units suitable as field training configuration factors. It was also conducted to give shape to the standards and guidelines of NCS-based field training curriculum. For this study, first, we analyzed the implementation status of the National Competence Standards (NCS), particularly in Library and Information Science major. Second, we derived influencing factors of the field practice program through the field training satisfaction survey from Library and Information Science students. Third, we have designed a training curriculum model associated with NCS seeking proper matches with actual work of the library site through research methods including focus group interviews. Fourth, education guidelines of the field training required to interns were proposed in detail.

  • This study seeks to develop a curriculum operating model for Korean Library and Information Science, based on investigations into LIS curricula at home and abroad. Standard courses that can be applied to this model were also proposed. This study comprehensively analyzed the contents of domestic and foreign curricula and surveyed current librarians in all types of library fields. As a result, this study proposed required courses, core courses, and elective courses. Six required LIS courses are: Introduction to Library and Information Science, Information Organization, Information Services, Library and Information Center Management, Information Retrieval, and Field Work. Six core LIS courses are: Classification & Cataloging Practice, Subject Information Resources, Collection Development, Digital Library, Introduction to Bibliography, and Introduction to Archive Management. Twenty selective LIS courses include: the General Library and Information Science area (Cultural History of Information, Information Society and Library, Library and Copyright, Research Methods in Library and Information Science), the Information Organization area (Metadata Fundamentals, KORMARC Practice), the Information Services area (Information Literacy Instruction, Reading Guidance, Information User Study), the Library and Information Center Management area (Library Management, including management for different kinds of libraries, Library Information Cooperator, Library Marketing, Non-book Material and Multimedia Management (Contents Management), the Information Science area (Database Management, including Web DB Management, Indexing and Abstracting, Introduction to Information Science, Understanding Information Science, Automated System of Library, Library Information Network), and the Archival Science area (Preservation Management).

  • For the past 50 years, Korean library researchers have zealously absorbed foreign thoughts and techniques without filtering them discreetly. Both research themes and methods have been freely borrowed and put into practice. This practice has been taken for granted for LIS researchers in Korea. But, lack of understanding of our own library field, has produced problems for researchers. This is because libraries of each country have its own developmental stage and cultural heritage. Therefore, I would say that researchers should be cautious in the application of foreign theories. In Korea, this kinds of filtering process has been neglected in the past. LIS research must have close relations with practical library work. LIS theories and practices in Korea should be hopefully based on the needs of the Korean society. In short, Korea should have a LIS, which serve the needs and ideals of the library and society of Korea.

  • Different from the existing tendency to mainly concentrate on the study of research activities of the library and information science, this paper places the focus on grasping research patterns presented in the journal papers which reflect library Practices. Actually, this paper analyzes research areas, the degree of relative dependence by subjects, and leading journals found in the papers which have been reported in the three main library journals such as "Tosogwan", "National Assembly Library Review", and "KLA Bulletin : Tosogwanmunwha" from 1996 to 2000. As a result, the study says that major research areas in library practices show the high degree of dependence on the library and information science, while the degree of dependence on the information science is low.he information science is low.

  • This study attempted to explore the characteristics of knowledge communication and investigate important research topics and key authors by analyzing major academic papers in the field of LIS in Korea for five years from 2018 to 2022. The research method collected and analyzed papers published for five years in four key journals in the field of domestic Library and Information Science from the Korean Citation Index (KCI) database. The paper was selected to extract the author data of the paper and the data of the reference, and network visualization was performed by conducting literature co-citation analysis and author co-citation analysis using Netminer. As a result of the analysis, it was possible to derive a pair of co-citations between authors, and it was confirmed that it is important to include multiple authors in the intellectual structure analysis in the academic field through co-citation frequency analysis among researchers. The literature confirmed the correlation between the topics of the paper, and it was found that research related to Library and Information Science was centered on the topics of library, digital, user, service, and data.
