  • This study assesses research patterns and trends of library and information science(LIS) in Korea by applying bibliometric analysis. For the study, 2,400 peer-reviewed publications from 2001 to 2010(including conference proceedings) published by 159 LIS professors in Korea were analyzed by year, author, affiliation and journal. The study findings showed an increasing trend in collaboration(52.75% of total publications with single authors and 47.25% with multiple authors) among LIS professors in Korea, robust publication patterns of Korean LIS faculty(average 1.51 publications per year), and an increasing number in foreign publications(170 publications). The study results also suggested an internationalization of LIS in Korea. Specifically, the study found a higher rate of Korean LIS faculty with foreign degrees than in previous years as well as a higher publication rate of professors with international degrees. The analysis of publication patterns conducted by the study, which is a first step in our aim to establish a multi-faceted approach for assessing the impact of scholarly work, will be followed up with analysis of references and citations to evaluate the quality of publications.

  • I had a chance to learn about grants made by British Library Research and Development Department in London and the Council on Library Resources in Washington in my studies designed to produce an institutional vision of supporting research and development in the field of library and information science in Japan. In this article, I have tried to elucidate contributions of the two agencies to the librarianship and research communities, reviewing their histories, management process and some features of research areas which meet their standards of providing grants.

  • 본 논문에서는 SGML(Standard Generalized Markup Language)을 사용하여 텍스트 검색시스템을 구축하였다.

  • This study applied dynamic topic modeling on titles and abstracts of 55,442 academic papers in 85 SSCI journals from 2001 to 2020 in order to analyze research topic trend in library and information science. The analysis revealed four major themes of library management, informatics, library service, and library system in 10 major topics. The results also showed subtopics in information science and library management topic areas to change over time, while library service remained stable over 20 years to establish itself as a robust topic. In addition, medical information emerged as a significant sub-topic of informatics, thus exemplifying the interdisciplinary characteristics of library and information science field.

  • This study examined the relative retrieval effectiveness after relevance feedback between two systems (Title/Abstract and Full-text) using four different sets of relevance judgment. Four relevance levels (not relevant, marginally relevant, relevant, highly relevant) are also used, each of which is determined by referees giving a relevance score to documents. This study also investigated how much the average precision was improved after relevance feedback when "marginally relevant" documents are included in the relevant class with the Title/Abstract system, and with the Full-text retrieval system as well. It is found that the Title/Abstract system benefited from relevance feedback with the marginally relevant documents. In case of the Title/Abstract system, the higher percentage of improvement was consistently obtained when including the marginally relevant documents in the relevance class, however the result was vice versa in case of the Full-text retrieval system. It implied that the marginally relevant documents in the relevant class had caused noises in the Full-text retrieval system.

  • This study is to propose the possibility of narrative or story as a research methodology in the field of library and information science. To do this, I discuss the power and possibility of storytelling as a epistemological method of social science. Later, I look into turn to narrative in western scholarly traditions. And then, I introduced the process and the characteristic of the narrative inquiry as a subject and a methodology of research. I compare to another research methodology, ethnography and phenomenological research. At last, I reviewed the literature which is conducted by the methodology of narrative inquiry in the field of library and information science. I consider the possibility of adaptation of narrative inquiry in the field.

  • This study describes validity and reliability, which are important factors to obtain scientific results in the study of library and information science. Specifically, this paper starts by exploring the definition and types of validity and reliability. It then analyzes the factors which affect to validity and reliability in developing test-items through the previous studies. It is proposed that validity and reliability be regarded as basic and important components to solve problems related to library and information science in the future scientifically.

  • This study examined the frequency, format, and activity of Internet references of four major journals in Library and Information Science in Korea. Sampled articles of each journal were published during 2002-2009. The results show five implications. 1) Overall 15.5% of all references were Internet references. 2) The number of Internet references has continuously increased since 2002. 3) The type of Internet references were most commonly "web document(84.3%), followed by" PDF(14%). 4) Nearly 55% of Internet reference were ".or(org)" and ".ac(edu))". 5) The percentage of inactive Internet references increased from 34.4% at 3 years to 44.1% at 5 years and to 53.3% at 10 years after publication. Although this study may not be representative of the entire field, it shows that Internet references occurred frequently and were often inaccessible within years after publication.
