Reviews in Medical Geography: Spatial Epidemiology of Vector-Borne Diseases (벡터매개 질병(vector-borne diseases) 공간역학을 중심으로 한 보건지리학의 최근 연구)

  • Climate changes may cause substantial changes in spatial patterns and distribution of vector-borne diseases (VBD's), which will result in a significant threat to humans and emerge as an important public health problem that the international society needs to solve. As global warming becomes widespread and the Korean peninsula characterizes subtropical climate, the potentials of climate-driven disease outbreaks and spread rapidly increase with changes in land use, population distributions, and ecological environments. Vector-borne diseases are typically infected by insects such as mosquitoes and ticks, and infected hosts and vectors increased dramatically as the habitat ranges of the VBD agents have been expanded for the past 20 years. Medical geography integrates and processes a wide range of public health data and indicators at both local and regional levels, and ultimately helps researchers identify spatiotemporal mechanism of the diseases determining interactions and relationships between spatial and non-spatial data. Spatial epidemiology is a new and emerging area of medical geography integrating geospatial sciences, environmental sciences, and epidemiology to further uncover human health-environment relationships. An introduction of GIS-based disease monitoring system to the public health surveillance system is among the important future research agenda that medical geography can significantly contribute to. Particularly, real-time monitoring methods, early-warning systems, and spatial forecasting of VBD factors will be key research fields to understand the dynamics of VBD's.

Research Trends of the Jellyfish Blooms (해파리 대량발생의 연구동향)

  • The frequency and abundance of jellyfish, presumably related with climate change, fisheries overexploitation, marine pollution including land reclamation and dyke construction, are increasing worldwide. This feature has attracted interest and concerns from general public and public officials, and government is seeking how the damages could be prevented or reduced down. Korean government, having recent huge blooms of jellyfish, engaged in reducing and/or countermeasuring jellyfish damages. Korean research themes include ecology and physiology of blooming jellyfish species, understanding of the blooming mechanism, and focus on the eradication of blooming jellyfish, without governmental integrative management plan. EU is undertaking scientific projects focused on understanding of the mechanism and control of jellyfish blooms, and establishment of an integrative management. In USA, government has established the code on jellyfish management for conserving and protecting the fish and shellfish resources and one of its department is specially assigned to monitor jellyfish appearance, undertake research, and prepare management plan. Japan also assigned a department and research institute for jellyfish research. Their main interest is to predict jellyfish drifting and mass bloom. Compared to Korea, USA, EU and Japan emphasize integrative management that includes ecological understanding, public education and outreaches, communication and control, if possible, of jellyfish blooms, based on scientific data. We suggest then, 1) establishment of an integrative scientific system consisting of policy and scientific experts to prepare inter-ministrial integrative management plan to effectively combat jellyfish blooms and to maximize the scientific result; 2) concept change from harmful to exploitable marine animal in policy making and research; and 3) active education and information service for people. We expect that these suggestions can be useful for jellyfish management and policy making on another harmful marine organisms.

  • 웹이 등장하면서 지금까지 인터넷 상에서 텍스트와 이미지를 이용하여 정보를 표현하고 전달하는 방법이 가장 많이 사용되어왔다. 그러나 웹 관련 기술의 비약적인 발달과 네트워크 속도의 증가 및 인터넷의 급속한 보급으로 단순한 텍스트와 이미지 중심의 HTML 문서를 이용한 정보의 전달이 아닌 멀티미디어 데이터를 이용한 정보의 표현과 전달이 점차 증대되고 있다. 이에 따라 멀티미디어 데이터를 전송하기 위한 스트리밍 프로토콜도 등장하였다. 최근에는 컴퓨터의 성능 증가 및 네트워크 속도의 증가(초고속 통신 서비스의 보급)에 의해 멀티미디어 데이터의 전송이 가능하게 됨으로써 기존의 공중파나 CATV 방송국의 형태 지니고 인터넷 상에서 실시간 생방송 서비스와 VOD(Video On Demand) 서비스를 제공하는 인터넷 방송국이 급속하게 생겨나고 있다.   • Purpose: The purpose of this study is to prepare an environment that can provide high-quality 119 rescue services by analyzing the causes of casualties at the water rescue and suggesting improvement plans to prevent them. Method: 5 major cases were analyzed among firefighters' casualty accidents during rescue activities related to the water over the past 10 years for case study. And the causes of the accidents were analyzed in terms of 4 values (Man, Machine, Media, Management) through the 4M analysis technique. Result: ① man: the main causes are lack of awareness of on-site safety, etc ② machine: the problem of the absence of the equipment itself, etc ③ media: the lack of information on the rescue site and the poor rescue environment conditions, ④ management : the main causes were the absence and inadequacy of the response manual for each rescue site, Conclusion: ① man: knowledge of SOP and reinforcement of education and training, etc. ② machine: there are measures such as the introduction of equipment suitable for the changing rescue site, ③media: providing sufficient information about the rescue activity environment and conducting regular road training, ④ management: policy suggestions such as establishment and dissemination of on-site safety management plans and manuals were derived.

The strategy of an educational policy in the MEXT (Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology) of Japan: Focusing on Super Science High school (SSHs) (일본과학문부성의 교육정책전략: 수퍼사이언스고등학교 추진현황을 중심으로)

  • In Japan accumulating intellectual assets by enhancing science and technology is the only way to survive the global competition. To enhance science and technology, it is important to improve science literacy the public and to foster human resources for science and technology, Therefore, MEXT (Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology) is now working with various projects. One of the projects for attaining the purpose is Science Literacy Enhancement Initiative. This initiative is a brand-new package of several projects to enhance math and science education in high and middle schools including (1) Super Science High school (SSHs) and (2) Science Partnership Program. The purpose of this study was to investigate concretely about the situation of promotion of SSHs paying attention to three high schools (TAKASAKI high school, HORIOKA high school and RITUMEIKAN high school) specified as SSHs. Furthermore, some suggestions about gifted education were discussed.

  • Companies strive to have the ability to flexibly respond to environmental changes in modern society with its rapidly changing business environment. That is, companies try to achieve the corporate performance by using a variety of strategies since companies that don't go along with changes in industry are likely to fall behind. Also, the corporate performance is a key element in national competitiveness, and government is willing to support companies to maximize their performance in various ways. This study examines whether there is a difference between corporate strategies and government policies according to the retention and the type of certification of innovation. The company's strategy configuration effort is largely divided into exploration and exploitation of external knowledge, while the government's policy is divided into direct support, indirect support, and financial support. The corporate performance is analyzed using technological performance; innovative perspective and the sales; and the actual corporate performance as proxy variables. As a result, the variable affecting the performance differs according to the retention of certification of innovation. The variable affecting the corporate performance differs according to the type of certification of innovation as well. Therefore, it was found that companies can achieve the corporate performance by considering the situation at hand and the differentiated action strategies depending on the type of certification of innovation.

  • As electronic commerce systems have been widely used, the necessity of adaptive e-commerce agent systems has been increased. These kinds of agents can monitor customer's purchasing behaviors, clutter them in similar categories, and induce customer's preference from each category. In order to implement our adaptive e-commerce agent system, we focus on following 3 components-the monitor agent which can monitor customer's browsing/purchasing data and abstract them, the conceptual cluster agent which cluster customer's abstract data, and the customer profile agent which generate profile from cluster, In order to infer more accurate customer's preference, we propose a 2 layered structure consisting of conceptual cluster and inductive profile generator. Many systems have been suffered from errors in deriving user profiles by using a single structure. However, our proposed 2 layered structure enables us to improve the qualify of user profile by clustering user purchasing behavior in advance. This approach enables us to build more user adaptive e-commerce system according to user purchasing behavior.

  • In recent years two reflection methods, i.e. GPR and seismic Impact-Echo, are usually performed to obtain the information about tunnel lining structures composed of concrete lining, shotcrete, water barrier, and voids at the back of lining. However, they do not lead to a desirable resolution sufficient for the inspection of tunnel safety, due to many problems of interest including primarily (1) inner thin layers of lining structure itself in comparison with the wavelength of source wavelets, (2) dominant unwanted surface wave arrivals, (3) inadequate measuring strategy. In this sense, seismic physical modeling is a useful tool, with the use of the full information about the known physical model, to handle such problems, especially to study problems of wave propagation in such fine structures that are not amenable to theory and field works as well. Thus, this paper deals with various results of seismic physical modeling to enable to show a possibility of detecting the inner layer boundaries of tunnel lining structures. To this end, a physical model analogous to a lining structure was built up, measured and processed in the same way as performed in regular reflection surveys. The evaluated seismic section gives a clear picture of the lining structure, that will open up more consistent direction of research into the development of an efficient measuring and processing technology.

The effect of work-family conflict on depression in married working women. (직장 기혼 여성의 일-가정 갈등이 우울에 미치는 영향)

  • The purpose of this study is to examine the effects of work-family conflict factors on depression in Korean married women. For the analysis of the research, we were used in the 5th year data of Korean Longitudinal Survey of Women and Families. The subjects of this study were married women who were living with their husbands and wage workers, and the final analysis was 1,299. As a hierarchical regression analysis result, the work-family conflict of the working married women had a significant effect on depression. Especially, conflict from family to work has the highest effect on depression(${\beta}=.150$, p<0.01). This study suggests that traditional gender role pressures can have a negative impact on the mental health of working women. Therefore, it is necessary to take appropriate social policy measures to alleviate work-family conflicts of married working women.

Path-Planning for Group Movement in Dynamic Environments (동적 환경에서 그룹 이동을 위한 경로 계획)

  • Path planning is an essential problem to make virtual characters navigate in many applications including computer games. In many cases, multiple characters move in a group and qualitative aspects of planned paths are emphasized rather than optimality unlike Robotics. In this paper, we propose a two-level path planning algorithm in which the global path is planned for a single character specified as a leader and then the local path is planned to avoid dynamic obstacles while the group following this path. The space for group movement is achieved in the form of square grid array called a grid window. Member characters are located relatively to the leader within a space and moved. The static environment is reduced to the configuration space of this grid window to generate a roadmap on which a grid window can move. In local path planning, only the leader avoids dynamic obstacles by using an artificial potential field and the rest of members are located relatively to the leader in the grid window, which reduces computational load. Efficient algorithms to implement the proposed planning methods are introduced. The simulation results show that a group can handle with dynamic obstacles effectively while moving along the planned path for a static environment.
