  • This study has developed a small solar powered UAV and performed its flight tests. In daylight, a solar powered UAV flies by using some of electricity generated from solar cells, and stores the remainder into battery. At night it flies by using electricity from battery. A solar powered UAV should have aerodynamically efficient configurations, light-weight, strong wing and fuselage. Its electric propulsion system and solar power system should also be very efficient. In the present study the solar powered UAV and its solar power system are developed for 12 hour continuous flight and the flight tests are performed to verify its performance. The flight tests performed in fall and winter to prove the present solar powered UAV is successful in four-season 12 hour flight.

  • This paper explores three-dimensional unsteady computational fluid dynamic (CFD) analyses with an overset grid technique to analyse the wake effect created by a rotating propeller on a hand-launched unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV). Additionally, the influence of actual aileron deflection on the equilibrium condition of the rolling moment is examined in various hand-launched take-off conditions. The results of this study demonstrate the importance of initial aileron deflection in increasing the initial rolling stability during the hand-launched take-off process. Furthermore, an aerodynamic database is constructed to rapidly predict the aileron set values required for different take-off speeds and angle-of-attacks.

  • To design a control law of an aircraft, an accurate aircraft dynamic model is required. To obtain an aerodynamic database (DB) to build a dynamic model, a large number of wind tunnel tests are typically required. However, when flight test data of target aircraft exist such as in the process of unmanned conversion of a manned aircraft, an aircraft dynamic model can be obtained through a parameter estimation method and a DB tuning procedure. This paper describes a nonlinear model construction process and a verification method for KC-100 OPV aircraft. Flight data compatibility analysis was performed to determine suitability of the estimation method application. Linear model estimation was performed using the maximum likelihood estimation method. Results of aerodynamic DB tuning process and verification applying the FFS standard to the nonlinear model constructed are presented.

  • Recently, the global attention is focused on the development of the renewal aero-propulsion systems proved in the air pollution, the noise, the great operational cost, safety and risks. Especially, various study are conducting for the development of the advanced high power to weight ratio aircraft through the significant reduction of fuel consumption and upgrade of the propulsion efficiency, using the alternative propulsion system developments such as hydrogen and solar power system. The hybrid propulsion system can be the representative propulsion system which get the power sources by combining the merits of two or more power sources. In this study, the advancement trends, characteristics, design method which can be applied to the renewal future UAV development.
