Assuming that a wireless link is mostly used at the network edge and the wireless NIC driver keeps monitoring the error rate of its link, this paper proposes an enhanced TCP congestion control, TCP-L (TCP Link-Aware). TCP-L predicts true congestion losses occurred inside the wired link area by utilizing the wireless link error rate. As a result, it mitigates performance degradation caused from TCP congestion control actions when segments losses occur in a wireless link. Experimental results show that TCP-L provides better performance and fairness in lossy wireless links than existing TCP congestion control schemes. Our approach utilizing the characteristic of the link at TCP could be well adapted to new wireless environments such as Cognitive Radio and ACK-less IEEE 802.11, where a frame may be delivered with a very long delay or lost in the link.

Wireless mesh network is similar to ad-hoc network, so when transferred to the data packet in the wireless environment, interfered factor arise. When TCP(Transport Control Protocol) was created, however as it was design based on wired link, wireless link made more transmission error than wired link. It is existent problem that TCP unfairness and congestion collapse over wireless mesh network. But packet losses due to transmission errors are more frequent. The cause of transmission error in wireless ad-hoc network may be inexactly regarded as indications of network congestion. And then, Congestion Control Algorithm was running by this situation causes the TCP performance degradation. In this paper, proposed TCP can adaptively regulate the congestion window through moving node in the Wireless Mesh Network. And it enhanced the performance.

Due to the recent advance in wireless communication technology, it is now more demanding to enjoy the high quality of service in the wireless Internal. TCP, which many Internet applications depend on for the end-to-end transport service, is optimized for the wired environment. Consequently, TCP suffers from severe performance degradation in the wireless environment where the bit error rate is relatively high and the burst errors frequently take place. In this paper, we propose a Robust TCP algorithm, which can effectively react against the burst error and significantly improve the TCP performance in wireless Internet. It is shown through the simulations that the Robust TCP performs well in the wireless environment, especially under the burst error condition.

In this paper, we have analyzed the TCP throughput of Portable Internet system in 2.3GHz wireless environment with considering user's mobility speed. As the Portable Internet uses large cells compared to wireless LAM and supports user's nobility, we have adapted different wireless channel model to derive the TCP throughput of the system. We have assumed wireless channel is Rayleigh fading channel and the channel is modeled as two-state Markov model with which user's nobility speed can be considered by varying transition matrix of the model. from the simulation results, we have known that higher TCP throughput under the slow fading than under the fast fading. Because the TCP throughput is closely related to the sender's congestion control, the more congestion control is done by the sender, the lower TCP throughput we have. The more congestion control is caused in the sender under the fast fading than the slow fading so the lower TCP throughput is resulted in the fast fading environment.
Wireless mesh network is flexible network like Ad hoc network or bluetooth together based on base station. But, wireless mesh network shows high packet loss and when TCP was created, however as it was design based on wired link, wireless link made more transmission error than wired link. It is existent problem of TCP congestion control algorithm that TCP unfairness and congestion collapse over wireless mesh network. When TCP operation occurs with the packet loss where is not the congestion loss, it brings the performance degradation which is serious. In this paper, in order to improve efficient TCP congestion control algorithm in wireless mesh network, we proposed that TCP can adaptively regulate the congestion window in wireless link.
TCP(Transmission Control Protocol) is one of the most important Internet protocols, which is widely used in wireless networks as well as wired networks. However, when TCP is deployed for wireless networks, it takes severe performance degradation because TCP was designed for wired network. To overcome this drawback, a number of TCP variants have been proposed in the literature. However, most previous schemes did not consider TCP enhancement over heterogeneous networks. In heterogeneous networks, an mobile node (MN) may move from one access network to another(i.e., vertical handover). In the case of vertical handover, an MN experiences a TCP performance degradation caused by the packet loss and the sudden change of link characteristics between two different access networks. In this work, we investigate the TCP performance degradation occurred in vortical handover across heterogeneous networks. First, we have conducted the measurement study over GPRS-WLAN testbed. In the measurement study. we observed the TCP performance degradation in the case of handover from WLAN to GPRS. In order to study more different TCP behaviors during vertical handover, we performed comprehensive simulations using a network simulator 2(ns-2). Based on measurement and simulation results, we investigated how to improve TCP performance in vertical handover and we concluded that the existing mechanisms cannot be perfect solutions and new mechanisms are strongly required.
Nowadays, most widely used transport protocol, TCP is tuned to perform well in traditional networks where packet losses occur mostly because of congestion. TCP performs reliable end-to-end packet transmission under the assumption of low packet error rate. However, networks with wireless links suffer from significant losses due to high error rate and handoffs. TCP responds to all losses by invoking congestion control and avoidance algorithms, resulting in inefficient use of network bandwidth and degraded end-to-end performance in that system. To solve this problem, several methods have been proposed. In this paper, we analyse and compare these methods and propose appropriate model for improving TCP performance in the network with wireless links. This model uses TCP selective acknowledgement (SACK) option between TCP ends, and also uses caching method at the base station. Our simulation results show that using TCP SACK option with base station caching significantly reduces unnecessary duplicate retransmissions and recover packet losses effectively.
Mobile portable devices for wireless network solely depend on a limited battery power. Therefore, we need to design for wireless communication protocols with an energy efficiency. TCP-Westwood is one of the most important approaches on TCP performance improvement in wireless environments that estimates the available bandwidth by using the sampling mechanism. The advantage is that data can be transmitted efficiently using the estimation of available bandwidth. However, when the sender with TCP-Westwood is in a wireless environment, it does not consider of the sampling mechanism operation. In this thesis, a new energy saving transport protocol, called E2TP(Energy Efficient Transport Protocol), is proposed to solve problems which occur when the sender with TCP-Westwood is in a wireless environment. Also, when there are packet loss while doing frequent link error in a wireless environment, E2TP provides the instantaneous segment size adjustment for a more efficient data retransmission. The simulation result proves that the proposed E2TP has better performance in energy efficiency and throughput than both TCP and TCP-Westwood.
Even though a lot of researches to improve the performance of TCP over wireless networks have been performed, the performance of TCP cannot satisfy users under high packet loss rate of wireless networks. This paper addresses the problem of TCP Westwood under high packet loss rate and reveals the reasons through the extensive simulation analysis. The ABE(Available Bandwidth Estimation) of TCP westwood becomes incorrect due to TCP dynamics of loss recovery. Based on this observation, we propose two algorithms for enhancing the correctness of ABE. We have evaluated the effects of the proposed algorithms through simulation. The proposed algorithms have achieved more correct ABE under the packet loss rate less than 1%.
