This paper suggests the energy-efficient message delivery scheme and the software platform which exploits the multiple network interfaces of the mobile terminals and GPS in the current mobile devices. The mobile terminals determine the delivery method among 'direct', 'indirect', and 'WAN' based on the position information of itself and other terminals. 'Direct' method sends a message directly to the target terminal using local RAT. 'Indirect' method extends the service area by exploiting intermediate terminals as relay node. If the target terminal is too far to reach through 'direct' or 'indirect' method, the message is sent using wireless WAN technology. Our proposed scheme exploits the position information and, thus, power consumption is drastically reduced in determining handover time and direction. Network simulation results show that our proposed delivery scheme improves the message transfer efficiency and the handover detection latency. We implemented a message platform in a smart phone realizing the proposed delivery scheme. We compared our platform with other typical message platforms from energy efficiency aspect by observing the real power consumption and applying the mathematical modeling. The comparison results show that our platform requires significantly less power.
Due to the ease of deployment and the extended coverage, wireless mesh networks (WMNs) are gaining popularity and research focus. For example, the routing protocols that enhance the throughput on the WMNs and the link quality measurement schemes are among the popular research topics. However, most of these works assume that the locations of the mesh routers are predetermined. Since the operators in an Indoor mesh network can determine the locations of the mesh routers by themselves, it is essential to the WMN performance for the mesh routers to be initially placed by considering the performance issues. In this paper, we propose a mesh router placement scheme based on genetic algorithms by considering the characteristics of WMNs such as interference and topology. There have been many related works that solve similar problems such as base station placement in cellular networks and gateway node selection in WMNs. However, none of them actually considers the interference to the mesh clients from non-associated mesh routers in determining the locations of the mesh routers. By simulations, we show that the proposed scheme improves the performance by 30-40% compared to the random selection scheme.

In this paper, we suggest a secure data dissemination by Lightweight Individual Encryption Multicast scheme over wireless sensor networks using the individual encryption method with Forward Error Correction instead of the group key encryption method. In wireless sensor networks, a sink node disseminates multicast data to the number of sensor nodes to update the up to date software such as network re-programming and here the group key encryption method is the general approach to provide a secure transmission. This group key encryption approach involves re-key management to provide a strong secure content distribution, however it is complicated to provide group key management services in wireless sensor networks due to limited resources of computing, storage, and communication. Although it is possible to control an individual node, the cost problem about individual encryption comes up and the individual encryption method is difficult to apply in multicast data transmission on wireless sensor networks. Therefore we only use 0.16% of individually encrypted packets to securely transmit data with the unicast to every node and the rest 99.84% non-encrypted encoded packets is transmitted with the multicast for network performance.
Indexing techniques are used to implement selective tuning in wireless environments Indices are broadcast together with data to help mobile clients locate the required information. As a result, clients stay in doze mode most of the time. The drawback of this solution is that broadcast cycles are lengthened due to additional index information. In location-aware mobile services(LAMSs), it is important to reduce the query response time, since a late query response nay contain out-of-date information. In this paper, we present a broadcast-based spatial query processing method (BBS) designed to support k-NN query processing. In the BBS, broadcasted data objects are sorted sequentially based on their locations, and the server broadcasts the location dependent data along with an index segment. The performance of this scheme is investigated in relation to various environmental variables, such as the distributions of the data objects, the average speed of the clients and the size of the service area.
Many studies that improve the efficiency of data collection and a network's lifetime by using a mobile sink have been conducted using wireless sensor networks. If a drone is used as a mobile sink, the drone can collect data more efficiently than can existing mobile sinks operating on the ground because the drone can minimize the effects of obstacles and the terrain. In this paper, we propose a rendezvous node selection scheme which considers estimated drone's trajectory and data collection latency of sensor networks for reliable data collection, when a drone whose trajectory is not predetermined works with terrestrial wireless sensor networks. A selected rendezvous node on the ground collects data from the entire network and it sends then collected data to the drone via direct communication. We also verify that the proposed scheme is more reliable than previous schemes without considering the drone's trajectory and data collection latency.
In recent, there have been done many studies on applications that monitor the information of mobile objects using Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN). A density query that finds out an area spread by density that a target object requires in the whole sensing field is a field of object monitoring applications. In this paper, we propose a novel homogeneous network-based in-network density query processing scheme that significantly reduces query processing costs and assures high accuracy. This scheme is based on the possibility-based expected region selection technique and the result compensation technique in order to enhance the accuracy of the density query and to minimize its energy consumption. To show the superiority of our proposed scheme, we compare it with the existing density query processing scheme. As a result, our proposed scheme reduces about 92% energy consumption for query processing, while its network lifetime increases compared to the existing scheme. In addition, the proposed scheme guarantees higher accuracy than the existing scheme in terms of the query result.
The rapid proliferation of wireless networks and mobile computing applications has changed the landscape of network security. Anomaly detection is a pattern recognition task whose goal is to report the occurrence of abnormal or unknown behavior in a given system being monitored. This paper presents an efficient rough set based anomaly detection method that can effectively identify a group of especially harmful internal masqueraders in cellular mobile networks. Our scheme uses the trace data of wireless application layer by a user as feature value. Based on the feature values, the use pattern of a mobile's user can be captured by rough sets, and the abnormal behavior of the mobile can be also detected effectively by applying a roughness membership function considering weighted feature values. The performance of our scheme is evaluated by a simulation. Simulation results demonstrate that the anomalies are well detected by the method that assigns different weighted values to feature attributes depending on importance.
In this paper, we propose a novel filtering method for processing continuous skyline queries on wireless sensor network environments. The existing filtering methods use the filter based on router paths. However, because these filters are applied not to a whole area but to a partial area, these methods send almost data of sensor nodes to transmit to the base station and have no sufficient effect in terms of energy efficiency. Therefore, we propose an efficient method to dramatically reduce the transmission data of sensors through applying a low-cost and effective filter to all sensor nodes. The proposed effective filter is generated by using characteristics such as the data locality and the clustering of sensors. An extensive performance study verifies the merits of our new method.
A wireless sensor network communication technique has been broadly studied with continuous advances in ubiquitous computing environment. Especially, because the resource of the sensor node is limited, it is important to reduce the communication energy by using an energy-efficient routing protocol. The existing cluster-based routing protocols have a problem that they cannot select a cluster head efficiently by randomly choosing a head. In addition, because the existing cluster-based routing protocols do not support the large scale of network, they cannot be used for various applications. To solve the above problems, we, in this paper, propose a new cluster-based routing protocol using representative paths. The proposed protocol constructs an efficient cluster with distributed cluster heads by creating representative paths based on hop count. In addition, a new routing protocol supports multi-hop routing for data communication between a cluster member node and a cluster head as well as between cluster heads. Finally, we show that our protocol outperforms LEACH and Multihop-LEACH in terms of reliability and scalability.
A research for middleware of WSN can provide sensor applications with avoiding tight coupling of hardware, ease of development, and abstract data access. However, previous works have some limitations which should install their own middleware onto the all sensor nodes resulting in computational and communication overhead. In order to address it, we proposed a virtual sensor overlay network, called TinyONet-Lite which introduced virtual sensors to model a virtual counterpart of physical sensors. These virtual sensors dynamically grouped into an overlay network, Slice, which provides middleware services. We implemented TinyONet-Lite on mote class hardware with TinyOS. In accordance with experiments and comparison with existing researches, TinyONet-Lite was proved to show advantages of extensibility, dynamic service composition and reducing overhead.
