  • The IEEE 802.15.3 high-rate WPAN has been developed to communicate with devices within l0m. A piconet consists of one Piconet Coordinator (PNC) and several devices. The devices associated with a parent piconet can become child PNCs in order to form child piconets. A mesh network made up of a parent piconet and several child piconets can support multi-hop communications. In this paper, we analyze the maximum level and the avaliable superframe size to make the best use of bandwidth for multi-hop communications, and compare the analysis with the simulation results in terms of time to discover devices for multi-hop communications. The average number of levels in mesh networks is shown to be about 1.9 when the number of devices increases within a fixed area. We have also shown that the maximum available superframe size is 52ms and the discovery time is approximately 155ms.

  • Recently, wireless mesh network has been focused as a core technology for resolving the issues of shadow zone and distributed bypass route as it has broad service coverage as well as good scalability features. It, however, provides users with relatively lower QoS than infrastructure-based networks. In order for addressing this QoS issue and also enhancing the routing performance of mobile WiMax mesh network, this paper proposes a load sensing QoS routing (LSQR) scheme. In the proposed LSQR, each node figures out network congestion status and selects a bypass route accordingly. With this scheme, we can expect good load balancing effect by changing the routing paths from centralized links to distributed links under a heavy traffic condition. From the simulation results using NS-2, it has been verified that the LSQR shows lower packet loss rates and data transmission delays than the existing representative routing schemes.

  • In OFDMA-based wireless mesh networks, synchronization of carrier frequencies among adjacent nodes is known to be difficult. In this paper, a distributed synchronization technique is proposed to solve the synchronization problem in OFDMA-based wireless mesh networks by using the bio-inspired algorithm. In the proposed approach, carrier frequencies of all nodes in a mesh network are converged into one frequency by locally synchronizing the frequencies of adjacent nodes. It may take a long time to be converged in some topologies since the convergence characteristic of carrier frequencies in a mesh network may vary depending on the size of the network and deployment of nodes. It is shown that fast frequency synchronization, not heavily depending on the topology, can be achieved through the proposed algorithm with an adjustable weight.

  • We propose a novel routing protocol selection scheme based on the application feature in wireless mesh network. Each application has its own feature such as its packet size. For example, text messenger generates short size packets and file transfer application generates long size packets. Routing protocols in wireless mesh network discover the route with different features. Some find shortest hop routes; others find the routes consisting of high bandwidth though they have more hops. The proposed scheme selects the routing protocol by matching the feature of routing protocol and that of application. This paper shows the system that we have developed for supporting mesh routing as well as the proposed scheme and experimental results.

  • A large amount of work has been done in the areas of routing, MAC, QoS, capacity, location service, cooperative communication, fault tolerance, mobility models and various applications of mesh networks thanks to their merits of cost-effective way of deployment and flexibility in extending wireline services. Although multi-path routing protocols have been proposed to be used to provide QoS and fault-tolerance, there has not been any significant results discussed that support both in the literature to our best knowledge as they are often required in military and public safety applications. In this paper, we present a novel routing protocol for a mesh network based on the OFDM-TDMA collision-free MAC that discovers and maintains multiple paths that allows retransmitting and forwarding packets that have been blocked due to a link failure using an alternative next-hop node such that the delay-capacity tradeoff is reduced and the reliability is enhanced. Simulation results show that the proposed protocol performs well in terms of both the QoS and delivery ratio.

  • Mobile systems have relatively limited resources such as low memory, slow CPU, or low power comparing to desktop systems. In this paper, we present a new 3D mesh connectivity coding algorithm especially optimized for mobile systems(i.e., mobile phones). By using adaptive octree data structure for vertex positions, a new distance-based connectivity coding is proposed. Our algorithm uses fixed point arithmetic and minimizes dynamic memory allocation, appropriate for mobile systems. We also demonstrate test data to show the utility of our mobile 3D mesh codec.

  • As a special type of Wireless Ad Hoc Networks, Wireless Mesh Networks (WMNs) have become the comer stone of research issues. Due to the limited operational environment of WMNs, an efficient connected dominating set (CDS) construction scheme is an important concern since it has been found extremely useful in broadcasting, routing and virtual backbone construction. In this paper, we propose a distributed Bandwidth-Interference aware CDS construction scheme to improve the network performance via two parameters such as node's number of neighbor and link bandwidth. Our CDS construction scheme selects the node that has more neighbors and enough bandwidth to support more end-devices in order to enhance overall network throughput and reliability. We confirm through simulations and show that our scheme constructs the CDS with the small subset of DS and the link that has better bandwidth.

  • In this paper, we propose a distributed time synchronization technique for OFDMA- based wireless mesh communication systems. The proposed technique employs the bio-inspired algorithm for self-time synchronization in the physical layer. To achieve the network synchronicity, the proposed technique updates the transmission time and the FFT window using the TDoA information of received signals from the neighbor nodes. The proposed technique can achieve fast self-synchronization among nodes with a simple algorithm, without the need of a centralized controller. The performance of the proposed time synchronization technique is evaluated by simulation in terms of convergence speed and convergence probability.

  • As a standard of WMNs, IEEE 802.11s supports two kinds of MAC algorithm: a mandatory EDCA used by IEEE 802.11e and an optional MCCA. While EDCA classifies traffic according to four Access Categories (AC) and offer differentiated service using a classified priority, MCCA can guarantee the specific bandwidth of users with a TDMA-style bandwidth reservation scheme between mesh routers. In case that a flow is VBR traffic of a multimedia application, MCCA has disadvantage that the reserved bandwidth does not be used entirely, though it guarantees required bandwidth of users and fairness using bandwidth reservation with neighbors' node. In this paper, we showed a problem that is wastes the reserved bandwidth when MCCA is enabled and proposed a new scheduling algorithm to prevent waste of bandwidth and to improve network utilization effectively, named Resource Sharing Round Robin (RSRR) scheduling. Finally we showed simulation results that performance of a proposed RSRR is better than the legacy MCCA through NS-2 simulation.
