  • We measured the body composition, including bone mineral density (BMD) and food resource availability using dual energy X-ray absorptiometry and the carbon and nitrogen stable isotope ratios of body condition of 4 anuran species(Hyla japonica, Glandirana rugosa, Pelophylax nigromaculatus, Lithobates catesbeianus) in South Korea. Additionally, the carbon and nitrogen stable isotope ratios were employed to determine the food resource availability of anurans. We figured out the relationship between the body composition, including BMDs and food resource availability. The body composition and BMDs did not differ between male and female while there was difference among the species. Food resource availability and BMDs were the highest in L. catesbeianus, the lowest in H. japonica. BMDs tended to increase with higher food resource availability. Body composition and BMDs, which represent the body condition of an individual, can be used as an ecological indicator to assess the stability of the habitat of anurans.

  • Amphibians, sensitive to external environmental changes, serve as bioindicator species for assessing alterations or disturbances in local ecosystems. It is known that one-third of amphibian species within the order Anura are at risk of extinction due to anthropogenic threats such as habitat destruction and fragmentation caused by urbanization. To develop effective protection and conservation strategies for anuran amphibians, species surveys that account for population characteristics are essential. This study aimed to investigate the potential for citizen participation in ecological monitoring using the mating calls of anura species. We also proposed suitable quality control measures to mitigate errors and biases, ensuring the extraction of reliable species occurrence data. The Citizen Science project was carried out nationwide from April 1 to August 31, 2022, targeting 12 species of anura amphibians in Korea. Citizens voluntarily participated in voice signal monitoring, where they listened to anura species' mating calls and recorded them using a mobile application. Additionally, we established a quality control process to extract reliable species occurrence data, categorizing errors and biases from citizen-collected data into three levels: omission, commission, and incorrect identification. A total of 6,808 observations were collected during the citizen participation in anura species vocalization monitoring. Through the quality control process, errors and biases were identified in 1,944 (28.55%) of the 6,808 data. The most common type of error was omission, accounting for 922 cases (47.43%), followed by incorrect identification with 540 cases (27.78%), and commission with 482 cases (24.79%). During the Citizen Science project, we successfully recorded the mating calls of 10 out of the 12 anuran amphibian species in Korea, excluding the Asian toads (Bufo gargarizans Cantor), Korean brown frog (Rana coreana). Difficulties in collecting mating calls were primarily attributed to challenges in observing due to population decline or discrepancies between the breeding season of non-emergent individuals and the timing of the citizen science project. This study represents the first investigation of distribution status and species emergence data collection through mating calls of anura species in Korea based on citizen participation. It can serve as a foundation for designing future bioacoustic monitoring that incorporates citizen science and quality control measures for citizen science data.

  • Tailless aircraft have advantages of low visibility compared to conventional aircraft, but drawback of poor stability as well which makes designing controller difficult. The controller design is more difficult, especially when the center of gravity moves due to store release or fuel consumption during flight. In this paper, an L1 adaptive controller is proposed as a way to overcome these problems. The reliability and performance of the controllers were verified by non-linear simulations. RPV Flying Quality Design criteria were used for design criteria. Using the simulation, it is shown that the adaptive controller maintains stability of the unmanned aircraft for sudden large change in the inertial properties. It is also shown that the calculation burden can be reduced when it is used with the gain scheduling method.

  • The ultrastructure of spermatozoa in urodeles and primitive anurans was examined and compared. The spermatozoa of urodeles are characterized by seven plesiomorphies in subacrosomal cone, endounclear canal. perforatorium, ring, marginal filament, undulating membrane and tail axis. Most primitive anuran spermatozoa have no marginal filament, subacrosomal cone and ring structure with the exception of having the subacrosomal cone in Ascaphus and the ring in Discohlossus as compared with those of urodeles. Persistence of the subacrosomal cone and the ring structure is typical in most urodeles and is further linked with the primitive anurans. Therefore, these characters are regarded as symplesiomorphies in urodeles and primitive anurans. The organization of sperm tail, endounclear canal and perforatorium indicates a close phylogenetic relationship between urodeles and the primitives anurans.

  • In this experimental study, the dynamic stability derivatives of a tailless lambda-shape UAV are estimated from time history data of aerodynamic moments measured from the internal balance while the test model is forced to oscillate at given frequencies and amplitudes. A 3-axis forced oscillation apparatus is designed to induce decoupled roll, yaw, pitch oscillations respectively. The results show that the roll damping derivatives remain stable at the entire range of angle of attack tested, whereas the pitch damping derivatives become unstable beyond $15^{\circ}$ angle of attack. The amplitude and frequency have little impact on roll damping derivatives while the smaller amplitude and frequency of oscillation improves the pitch stability. The yaw damping derivative values are fairly small as expected for a tailless configuration. The results indicate that the proposed methodology and test apparatus area valid for estimating the dynamic stability derivatives of a tailless UAV.

  • A combination of ultraviolet irradiation and egg rotation was applied to Korean frogs to study the mechanisms of the establishment of the dorsal-ventral polarity. Rotation of the uncleaved egg was capable of preventing the characteristic syndromes associated with UV irradiation. As well, brief rotation of the egg before cleavage relocates the site of dorsal lip to a novel location in the embryo at gastrula stage. That is, the dorsal lip appeared on the opposite side to gravity at the rotation of the egg. Above results were discussed with the informations obtained from other anuran and urodele species, and were interpreted in terms of regulating mechanisms for early embryogenesis.

  • Until now, there are no scientific studies for Dongkyung-i(DKI) dog, which is recently called as Deng-Kyun. This study is aimed to investigate the characteristics of DKI. According to visiting studies, DKI is an active, live and muscular dog. The dog is willing to announce the approach of strangers friendly. As the results of morphological studies, DKI is medium sized and the average weight is 22.6 kg. Its coat has mainly yellowish brown color and short hair. Morphologically, the dog showed vestigial tail and muscular and sturdy pelvic limbs. As the results of radiological studies, DKI is characterized as the absence of coccygeal vertebrae or the coccygeal agenesis. We concluded that DKI may be a Korean native canine breed characterized as short or non-tail dog. Also, we suggested that this characteristic dog is valuable to develop as a Korean native breed.
