  • This study was performed to determine the effects of Four seedling age classes ageon the characteristics of growth and nutrient uptake in Chamaecyparis obtusa container seedlings. Seedlings (1-1, 2-0, 2-1, and 2-2 seedlings) of C. obtusa grown in containers were harvested to measure specific leaf area, height (H)/root collar diameter (D) ratio, dry mass of aboveground (T)/root dry mass (R) ratio, and seedling quality index of seedlings. The specific leaf area was highest in 1-0 seedlings (30.48 cm2 g-1), whereas it decreased (from 28.62 cm2 g-1 to 23.59 cm2 g-1) with increasing seedling age. The H/D ratio increased with increasing seedling age (from 4.41 in 1-0 seedlings to 8.35 in 2-2 seedlings). The T/R ratio decreased as the seedling age increased (from 4.29 in the 1-0 seedling to 2.13 in the 2-1 seedling). The seedling quality index increased with increasing seedling age (from 0.10 for the 1-0 seedling to 3.06 for the 2-2 seedling). The carbon concentrations of seedling components (leaf, branches, stem, and roots) did not differ significantly with seedling age, whereas the nitrogen concentration of seedling components was the lowest in 2-1 seedlings, as no fertilizer was applied to discourage excessive growth of the seedlings. Phosphorus, potassium, and magnesium concentrations in 2-1 seedling components were not affected by the lack of fertilizer application. These results can be applied to determine the optimum morphological characteristics and nutrient management by seedling age in container- grown C. obtusa.

  • This experiment was carried out to investigation the growth differentiation between direct sowing and transplanting on P. ginseng cultivated on field and underwood. The results were as follows: In direct sowing treatment, emergence rate of P. ginseng cultivated on field and under conifer forest was above 80%, but it was only 40% at cultivated under broad-leaved forest. And survival rate was directly diminished about 10% every year. In transplanting treatment, survival rate was also diminished every year, it was slighter than that of direct sowing treatment. The growth amount of P. ginseng cultivated underwood was poor, compared to field culture, but there was no significant between conifer forest and broad-leaved forest. In transplanting treatment of 1 to 6 year-root seedling, survival rate of P. ginseng cultivated underwood was equal or slightly good compared to that of cultivated on field. Among seedling age, survival rate of elder seedling was lower than that of younger seedling. In P. ginseng cultivated underwood, the annual growth increment of 1 and 2 year-root seedling increased slowly and continually, whereas, that of 3 to 6 year-root seedling stopped or decreased slightly.

  • Pathogenicity of nine Rhizoctonia solani isolates of different anastomosis groups (AG) on seed and hypocotyls of red pepper, cucumber, Chinese cabbage and radish varied considerably from nonvirulent to highly virulent. Rhizoctonia solani AG 1 was highly virulent on the above four plant species. AG 2 type 1 was highly virulent on radish and Chinese cabbage, moderately virulent on red pepper, and AG 2 type 2 was avirulent or weakly virulent except red pepper. R. solani AG 5 was moderately virulent on hosts tested. In general, virulence of the R. solani isolates to a given host varied among anastomosis groups, but not within anastomosis groups. Anastomosis groups lacked host specificity. The pathogenicity was stronger in steam-sterilized soil than in non-sterilized field soil, if the inoculated plants were closely related with orginal host from which the pathogen was isolated. On the other hand, pathogen was more virulent in non-sterilized field soil than in steam-sterilized soil, if the inoculated ones were not closely related. Generally, contrary to other soil-brone plant pathogenic fungi, Rhizoctonia isolates tended to be more virulent in non-sterilized field soil than in the same soil which had been steamed. A potential danger of building up propagules of R. solani in southern horticultural area are discussed in terms of cropping system.

  • The objective of study was carried out to investigate the proper nutrient nitrogen concentration and irrigation period for increasing plant growth and flowering in Ardisia pusilla. Nutrient nitrogen concentrations were 120, 150, 180 and $210\;mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ and they were based on the Sonneveld solution. Irrigation periods were divided into ED (except dormancy) and TG (total growth) according to plant age. The results of plant age and irrigation period, growth of 1 year-old plant was promoted by nitrogen concentration above $150\;mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ regardless of irrigation period. And plant growth values of 2 years-old in TG treatments were higher than ED treatments, especially TG-180 treatment was best of all. The contents of total nitrogen of leaves after flowering were increased with nutrient nitrogen strength. And the contents of potassium, calcium, magnesium and phosphate slightly were decreased or were no significant differences. Plant growth and flowering decreased when nitrogen concentration was over $210\;mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$. Therefore, TG-150 and TG-180 were supposed to be appropriate treatment for plant growth and flowering of 1year-old plant and 2 years old plant, respectively.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the change of endosperm substance and seedling growth in rice seedlings for machine transplanting with use of two rice varieties, which Samgangbyeo (Indica${\times}$Japonica) and Dogjinbyeo (Japonica) were sown on May 8 with five levels of seeding density. 1. The total dry matter weight, leaf area, length of the longest root, number and length of new roots were negatively correlated with seeding density, and the plant height had the similar tendency to them from 20 days after sowing(DAS). 2. The rooting ability was negatively correlated with seeding density and decreased from 35 DAS in Dongjinbyeo. 3. The endosperm substance were exhausted at 25 to 30 DAS in Samgangbyeo and at 25 DAS in Dongjinbyeo. 4. The leaf area was more useful than the ratio of plant height to dry matter weight for judging the constitution of seedlings. 5. The reducing sugar contents in the endosperm were the greatest among parts of rice seedlings followed by leaf and root. The contents in leaf, root and endosperm reached maximal at 10 DAS, and varied with plant parts, seedling growth and varieties in different levels of seeding density. 6. The protein contents in leaf and root of rice seedlings became decreased with seedling growth., and were minimal values at 15 DAS. The content in endosperm was decreased soon after seeding, and minimal at 4 DAS with showing some fluctuation of protein content after then.

  • The study has been carried out for the development of an inoculation method in screening resistant varieties and/or lines to bacterial leaf blight of rice with special consideration on plant ages and inoculum concentrations. A higher incidence of the disease was found on younger plants than on the older ones when the plants were inoculated with the same concentration of inoculum by clipping method under the same circumstances. Applications of extremly high concentration of inoculum resulted the death of younger seedlings from all varieties within short period after inoculation, and the inoculum that was lower than optimum concentration failed in distinguishing varietal characteristics in regard of resistance. The proper inoculum size for the screening of resistance among the varieties and/or lines depended on the age of plants. The optimum concentration of inoculum for the plant age of 14, 37, 48 and 58days was $10^6,\;10^7,\;10^7-10^{-9}\;and\; 10^9 cells/ml.,$ respectively.

  • To seek for restoration method of Abies koreana forest with planting seedlings, Abies koreana seedlings(2, 3 and 5 year old) were planted by date(spring and summer) and surface treatment (coir-mat, coir-net and control) at Janggumok area in Hallasan. Survival rate and shoot growth of the seedlings were measured and compared by planting date, seedling age and surface treatments. For summer planting, survival rates of the seedlings are increased with increasing seedling ages, and those are not differed between surface treatments. For spring planting, survival rates of the seedlings are increased with decreasing seedling ages, and those are not differed between surface treatments. For summer planting, shoot growth of the seedlings are significantly differed between surface treatments. Shoot growth of the seedlings was the highest value 2.11mm at coir-matted plot, and the lowest value 1.49mm at control B)lot. Shoot growth of the seedlings are not differed between the seedling ages, but the highest shoot growth was 2.26mm at coir-matted and 3-year old plot. For spring planting, survival rates and shoot growth of the seedlings are not differed between seedling ages and surface treatments.

  • Through the laboratory and vinyl house experiments, the effects of inoculum density, plant age and temperature on the incidence of Phytophthora crown rot of pepper (Capsicum annum L.) were investigated. The propagule survival was greater in the natural soil than in autoclaved soil within first 2 weeks when the sporangial suspension of the pathogenic fungus was incorporated into soil, thereafter the survivability reduced rapidly. The propagule was not detectable in 35 days by means of Papavizas selective medium neither in natural nor in autoclaved soil. At least 5 sporangia per gram soil were required to induce crown rot for 30 days old pepper seedlings. Further increase in inoculum concentration above this threshold level resulted in higher disease incidence and shorter incubation period. When the same amount of inoculum was infested, higher disease incidence was observed for younger plants until 3 weeks after inoculation. On the other hand after 4 weeks this tendency was not extended any more. Younger plants were recognized as having shorter incubation period upon infection, however, the days from first symptom appearance to complete death were not significantly different among differently aged seedlings. Exposure of inoculated pepper seedlings to $25^{\circ}C$ resulted in highest infection rates and followed by those to $30^{\circ}C\;and\;20^{\circ}C$ but no disease was found at $15^{\circ}C\;and\;35^{\circ}C$ for 10 days. When the plants previously incubated at different temperature for 10 days were moved to $25^{\circ}C$ room temperature, prior exposure to $20^{\circ}C\;and\;30^{\circ}C$ brought continuous disease development. Even those plants preincubated at $15^{\circ}C$ were diseased up to 50%. But the prior exposure to $35^{\circ}C$ induced no symptom developed, indicating no seedlings infected at all.
