  • To select some salt tolerant pasture species for grassland establishment on the west coastal saline land in Korea, this work was carried out from March to October in 1976 with 5 pasture seeds mainly were introduced from Australia. On the soil salt content was 0.4%, all seeds germination were failure, but all species were survived on the 0.2% salt content land. The yield of forage were much better from Kikuyu grass and Pearl millet but poor from other species. The Meadow grass could be used for protect soil erosion by lot of tillers. By the result from this experiment, only Kikuyu grass and Pearl millet were possible to use for forage crops. But to continue this work, it is suggested to introduced more effective species such like Saltwater couch, Saltshore ryegrass, Puccinella, Salt bush, Blue buch, Samphire and so on.

  • The object of this experiment was to suggest the optimum N fertilization level in Kentucky bluegrass pasture fer turf'of school ground. The field trials were conducted from 2001 to 2003 at Chungnam National University in order to evaluate the dry matter yield and quality on the N levels(100, 150 and 200kg/ha). With increasing the N level, the average DM yield for 2 years in Kentucky bluegrass pasture significantly increased. The average total DM yields was 6,317, 8,495 and 10,361 kg/ha at N 100, 150 and 200 kg/ha level(p<0.05), respectively. CP content and DMD were significantly increased(p<0.05), whereas fibrous constituents were not detected obvious tendency, but CPDM and DDM yields were significantly increased with increasing the N levels for 2 years(p<0.05). Based on the results, considering the total DM yield and quality of herbages which incidentally produced from Kentucky bluegrass pasture in school ground, it can be suggested that the suitable application N level was 200 kg/ha.

  • This study was conducted to select the optimum seed mixture for beef cattle (Hanwoo) grazing in middle mountain area at 450m from sea level during 2 years from October 1, 1999. Seed mixtures were composed of four different treatment according to main species such as orchardgrass (T1), perennial ryegrass (T2), timothy (T3) and Italian ryegrass (T4). Grass composition rate of different seed mixtures was decreased mostly at first year of grazing, like 44.9% of orchardgrass in T1 plot, 27.6% of perennial ryegrass in T2 plot, 40.9% of timothy in T3 plot and 40.7% of Italian ryegrass in T4 plot, respectively. Main species in seed mixture were decreased in grazing pasture, but kentucky bluegrass and tall fescue were increased in all plots. Italian ryegrass in T4 plot was well grown in early grown stage and inhibited the growth of other grass species, and 44.2% of Italian ryegrass was maintained in second year in the grazing plot. Average dry matter yields of first you showed 6,673 kg/ha and second year was 10,177 kg/ha. Average TDN yields of different seed mixtures were 6,399 kg/ha in T1, 7,769 kg/ha in T2, 4,383 kg/ha in T3 and 7,146 kg/ha in T4 plot. Average herbage dry matter intakes by different seed mixtures during 2 years were 5,937 kg/ha in T1, 6,375 kg/ha in T2, 4,925 kg/ha in T3 and 6,456 kg/ha in T4. This result indicated that perennial ryegrass would recommended in main species of Hanwoo grazing pasture.

  • This experiment was conducted to introduce strip croppings fur decreasing the damage of the continuous com cultivation at the experimental field of Grassland and Forage Crops division, National Livestock Research Institute from 1999 to 2000. Introduced mps for strip cropping to the continuously com cultivated field were red clover (RC), alfalfa(AL), and mixture of grass md legume. Fall panicum(FP), which is one of warm season's weeds was focused on its emerged quantity in com field changed by the level of soil water content and degree of the continuous corn cultivation. The ranges of yearly gained forage fresh yields including weeds like mainly FP were 119.4 ${\~}$ 169.6 in the continuous cultivation with com and rye and 64.9 ${\~}$ 83.3 ton / ha in the corn mono-cropping. Meanwhile, the percentages of pure com in continuous com cultivation plot were only $31-38\%$. This was for the mainly emergence of FP in the continuously com cultivated field. The ranges of average fresh yield of emerging FP were 45.6${\~}$63.4 ton/ ha in the continuously com cultivated field which were over the ranges of yields of rye, 28.2 ${\~}$ 41.6 ton/ ha. The dry matter yields of red clover, alfalfa and mixture with grass and legume introduced for strip cropping were 10.2, 10.6 and 10.6 ton / ha, respectively and these were about the 1/4 average fresh com yield. After strip cropping of red clover, alfalfa and mixture with grass and legume, the yields of corn increased to 56, 82, 88 and 79 ton / ha, respectively and com yield was much better in the alfalfa strip cropping.

  • With a purpose of finding out the effects of magnesium and boron enriched organic-compound fertilizer application on the dry matter yield, yield components and changes in the botanical composition on the hilly pasture, a field experiment was arranged with five different treatments as a randomized block design and lasted from September, 1984 to the end of growing season in 1986. The results obtained are summarized as follows : 1. As a early plant growth and development, winter hardiness, growth vigour and coverage of grasses at the plots with organic-compound fertilizer application were better comparing to single dressing. 2. Average dry matter yields for two years were shown significantly high due to increasing amount of fertilizer. This trend was same both single and organic-compound fertilizer. And dry matter yields with organic-compound fertilizer application of low (8, 693.1 kg/ha) and conventional level (12, 758.7 kg/ha) were appeared to increase by 10 and 15% than those of single dressing of Low (7, 930.6 kg/ha) and conventional level (11, 122.6 kg/ha), respectively. But it was not significant difference. 3. Dry matter yield of grasses was significantly gained by increasing amount of fertilizer. The yield of legumes at the plot without fertilization was significant higher comparing to fertilizing plots, but it was not different between low and conventional dressing levels. However, at the plots with organic-compound fertilizer application the yields of grasses were a little more increased by 8-14%, and legumes were much more gained by 26-29% than those of the same species groups with single dressing, but it was not significant between the different kinds of fertilizer in the same fertilizing level. 4. At the grassland management, the rate of legumes tended to dominate at the plot without fertilization gradually. On the other hand, the botanical compositions and the rates of grasses were much better maintained at the plots with fertilization. But the rates of legumes with organic-compound fertilizer application tended to increase a little more than those of single dressing gradually.

  • Experiment was carried out to find the fertilizing effects of 8 different application rates of swine compost fermented with sawdust(SCS) including Chemical fertilizer(CF) on forage yield and soil chemical characteristics of mixed pastures sown in Sep. 1993 at National Livestock Research Institute, RDA., in Suwon during low years. It was arranged in a randomized complete block design with three replicates. Dry matter yield were shown at similar among treatments except Control and $50\%$ SCS of standard amount plot. In botanical composition, the legume and weeds percentages of each treatment were increased as advancing year. The final year's legume percentage were high in line with SCS fertilizing plots($39\%{\sim}43\%$), SCS + CF plots($30\%{\sim}41\%$) and CF plot($32\%$). In productions of TDN, NE and crude protein yield, SCS or SCS($75\%$) + CF($25\%$) were nearly same comparing those of CF, respectively. Phosphate, potassium, magnesium contents and K/(Ca + Mg) except calcium contents of those SCS fertilizing plots in plant were generally high with comparing CF. Those contents were proportional according to the fertilizing amount These result indicate the possibility to substitute chemical fertilizer for SCS($75\%$, 25ton/ha) + CF, $25\%$) as manure-N 210 kg/ha, but might be considered accumulation phosphate in the soil.

  • This study was carried out to determine the effect of seeding dates of Italian ryegrass interseeded into bermudagrass sod on the forage productivity and botanical composition of Italian ryegrass and bermudagrass. Experimental plot was located at 200 m altitude within Subtropical Animal Experiment Station, National Institute of Animal Science in Jeju from 2009 to 2010. Seeding date treatments of Italian ryegrass into bermudagrass sod were arranged in a randomized complete block design replicated three times. Italian ryegrass was drilled in row 20 cm apart after clipping the bermudagrass at a cutting height of 2~3 cm. Seeding time was on 15 September, 30 September and 15 October. The dry matter yield of Italian ryegrass was higher in 15 September seeding treatment, the dry matter yields of 30 September and 15 October seeding treatment were not different. The Italian ryegrass interseeded into bermudagrass sod didn't affect the dry matter yield in the summer harvests of bermudagrass, and the dry matter yield of bermudagrass showed the highest in August. In botanical composition, Italian ryegrass showed to reduced growth in early seedling stage after seeding by competition with bermudagrass, but Italian ryegrass was dominant to June increasing of temperature in spring next year and bermudagrass after Italian ryegrass harvests was dominant during summer season.

  • The southern type grasses announced for the test were the Bermudagrass cultivars (Giant, Cheyenne, Mohawk, Panchero Frio, Common and Tifton 85) and the Bahiagrass cultivars (TifQuik, Tifton 9), and the changes in the productivity and nutrient content were surveyed in Jeju area (450m altitude). The different cultivars were sowed by broadcasting or drill seeding method, and Tifton 85 was transplanted from sprigs. The fresh and dry matter yield showed varying significant differences for different cultivars (p<0.05). The fresh yields of Tifton 85, TifQuik and Tifton 9 were excellent, compared to the other cultivars, and for the dry matter yield, Tifton 85 and Tifton 9 were excellent when compared to the other cultivars. Crude protein content showed significant differences among different cultivars (p<0.05). Cheyenne, Mohawk, Panchero Frio, and Common showed differences in the crude protein content by sowing method and harvest time (p<0.05). The different cultivars showed differences in the crude fiber content (p<0.05), and Tifton 9 registered significantly high content and Mohawk and Tifton 85 showed significant crude fiber content by harvest time (p<0.05). According to these results, the southern type grass cultivars showed big differences in the regenerative capacity against damage from frost, productivity, and nutrient content, so they need to be chosen according to the purposes, and to increase their usage, their evaluation needs to be conducted at various altitudes.

  • This study was conducted from 2003 to 2005 at crop field of National Institute of Subtropical Agriculture, RDA, in Jeju. The treatment consisted of chemical fertilizer 100%(CF 100%, T1), cattle manure 100%(CM 100%, T2), CF 50%+CM 50%(T3), CF 25%+CM 75%(T4), CM 100%(1st yr.)+CF 100%(2nd yr,)+CM(3rd yr)(T5), CM 100%(1st yr.)+CF 100%(2nd yr.)+CF(3rd yr.)(T6). The highest substitution effect of chemical fertilizer for cattle manure indicated that the highest yield(Avg. 11,169 kg/ha) obtained from CM 100%(1 yr.)+CF 100%(2 yr.) treatment. The forage yield of CM 100%(1 yr.)+CF 100%(2 yr.) was 4% more than CM 100% application whereas was 3% less than CF 100% application. Changes of physical and chemical properties of soils for applications of CF 100% and CM 100% was clearly in cattle manure application. Especially, cattle manure application in pasture were superior to chemical fertilizer application with respect to organic matter(OM, %), total nitrogen(T-N, %), and avaliable phosphorous($P_2O_5$, %) contents of soils. In this present study, cattle manure application recorded slightly lower forage yields than CF 100% application but the combined use of cattle manure and chemical fertilizer was attribute to reduction of chemical fertilizer application rate as well as maintaining soil health on long-term basis.
