  • This study attempts feasibility analysis of cataloging outsourcing. The economic analysis model based on information economics categorizes the benefit into direct benefit and value linking. We measure direct benefit by cost savings and cost avoidance, value linking by the degree of improvement in cataloging quality The results show that there is no feasibility overall, because librarians spent more time to control the quality due to vendor's lack of professionalism, resulting little effect on cost savings. When cataloging outsourcing is forcibly used under the economically infeasible condition, it is impossible to achieve the basic purpose of operating cost savings and improvement of service function.

  • The bibliographic records have been built up following the Digital Library System (DLS) cataloging rules in the school libraries. But it is hard to use DLS cataloging rule as the standardization guidelines in building up the bibliographic records in school libraries because it is not the detailed cataloging rules, has inconsistency in its own rules, and disagrees with KCR4 rules. Therefore, this study is to suggest the new amendment for DLS cataloging rule to improve the bibliographic records quality and to produce the standardized bibliographic records. To grasp the problems of the DLS cataloging rules, DLS cataloging rule was analyzed with KCR4 rule and the interviews were conducted to the 9 school librarian that have experienced over 3 years. The result showed that it was needed to correct the terms to accord with KCR4, and to amend the DLS rule in each area.

  • Book recommendations in libraries can be used as a tool to help users with vague needs browse and select books. Therefore, libraries spend a lot of time and effort to introduce various materials to their users and recommend suitable books. Meanwhile, various organizations other than libraries also publish recommended reading lists, and these lists reflect the intentions of the entity that selects the recommended books. The purpose of this study is finding out how the recommended book lists of libraries differ from the recommended reading lists of non-library organizations. To achieve this, the study limited the scope to 'teenagers', who are the main target audience for book recommendations in many organizations, and compared the recommended book lists of libraries and non-library organizations in terms of (1) the selection criteria for recommended books, (2) the characteristics of recommended books, and (3) the way of providing recommended book lists. Through this analysis, the study identified the characteristics and limitations of library recommended book lists and discussed areas for improvement.

Additioansl qualities and skills which the catalogers in this environment will need are indentified. The review is done through the examination of research reports and results of numerous library surveys. The overall climate of change is toward a process of conver gent evolution between catalogers and public service librarians. The heads of technical services departments and several catalogers in eight Korean academic libraries including National Central Library are interviewed to find out the present development of automation and any effect on cataloging staff in terms of work and organizational structure. It is too early to have any such changing impact as the automation is still in its implementing stage. However, they see the future when professional catalogers are expected to serve in much extended role as the automation stages are moving ahead.
