  • This paper presents the results of a reduced-scale physical model investigation into the effect of drilling fluid with different mix designs for use in offshore bore hole collapse prevention. Compare the bentonite and Attapulgite use. Reduced-scale model tests were then carried out considering field procedures for cases with decomposed granitic soil with fines and a sand with various drilling fluids with different mix designs. The results were indicated that the addition of polymer to the bentonite based drilling fluid decreases the amount of injected drilling fluid and increases the final depth of excavation. Also revealed that the effect of polymer on the performance of drilling fluid is more pronounced in the decomposed granite soil with fines than sand. Practical implications of the findings from this study are discussed in detail.

  • Strength and deformation characteristics of oyster shell-sand mixtures were investigated to utilize waste oyster shell being treated as a waste material. Standard penetration test (SPT) is a common method to obtain in-situ strength in sand. However, in case of oyster shell-sand mixtures, there was no information between SPT N-value and internal friction angle of mixture soils. In this paper SPT experiments from several large scaled model chamber tests and large scaled direct shear tests were carried out with varying unit weight of oyster shell-sand mixtures. Appropriate correlations were in tile study observed among N-value, unit weight and internal friction angle, which make it possible to estimate in-situ strength from SPT and the coefficient of volume compressibility from the confined compression tests to compute the settlement of oyster shell-sand mixtures.

  • Calibration chamber tests were conducted on open -ended model piles driven into dried siliceous sands with different soil conditions in order to clarify the effect of soil conditions on plug capacity, The model pile used in the test series was devised so that the bearing capacity of an open -ended pile could be measured out into three components , outside shaft resistance. plug resistance and tip resistance. Under several assumption, the value of earth pressure coefficient in the soil plug is calculated. It is gradually reduced with increase in the longitudinal distance from the pile tip. At the bottom of soil plug, it tends to decrease with increase in the penetration depth and relative density, and to increase with the increase of ambient pressure. In comparison of measured and calculated plug capacities using the one -dimensional analysis, we note that API code and one -dimensional analysis combined with P suggested by Randolph et al. and O'Neill et al. result in great underestimation of the plug capacity. Therefore, based on the test results, an empirical equation was suggested to compute the earth pressured coefficient to be used in the calculation of plug capacity using the one -dimensional analysis. and it produces proper plug capacities for all soil conditions.

  • The soil nailing is one of the useful support-system in urban excavation because of the presence of other structures in the vicinity Since the soil nailing system was introduced, model experiments and theoretical studies have been performed to investigate behavior of soil nailed wall. However, there are few data in the case of multi-layered soil strata just like Seoul Metropolitan area in Korea. The feed back analyses are carried out using the measured wall displacement data for soil nailing construction sites with multi-layered strata in order to analyze the distance and the coefficients of extension zone of ground behind soil nailed wall. As a result, the distance of extension zone increased with increasing of the final excavation depth and the ratio of the distance to the final excavation depth was shown to be about 94% of the final excavation depth. Also, the coefficients of extension zone increased with enlargement of soil layer thickness and converged into constant value of 1.05. On the other hand, the maximum vertical displacements by the feed back analysis and Caspe's method were shown to be approximately 80%, 150~280% of the maximum horizontal displacement respectively.

  • The domestic, quantity of copper slag as a by-product at copper smelting process reaches 700,000 tons annually while its application is limited. Therefore, the secure disposal plan of copper slag is urgently required. For this reason, in this study, copper slag was used as a substitute for sand in Sand Compaction Pile that is one of the improvement methods of soft ground because the particle size distribution of copper slag ranges from 0.15mm to 5m(coarse state) and it maintains stable glassy state environmentally. The geotechnical characteristics of copper slag were evaluated through laboratory model tests and the field application of copper slag was compared with generally used sand by pilot tests. From these experimental results, copper slag's material characteristics, bearing capacity, settlement reduction and improvement effects of surrounding ground were found to be superior to generally used sand. The copper slag can be used as a substitute far sand in the Sand Compaction Pile method and as recycling material of industrial by-product with high econonical and environmental value when natural resources are being exhausted.

  • The purpose of this research is to identify the effectiveness of injection with soil conditions by injecting CaCO3(created by microorganism reaction), which was recreated with equipment in similar situ condition. To analyze our research, we made 2 cases of single-layer (SP, SW) in D 150mm ${\times}$ H 300mm. Layers were made by RC 70, 80, 85, 90, 95% of soil condition. We measured uniaxial compression strength with cone penetrometer and watched injection range by checking a bulb formation around the injection nozzle. As a result, the relative compaction(RC) in more 85% were not injected in SW, we could identify the effect of bio-grouting technology on ground in relative compaction(RC) of injection ratio and cementation range.

  • The evaluation of soundness of pile is very important for the safety of super structure. In this paper, the HWAW(Harmonic Wavelet Analysis of Wave) method which is developed to determine phase and group velocities of waves is applied to evaluate integrity of pile non-destructivly. The proposed method can evaluate a soundness of pile and pile end condition which is very important factor for pile behaviour. To verity the applicability of HWAW method in non-destructive test for pile, the numerical simulation test using ABAQUS was performed. And the model pile was made and the proposed non-destructive pile tests were applied to evaluate soundness and end boundary condition of model pile in the air and soil box. Through a numerical simulation and model tests, it is shown that the HWAW method has good potential of applying to the evaluation of pile integrity.

  • To simulate two-dimensional plane-strain conditions in the laboratory model test, the side frictional resistance between the soil and thick glass or plastic sheet of the soil container should be reduced as much as possible. However, in fact this side friction cannot be removed completely. In this paper, the ground model simulated as a multi-sized aluminium rod mixture was introduced to get rid of the side frictional resistance and applied to the laboratory shear box test. In addition, an application of the close range photogrammetric technique to the shear box test was validated. As a result, it was found that a mean value of dilation angle from the close range photogrammetry was close to the dilation angle defined by the curve of shear strain vs. volumetric strain.

  • Earth pressure due to gravity generally increases linearly with the depth, but the distribution of earth pressure due to surface load depends on the loading condition, the ground condition, and the boundary condition. In this study, the earth pressure on a rigid wall due to the vertical surface load was measured in experiments. Rigid wall was built in the model test box, and it was filled with homogeneous sandy ground (width 30 cm, height 88 cm, length 110 cm). Rigid wall was composed of 8 segments, which were tested on the two load cells. In the tests, we observed the distribution of the earth pressure on the rigid wall depending on the vertical surface load and it's location. According to the test results, the lateral earth pressure due to the vertical surface load showed its maximum value at a constant depth and decreased with the depth, to the negligible value at the critical depth. The critical depth and the depth at which lateral earth pressure reaches its maximum were not decided by the magnitude of the vertical surface load. They were dependant on the distance from the rigid wall.
