  • Leaf morphology was examined for Prunus species from Jeju Island. Analyzed were the leaf blade length, petiole length, width of blade, number of veins and angle of the base to the mid-vein as quantitative characters and the distribution of trichome, position of glandsand leaf features qualitative characters. A total of 25 OTU were phenetically analyzed by UPGMA. The resuling phenograms slightly differ from the currently recognized taxonomic system in two points. Prunus mume was clustered with P. padus and P. buergeriana. Prunu spendula and P. yedoensis were separated from the cluster of P. jaamasakura, P. speciosa, P. sargentii and P. jamasakura var. quelpaertensis. Except for the members of subgenus Cerasus, subgenera Padus (P. buergeriana and P. padus), Microcerasus (P. japonica) and Amygdalus were well defined. Some morphological characters of leaves such as the ratio of blade length to width, the length of blade to petiole, number of veins, the distance between the gland and base, the angle of base to mid-vein, and the distribution of trichome were useful as diagnostic features for Prunus from Jeju Island.

  • Taxonomic treatment and the identification key for 6 species and 4 varieties from the genus Asarum (Aristolochiaceae) in Korea were presented on the basis of the morphological analyses. Recently the taxonomy of the genus Asarum in Korea is controversial in the definition of species and the establishment of variation range. Our morphological studies supported that the species A. patens, A. misandrum and A. versicolor should be recognized as independent species by the unique morphological characters such as calyx lobes, stylar protuberance and leaf variegation. Second, A. sieboldii var. cornutum, A. koreanum, A. maculatum and A. sonunsanense, regarded as species or variety by different scholars, showed a close relationship with A. sieboldii by the similar calyx characters. Thus, new combinations, such as A. sieboldii for. cornutum, A. sieboldii for. koreanum, A. sieboldii for. maculatum and A. sieboldii for. sonunsanense, are proposed. And A. heterotropoides var. seoulense and A. heterotropoides var. mandshuricum also had a close relationship, thus, new combinations, A. mandshuricum for. seoulense, A. mandshuricum for. mandshuricum, are proposed. Furthermore, it is appropriate that A. heterotropoides var. heterotropoides, only distributed in Japan, is revised into A. heterotropoides as independent species by the unique character from the 2 varieties above. Consequently, the genus Asarum in Korea is classified into 3 species and 7 forma.

  • Fruit and seed morphological characteristics were investigated in 36 taxa of 20 genera of Korean Ranunculaceae. As a result, fruits were classified as the achene, berry, or follicle type. In the taxa with achene, the presence of trichomes and stoma on the surface of the fruit and a feature in which the endocarp distinctively develops into a one-layer sclereid were considered as useful characteristics. Moreover, in the taxa with follicles, the composition of the seed coat (bitegmic vs. unitegmic), the cell shape of the seed coat, the presence of trichomes, and the type of seed coat were useful for taxonomic characteristics in Korean Ranunculaceae. Based on the fruit and seed characteristics, Adonis is likely to be classified into Helleboroideae rather than Ranunculoideae, as it has bitegmic ovules. In addition, Enemion is similar to Eranthis in unitegmic ovule and the seed coat structure which has non-sclereid exotesta; therefore, it is reasonable to be placed in Helleboroideae. According to the results of this study, more in-depth research is needed regarding the taxonomic positions of Callianthemum and Actaea, which has the only berry fruit type.

  • Interspecific crosses between rapeseed (Brassica napus L.) and chinese cabbage (B. campestris var. pekinensis Makino) and turnip (B. rapa L.) were made in order to examine the cross possibility and morphological phenotype of $F_1$ hybrid. The growth of pollen tube of cross between rapeseed and chinese cabbage was more rapid than cross between rapeseed and turnip. Silique formation and seed setting in silique were relatively high in the cross between rapeseed and chinese cabbage. The percentage of silique set from interspecific cross between rapeseed and chinese cabbage was 90.6% and higher 23.3% than the percentage of silique from interspecific cross rapeseed and turnip. The average number of seed per silique obtained from the cross rapeseed and chinese cabbage, and rapeseed and turnip reached 15.5 and 11.6, respectively. The morphological phenotypes of $F_1$ hybrid plants obtained from seeds in the cross between rapeseed and chinese cabbage resembled rapeseed mainly, but leaf length and leaf width were increased. The size, shape and lobation of leaves of $F_1$ hybrid plants from interspecific cross between rapeseed and turnip were intermediated between their parent species, but color of leaves was dark-green.

  • 1. The hair cells on adaxial surface turned out to be penetration way of Gleosporium Thea sinensis in tea plant. 2. The most parts of Gleosporium Thea sinensis generated in tea plant were young leaves with first-fifth leaves from tip of shoot. 3. The proper temperature for spore germination on leaf is $25-27^{\circ}C$, soaked by water for 12 hours. 4. For prevention of Gleosporium Thea sinensis the drug-spay in tea plant would be the most effective when sprayed at this temperature range, and the control of Gleosporium Thea sinensis would be possible through selection of tea plant with few hairs. 5. The treatment of bordeaux mixture to prevent growth of conidiospore was 48.3% more effective than in control plot which were not sprayed. 6. The effect of sprayed bordeaux mixture decreased to about 28.5% after one week of spray.

  • 'Seoritae' is a very famous variety of black soybean for mixed cooking with rice in Korea. However, it has a couple of bad traits such as late flowering and maturity. To improve these characteristics, seeds of original 'Seoritae' were irradiated using a 250 Gy gamma ray in 1994. Some mutants were identified and finally a new soybean variety 'Josaengseori' was developed in 2005. This variety has a few distinguishable characteristics such as smaller grain size, early maturity and high yielding compared to the 'Seoritae'. The flowering period of 'Josaengseori' is 57 days after seeding (DAS), which is 10 days earlier than that of 'Seoritae' (67 DAS). The maturation period of 'Josaengseori' is 130 DAS, which is 34 days earlier than 'Seoritae' (164 DAS). And the total yield of the new variety with 179 kg/10a is 2.4 times higher than that of 'Seoritae' with 74 kg/10a. 100 grain weight of 'Josaengseori' is 32.8 g, which is 20% lower than that of 'Seoritae' with 40.1 g.

  • The trapping leaves of Drosera capture insects by secreting sticky mucilage from numerous glandular trichomes (GTs) that are developed on the leaf epidermis. The present study examines and compares the structural features of those trichomes in Drosera binata and D. pygmy with the use of light and electron microscopy. The study focuses primarily on the development and differentiation pattern of the GTs during growth. Upon examination, the upper and lower epidermis were readily distinguishable by the features of GTs in developing leaves. In particular, the GTs were dense in the upper epidermis and along the leaf margin. In D. binata, the capitate GTs with elongated stalk and sessile peltate GTs were found most commonly, whereas only capitate GTs with varying degrees of the stalk length were observed in D. pygmy. Up to ca. $2.2{\sim}3.4\;mm$ long capitate GTs were seen in the leaf margins of D. binata and ca. $3.7{\sim}4.2\;mm$ long GTs having racket-like head with adaxial hemispheric structures, otherwise known as tentacles, were noted in the leaf margin of D. pygmy. The peltate GTs were found to be distributed in the lower epidermis of D. binata. In both species, head cells were dense with cytoplasm containing high numbers of Golgi bodies, ER, mitochondria and small vesicles. Secretory materials accumulated within numerous small vacuoles, then fused together to form a single large vacuole, which serves as a secretory cavity. Flection movement of the marginal GTs and leaf blade GTs, and increased mucilage secretion from the head cells upon contact with prey during the capturing process are considered to be major factors in their active insectivorous mechanism. The findings of this study will be useful in comparisons to similar findings in other species that form adhesive trapping leaves, such as Drosophyllum or Pinguicula., further contributing a better understanding of the function and structure of the trapping leaves of carnivorous plants.
