  • In a closed square cavity filled with a liquid, a cooled the upper horizontal wall and a heated the lower horizontal wall, the flow isn't generated under the ground-based condition when Rayleigh number is lower than 1700. In such case the flow phenomena near an air bubble under a cooled horizontal wall were investigated. The temperature and the flow fields were studied by using the Thermo-sensitive Liquid-Crystal and the image processing. The qualitative analysis for the temperature and the flow fields were carried out by applying the image processing technique to the original data. Injecting bubble at the center point of upper cooled wall, the symmetry shape of two vortexes near an air bubble was observed. The bubble size increased, the size of velocity and the magnitude of velocity increased. In spite of elapsed time, a pair of two vortexes was the unique and steady-state flow in a square cavity and wasn't induce to the other flow in the surround region.

  • In RTM process, the content of microvoids can be critical due to the fact that the presence of microvoids degrades mechanical properties on the fabricated composite parts. The present paper proposes an experimental method of observation in void formation and transport. VARTM processes are performed under observation with a digital video camera and then the microvoid formation in the flow front and transport are videotaped and observed both in channels and tows. The obtained data are used in the mathematical model in order to determine the model constants. Experimental results and expected results from the mathematical model show a good agreement with each other.

  • A syringe pump or a device using high electric voltage has been used for controlling flows inside a LOC (lab-on-a-chip). Compared to LOC, however, these microfluidic devices are large and heavy that they are burdensome for a portable ${\mu}-TAS$ (micro total analysis system). In this study, a new flow control technique employing pressure regulators and pressure chambers was developed. This technique utilizes compressed air to control the micro-scale flow inside a LOC, instead of a mechanical actuator or an electric power supply. The pressure regulator controls the output air pressure by adjusting the variable resistor attached. We checked the feasibility of this system by measuring the flow rate inside a capillary tube of $100{\mu}m$ diameter in the Re numbers ranged from 0.5 to 50. In addition, the performance of this flow control system was compared with that of a conventional syringe pump. The developed flow control system was found to show superior performance, compared with the syringe pump. It maintains automatically the: air pressure inside a pressure chamber whether the flow inside the capillary tube is on or off. Since the flow rate is nearly proportional to the resistance, we can control flow in multiple microchannels precisely. However, the syringe pump shows large variation of flow rate when the fluid flow is blocked in the microchannel.

  • The rheological characteristics of highly concentrated polymer bonded explosive simulant were studied. Hydroxyl terminated polybutadiene (HTPB) and polyethylene plastomer (Exact) were used as binders. Sugar and Dechlorane particles whose physical properties are similar to research department explosive (RDX) were used as fillers. When HTPB was used, diethyl hexyl adipate (DEHA or DOA) was used as a plasticizer together for some cases. Highly concentrated suspensions were mixed in a batch melt mixer (Rheomixer 600, Haake) and rheological properties were measured by plate-plate and capillary rheometers. Wall slip phenomena, thixotropy with shear hysteresis, and flow instability were investigated as shear rate and amount of fillers changed.

  • This study was conducted to predict and evaluate the uncertainty of safety after closure of the second phase surface disposal facility of the Gyeongju intermediate and low level repository in Korea. In this study, four scenarios are developed considering both intact and degraded states of multi-layered covers and disposal containers; also, the fluid flow by a rainfall into the disposal facility is simulated. The rainfall conditions are implemented based on the monthly average data of the past 30 years (1985~2014); the simulation period is 300 years, the management period regulated by institutional provisions. As a result of the evaluation of the basic scenario, in which the integrity of both of the containers and the covers is maintained, it was confirmed that penetration of rainfall does not completely saturate the inside of the disposal facility. It is revealed that the multiple cover layers and concrete containers effectively play the role of barrier against the permeation of rainfall.

  • In 2017, Korea Institute of Geoscience and Mineral Resources (KIGAM) has excavated a trench at Yongjang-li in the city of Gyeongju to examine the evidence of fault movement related with the 2016 earthquake in unconsolidated sediments. In the trench profile, the author has observed the features of ongoing soil-forming processes and groundwater movement overlapped on the sedimentary layers. The soil formation was in its initial stage, and most of the original sedimentary layers could be observed. The color changes depending on the redox conditions and by the Mn/Fe oxide precipitation, however, were the most significant features obscuring sedimentary records. The dark Mn oxide precipitates formed at the groundwater levels often concealed the sedimentary unit boundaries. The groundwater levels varied depending on the particle sizes of the sedimentary layers contacting the groundwater, and the Mn oxide precipitates have formed at varying depths. The groundwater could move upward along the narrow pores in the fine-textured sedimentary layer more than a few meters showing the gray color indicating a reducing condition for iron.

  • Rheological properties of 5% starch suspension were investigated using a capillarity tube viscometer. Nonglutinous and glutinous rice starch suspensions at $30-60^{\circ}C$, and $30-55^{\circ}C$, respectively, had no yield stress and showed dilatant flow behavior in the absence or presence of phosphate. However, flow behavior of nonglutinuous starches at $65^{\circ}C$ and glutinous starch at $60^{\circ}C$ was pseudopalastic. Flow activation energies for rice starch suspensions were 0.88-1.45 kcal/mole at $30-50^{\circ}C$ and about 45-73 kcal/mole $60-65^{\circ}C$. Flow activation energy in the presence of phosphate was 90-182 kcal/mole at $60-65^{\circ}C$. Akibare starch had the highest activation energy, and glutinous starch the lowest.

  • This study is intend to improve flow pattern within evaporator, which is low quality and low mass flux, by installing narrow horizontal annular crevice so that enhance heat transfer coefficient. The motive, which made to study heat transfer enhancement by using narrow annular crevice, came from capillary phenomena and pumping force of generating vapor on refrigerant boiling. Tests were run about 5 models of turbulence promoter with CFC-12, in the range of evaporating temperature (15.deg. C), mass flux (50 to 100 kg/m$\^$2/s), heat flux (3.4 to 6.7 kW/m$\^$2/), quality (0.1 to O.5). It is observed that flow pattern within evaporator is changed closely to semi-annular flow or annular flow, of which refrigerant liquid is reached to the upper side of tube by using narrow annular crevice. When the narrow annular crevice is installed in the evaporator tube, local heat transfer coefficient is generally more improved than that of smooth tube. That fact is according to observed result of flow pattern. It is learned that narrow annular crevice has more efficiency at a low mass flux. At the TP-5, enhancement of heat transfer rate is about 170% compare to that of smooth tube on a low mass flux (50 kg/m$\^$2/s), and it is about 134% on a high mass flux (100 kg/M$\^$2/S), so that we know that it is on a very high condition.

  • In the presence of ${\mu}-tip$ embedded in a slot-die head for stripe coatings, there arises the capillary flow that limits an increase of the stripe density, which is required for the potential applications in organic light-emitting diode displays. With an attempt to suppress it, we have employed a computational fluid dynamics software and performed simulations by varying the ${\mu}-tip$ length and the contact angles of the head lip and ${\mu}-tip$. We have first demonstrated that such a capillary flow phenomenon (a spread of solution along the head lip) observed experimentally can be reproduced by the computational fluid dynamics software. Through simulations, we have found that stronger capillary flow is observed in the hydrophilic head lip with a smaller contact angle and it is suppressed effectively as the contact angle increases. When the contact angle of the head lip increases from $16^{\circ}$ to $130^{\circ}$, the distance a solution can reach decreases sharply from $256{\mu}m$ to $44{\mu}m$. With increasing contact angle of the ${\mu}-tip$, however, the solution flow along the ${\mu}-tip$ is disturbed and thus the capillary flow phenomenon becomes more severe. If the ${\mu}-tip$ is long, the capillary flow also appears strong due to an increase of flow resistance (electronic-hydraulic analogy). It can be suppressed by reducing the ${\mu}-tip$ length, but not as effectively as reducing the contact angle of the head lip.

  • This study reports a microfluidic approach to produce monodisperse hydrogel microparticles in a simple and highly efficient manner. Specifically, we produce double emulsion drops with a thin oil shell surrounding an aqueous prepolymer solution, which is solidified via UV-induced free radical polymerization. When they are dispersed in an aqueous solution, the oil shell is dewetted due to the absence of surfactants, resulting in production of highly uniform hydrogel microparticles (C.V.=1%). Results show that production of monodisperse hydrogel microparticles with controllable size and composition can be achieved with minimal use of oil unlike water-in-oil (w/o) single emulsion-based approach. Furthermore, in-depth study of flow patterns in microfluidic device using a phase diagram exhibits a crucial relationship among relative flow rates while providing windows of readily controllable parameters for reliable manufacturing of hydrogel microparticles.
