  • In this paper, the problem of electromagnetic transmission via slits in a cavity inside conducting screen of finite thickness is considered for the case that the TE(to the slit axis) polarized plane wave is incident on the slit in conducting screen. Using the method of moments the variations of the transmitted power through the slits are obtained and compared with those computed from an equivalent circuit constructed using an equivalent slit admittance. It is found that the effective slit width of a narrow slit, at resonance, becomes $1/{\pi}$ wavelengths independently of the actual slit width. The transmission resonance phenomena in the proposed geometry are explained in connection with the variations of an equivalent admittance of the slit in the cavity.

  • In this study, a stability analysis was conducted through finite element analysis (FEA) of a simplified model of a fire ladder truck by changing the ascending angle, turning angle, and boundary conditions between the outrigger and the ground. The results of the analysis showed that decreasing the angle of the ladder car increases the moment due to the ladder weight, decreasing the safety factor despite being under the same load conditions. In the case of a rotating radius, the stability was found to vary depending on the boundary conditions. A comparative analysis in the future with these results and the experimental values from the actual fire ladder truck may determine the most appropriate boundary conditions based on the analysis program. It is expected to predict the risk of damage and rollover by assessing the stability of aerial ladder vehicles under different conditions.

  • In spite of 6.8 magnitude and the neighborhood of the epicenter, the steel moment frame survived after Northridge earthquake without collapse or casualties. However, following investigation revealed that there were severe damages at the column-weld interface of welded flange-bolted web (WFBW) steel moment connection, which was believed to be economic and safe from earthquakes based on experience and past tests. In this paper, this unexpected brittle fracture of the steel moment connection is explored using linear elastic fracture mechanics and post-Northridge tests. A method to predict the brittle fracture strength of the steel moment connection is proposed. Using this method, the failure mode of the WFBW connection and reduced beam section (RBS) connection are presented.

  • Undesired vibratory motion of a simply supported plate is controlled with piezoelectric sensors and actuators. Appropriate dynamic equations of the sensor and actuator are derived and coupled with the dynamic equation of the plate for the construction of an active feedback vibration control system. Analytic solutions are obtained for amplitude response of the plate, reflecting the combined effect of external driving forces and piezoelectric control moments. Numerical examples are presented to illustrate the effectiveness of this approach for two types of external forces, i.e. a concentrated point load and a piezoelectric plate driver. Calculation results show that the sensors and actuators can be efficient tools to mitigate the sensitivity of the structure to external sources of vibration. The method investigated in this work is applicable to arbitrary external loading conditions and control algorithms.

  • The variation of systematic bias errors in the wind tunnel testing has been studied. A Design of Experiments(DOE) approach to an experimental study of fuselage drag and stability characteristics of a helicopter configuration was applied. When forces and moments measured in one time block differ significantly from measurements made in another time block under assumption that sample observations can be expected to yield same results within permissible measuring errors. The practical implication of this paper is that the systematic error can not be assumed not to exist. The those error reduction could be achieved through the process of randomization, blocking, and replication of the data points.

  • This paper descrives the method to analyzed the free vibratioin of supported composite cylindrical shells with a longitudinal, interior rectangular plate. To obtain the free vibration characteristics before the combination of two structures, the energy principle based on the classical plate theory and Love's thin shell theory is adopted. The frequency equation of the combined system is formulated using the receptance method. When the line load and moment applied along the joint are assumed as the the Dirac delta and sinusolidal function, the continuity conditions at the joint of the plate and shell are proven to be satisfied. The effects on the combined shell frequencies of the length-no-radius ratios and radius-to-thickness ratios of the shell, fiber orientation angles and orthotropic modulus ratios of the composite are also examined.

  • A constant hanger is a device for supporting pipes in plants. It supplies a constant force to a supporting pipe even if the pipe moves because of thermal expansion. In this paper, we propose a method for designing the contour of a cam for a constant hanger. It has been shown that the contour of a cam must satisfy the geometrical relation of the cam, the force balance equation for the load tube, the relation between the side spring compression and the cam rotation angle, and the moment balance equation for the cam. A calculation procedure to solve these equations simultaneously is proposed, and a constant hanger is designed successfully.

  • This study presents the nonlinear responses of a hinged-clamped beam under broadband random excitation. By using Galerkin's method the governing equation is reduced to a system or nonautonomous nonlinear ordinary differential equations. The Fokker-Planck equation is used to generate a general first-order differential equation in the joint moments of response coordinates. Gaussian and non-Gaussian closure schemes are used to close the infinite coupled moment equations. The closed equations are then solved for response statistics in terms of system and excitation parameters. The case of two mode interaction is considered in order to compare it with the case of three mode interaction. Monte Carlo simulation is used for numerical verification.

  • The longitudinal reinforcement ratio for the performance-based design of columns was studied. Unlike the existing design codes using uniform minimum reinforcement ratio and effective stiffness for all columns, the longitudinal reinforcement ratio of columns was defined as the function of various design parameters. To evaluate the minimum reinforcement ratio, two conditions were considered: 1) prevention of passive yielding of compression re-bars due to the creep and shrinkage of concrete under sustained service loads; and 2) ultimate flexural strength greater than the cracking moment capacity to maintain the ductility of columns for earthquake design. In addition, the effective flexural stiffness of columns for structural analysis was determined according to the longitudinal reinforcement ratio. The design method addressing the three criteria was proposed. The proposed method was applied to a design example.

  • In this paper, E-polarized electromagnetic scattering by a conducting strip grating with 2 dielectric layers is analyzed to calculate the geometrical reflected and transmitted power by applying the Fourier-Galerkin moment mothed. The induced current density is expanded in a Fourier series using a simple exponential func- tion, and we applied the boundary conditions to the electromagnetic fields at the boundary planes. The sca- ttered electromagnetic fields are expanded in a series of Floquet mode functions. To examine the accuracy of the present method, the geometrically reflected and transmitted power are evaluated and compared with those of the existing papers, and then the numerical results are found in good agreement with those of the existing paper.
