The objective of the research stated herein is to observe the actual responses of a low-rise nonseismic moment-resisting reinforced concrete frame subjected to varied levels of earthquake ground motions. First, the reduction scale for the model was determined as 1 : 5 considering the capacity of the shaking table to be used and the model was manufactured according to the similitude law. This model was, then, subjected to the shaking table motions simulating Taft N21E component earthquake ground motions, whose peak ground accelations (PGAs) were modified to 0.12g, 0.2g, 0.3g, and 0.4g. The lateral accelerations and displacements at each story and local deformations at the critical reginos of the structure were measured. The base shear was measured by using self-made load cells. Before and after each earthquake simulation test, free vibration tests were performed to find the change in the natural period and damping ratio of the model. The test data on the global and local behaviors are interpreted. The model showed the linear elastic behavior under the Taft N21E motion with the PGA if 0.12g, which represents the design earthquake in Korea. The maximum base shear was 1.8tf, approximately 4.7 times the design base shear. The model revealed fairly good resistance to the higher level of earthquake simulation tests. The main components of its resistance to the high level of earthquakes appeared to be 1) the high overstrength, 2) the elongation of the fundamental period, and 3) the minor energy dissipation by inelastic deformations. The drifts of the model under these tests were approximately within the allowable limit.
This paper presents a case study of an enhanced geothermal system(EGS) demonstration project conducted in $Gro{\ss}$$Sch{\ddot{o}}nebeck$, Northerm Germany, focusing on hydraulic stimulation. The project was conducted with doublet system in sandstone and volcanic formations at 4 - 4.4 km depth. Under normal faulting to strike-slip faulting stress regime, hydraulic stimulations were conducted at injection and production wells by massive waterfrac and gel-proppant fracturing. Injectivity index increased from $0.97m^3/(hr^*MPa)$ to $7.5m^3/(hr^*MPa)$ and productivity index increased from $2.4m^3/(hr^*MPa)$ to $10.1m^3/(hr^*MPa)$ by a series of hydraulic stimulations at both wells. After circulation tests through injection and production wells, however, productivity index decreased from $8.9m^3/(hr^*MPa)$ to $0.6m^3/(hr^*MPa)$ in two years. Slip tendency analysis for the stimulation in volcanic layer estimated the required pressure for shear slip and its preferred orientations and it showed reasonable match with actual stimulation results. Through the microseismicity observation for the stimulation of volcanic formation, only 80 seismic events with its moment magnitudes in -1.8<$M_W$<-1.0 were observed, which are unexpectedly low for EGS hydraulic stimulation.
The method of direct seeding on flooded paddy surface in rice is known to be the most labor saving cultural practice in rice. However, this method has a problem in practical use such as severe lodging occurring at the reproductive growth stage. The objectives of this study were observated degree of field lodging and variation of lodging-related characteristics with different seeding dates. The number of seedlings per m$^2$ were from 91 to 144 plants, and seedling ratios were from ranged from 61.7% to 91.8%. Days from seeding to flowering were shortened from 5 to 15 days by the later seeding dates. Heading dates of Ilpumbyeo, Seoanbyeo, Daecheongbyeo and Donjinbyeo on June 9 showed slightly elapsed on the critical stable heading time from, August 28 to 29. The culm length was effective in longer clum varieties than semidwarf varieties. The degree field lodging (degree of lodging: 0~9< 9 : complete lodging) in Obongbyeo and S101 with semidwarf varieties were 0.17, whereas 1.25 in Dongjinbyeo with long culm. The lodging resistant varieties and later seeding dates shortened the length of fibrous in the clum, and thickened fibrous in the clum, respectively. Obongbyeo and Sl0l showed stronger resistance to field lodging. The lodging resistant varieties, Obongbyeo and Sl0l, showed lower values of lodging index from 1.03 to 1.15 than those of lodging susceptible varieties, Daecheongbyeo and Palgongbyeo ranged from 1.42 to 1.70. Bending moment with leaf sheath were greater in lodging resistant varieties (Obongbyeo and Sl0l),1510.0~1930.4g.cm, than those in the lodging susceptible varieties (Daecheongbyeo and Palgongbyeo), 1127.2~1287.6g.cm.

The roll damping problem in the design of ships and offshore structures remains a challenge to many researchers due to the fluid viscosity and nonlinearity of the phenomenon itself. In this paper, the study on viscous roll damping of a circular cylinder was carried out using forced oscillations. The roll moment generated by forced oscillation using a torque sensor was measured for each forced oscillation period and compared with the empirical formula. Although the magnitude of the measured torque from the shear force was relatively small, the results were qualitatively similar to those obtained from the empirical formula, and showed good agreement with the quantitative results in some oscillation periods. In addition, the flow around the circular cylinder wall was observed closely through the PIV measurements. Owing to the fluid viscosity, a boundary layer was formed near the wall of the circular cylinder, and a minute wave was generated by periodical forced oscillations at the free surface through the PIV measurement. In this study, the suitability of the empirical formula for the roll moment caused by viscous roll damping was verified by model tests. The wave making phenomenon due to the fluid viscosity around the wall of a circular cylinder was testified by PIV measurements.
Background: Confirm the stability of intervertebral disc sustaining each fused lumbar spine cases, comparing vertical compression, A-P shear force and rotational moment on intervertebral disc of instrumented lumbar spine with simple vertical compression load and follower load using finite element analysis. Materials and Methods: We analyze the stability of intervertebral disc L4-5 supporting fused lumbar spine segments. After performing finite element modelling about L1-L5 lumbar vertebral column and L1-L4 each fusion level pedicle screw system for fused lumbar spine fine element model. Intervertebral discs with complex structure and mechanical properties was modeled using spring element that compensate stiffness and tube-to-tube contact element was employed to give follower load. Performing geometrical non-linear analysis. Results: The differences of intervertebral disc L4-5 behavior under the follower compression load in comparision with vertical compression load are as follows. Conclusion: As a result of finite element interpretation of instrumented lumbar spine, the stability of L4-5 sustaining fused lumbar segment, the long level fused lumbar spine observed hing stability under follower load. This research method can be the basis tool of effects prediction for instrumentation, a invention of a more precious finite element interpretation model which consider the role of muscle around the spine is loaded.
In this paper, we propose a novel algorithm for hand gesture recognition. The hand detection method is based on human skin color, and we use the boundary energy information to locate the hand region accurately, then the moment method will be employed to locate the hand palm center. Hand gesture recognition can be separated into 2 step: firstly, the hand posture recognition: we employ the parallel NNs to deal with problem of hand posture recognition, pattern of a hand posture can be extracted by utilize the fitting ellipses method, which separates the detected hand region by 12 ellipses and calculates the white pixels rate in ellipse line. the pattern will be input to the NNs with 12 input nodes, the NNs contains 4 output nodes, each output node out a value within 0~1, the posture is then represented by composed of the 4 output codes. Secondly, the hand gesture tracking and recognition: we employed the Kalman filter to predict the position information of gesture to create the position sequence, distance relationship between positions will be used to confirm the gesture. The simulation have been performed on Windows XP to evaluate the efficiency of the algorithm, for recognizing the hand posture, we used 300 training images to train the recognizing machine and used 200 images to test the machine, the correct number is up to 194. And for testing the hand tracking recognition part, we make 1200 times gesture (each gesture 400 times), the total correct number is 1002 times. These results shows that the proposed gesture recognition algorithm can achieve an endurable job for detecting the hand and its' gesture.
The purpose of this study is to elucidate the mechanical characteristics of lower extremity joint movements at different walking speeds in obese people and suggest the very suitable exercise for obese person's own body weight and basic data for clinical application leading to medical treatment of obesity. This experimental subjects are all males between the ages of 20 and 30, who are classified into two groups according to Body Mass Index(BMI): one group is 15 people with normal body weight and the other 15 obese people. Walking speed is analysed at 3 different speeds ($1.5^m/s$, $1.8^m/s$, $2.1^m/s$) which is increased by $0.3^m/s$ from the standard speed of $1.5^m/s$. We calculated joint moments of lower extremity during stance phase through video recording and platform force measurement.Two-way ANOVA(Analysis of Variance, Mix) is applied to get the difference of moments according to walking speeds between normal and obese groups. Pearson's Correlation Analysis is applied to look into correlation between walking speeds and joint moments in both groups. Significance level of each experiment is set as ${\alpha}=.05$. As walking speed increases maximum ankle plantar flexion moment in the stance phase is smaller in obese group than in normal group, which is suggestive of weak toe push-off during terminal stance in obese group, and the highest maximum ankle plantar flexion moment in obese group during the middle speed walking($1.8^m/s.$). Maximum ankle dorsal flexion moment in obese group is relatively higher than in normal group and this is regarded as a kind of compensatory mechanism to decrease the impact on ankle when heel contacts the floor. Maximum knee flexion and extension moments are both higher in normal group with an increase tendency proportional to walking speed and maximum hip flexion and extension moments higher in obese group. In summary, maximum ankle plantar flexion moment between groups(p<.025), maximum knee moment not in flexion but in extension(p<.001) within each group according to increasing walking speed, and maximum hip flexion and extension moment(p<.001 and p<.004, respectively according to increasing walking speed are statistically significant but knee and hip moments between groups are not. Pearson correlation are different: high correlation coefficients in maximum knee flexion and extension moments, in maximum hip extension moment but not hip flexion, and in maximum ankle dorsal flexion moment but not ankle plantar flexion, in each group. We suspect that equilibrium imbalance develops when the subject increases walking speed and the time is around which he takes his foot off the floor.

In order to consider statistical properties of probability variables used in the structural analysis the conventional approach using the safety factor based on past experience usually estimated the safety of a structure Also the real structures could only be analyzed with the error in estimation of loads material characters and the dimensions of the members. But the errors should be considered systematically in the structural analysis Safety of structure could not precisely be appraised by the traditional structural design concept Recently new aproach based on the probability concept has been applied to the assessment of structural safety using the reliability concept Thus the computer program by the Probabilitstic FEM is developed by incorporating the probabilistic concept into the conventional FEM method. This paper estimated for the reliability of a plane stress structure by Advanced First-Order Second Moment method using von Mises, Tresca and Mohr-Coulomb failure criterions. Verification of the reliability index and failure probability of attained by the Monte Carlo Simulation method with the von Mises criterion were same as PFEM, but the Monte Carlo Simulation were very time-consuming. The variance of member thickness and load could influence the reliability and failure probability most sensitively among the design variables from the results of the parameter analysis. The proper failure criterion according to characteristic of materials must be used for safe design.
The purpose of this study was to explore high school teacher's and students' perceptions of learning difficulties of the ‘chemical bond' unit of the Chemistry II in the 7th national curriculum. The participants in this study were consisted of a teacher and his students(85) from the Chemistry II classrooms: they all answered to the questionnaire, and then some students and the teacher were interviewed individually. The results showed that there were big differences between the teacher's and his students' perceptions of 1) the most difficult unit for understanding; 2) concepts they learned; and 3) the most difficult concept for understanding in the classroom. Students thought that electro-negativity unit was the most difficult to understand while teacher thought molecular structure unit was the hardest unit to teach. And teacher taught all 32 subjects of chemical bond unit to students, but some students could not remember they learned all of them. Most difficult parts for students to understand were ‘Coulomb force' and ‘dipole moment', while the most difficult part for the teacher to teach was ‘the conceptual difference between atomic bond and intermolecular force'. The reasons caused the students' learning difficulties were analyzed and discussed based on the interview data, and then further study was presented.
Lightweight Foamed Soil (LWFS) is a useful material for underground pipe backfill because of reusability of excavated soil and no compaction effect. In this research, a pilot test is carried out and monitoring results are analyzed to investigate behaviors of a flexible pipe, when LWFS is applied as a backfill material. Simultaneously, they are compared with another test case which is backfilled with Saemangeum dredged soil. As a result, the vertical earth pressure of the case backfilled with LWFS slurry presents that decreases as much as 25.6% in comparison with dredged soil and it is only within 10% after solidification. In case backfilled with dredged soil, the horizontal earth pressure is more than 3.6 times of the case used by LWFS and the vertical and horizontal deformation is more than 3.2 and 2.6 times of the case, respectively. It presents excellent effects on earth pressure and deformation reduction of LWFS. The stresses measured at the upper side of the pipe generally present compressive aspects in case backfilled with dredged soil. However, they present tensile aspects in case of LWFS. It is because of negative moment occurred at the center of the pipe due to the buoyancy from LWFS slurry. Conclusively, LWFS using Saemangeum dredged soil is very excellent material to use near the area in comparison with the dredged soil. However, the countermeasure to prevent the buoyancy is required.
