  • There are two main software in COMS ground station at the normal mode operation - stationkeeping and wheel off-loading. In this paper, ground software validation test for wheel off-loading is summarized and described. The wheel off-loading was performed the design change from E3000 heritage and analyzed. The wheel off-loading of ground software has two part; one is wheel off-loading management for parameters change at the thruster set switching time and the other is wheel off-loading set-point being sent to satellite for the reference momentum.

A Study on High Agile Satellite Maneuver through Sequential Activation of Control Moment Gyros and Reaction Wheels (제어모멘트자이로와 반작용휠의 순차적 사용을 통한 위성 고기동 연구)

  • We assume that two control moment gyros are installed for space qualification in a satellite with four reaction wheels, and study the high agile maneuver method. Using high torque control moment gyros, we reduce the satellite's attitude error. After that, we activate reaction wheels to control remaining attitude error. This proposed method can avoid singularity problem of control moment gyros, and do not require gimbals' angle to calculate torque command. Through numerical simulations, we show that our method's agile performance is similar to previous method and reduce the reaction wheels' required momentum.

  • This paper considers a fault tolerant control problem for a spacecraft using wheels which are momentum exchanging devices. The control of a satellite with only two healthy wheels has been studied and its result has been presented. Two different configurations have been considered. When the yaw rate cannot be controlled directly by any control input, the desired yaw rate can be obtained by using the roll rate as a pseudo control. As a result, all three angular speeds have been stabilized, and two attitude angles including pitch and yaw have been controlled to converge to the desired values.

  • Now, on developing COMS(Communication, Ocean and Meteorological Satellite) has solar panel on the south panel only. Therefore, the wheel off-loading has to be performed periodically to reduce a induced momentum energy by a asymmetric solar panel. One of two East/West station keeping maneuver to correct simultaneously longitude and eccentricity, orbit corrections may be performed during one of the two wheel off-loading manoeuvres per day to get enough observation time for meteorological and ocean sensor. In this paper, we applied a linearized orbit maneuver equation to acquire maneuver time and delta-V. Nonlinear simulation for the station keeping is performed and compared with general station keeping strategy for fuel reduction.

  • CMG(Control Momentum Gyro) is a control device being used for spacecraft attitude control constructing relatively large amount of torque compared to conventional body-fixed reaction wheels. The CMG produces gyroscopic control torque by continuously varying the angular momentum vector direction with respect to the spacecraft body. The VSCMG(Variable Speed Control Momentum Gyro) has favorable advantages with variable speed to lead to better control authority as well as singularity avoidance capability. Attitude dynamics with a VSCMG mounted on a two-axis gimbal system are derived in this study. The dynamic equation may be considered as an extension of the single-axis counterpart. Also, a feedback control law design is addressed in conjunction with the dynamic equations of motion.

  • This paper describes the design and performance verification of a pitch momentum bias control system being built by students at the Space System Research Laboratory(SSRL). HAUSAT-2 ADCS(Attitude Determination and Control of Subsystem) op-elation mode is divided into two parts, initial mode and on-orbit mode. This paper describes design of the HAUSAT-2 performance of attitude control results using pitch momentum bias control method in initial mode and on-orbit mode and momentum dumping method.

  • In this paper, roll/yaw attitude control of spacecraft using a double gimbaled wheel is discussed with two feedback controllers designed. One is a PD controller with no phase difference between roll and yaw control input. The other is a PD controller with a phase lag compensator about the yaw control input. The phase lag compensator is designed as a first order system and a lag parameter is designed for the yaw angle control. There are two case simulations for each controller ; constant disturbance torques and initial errors of nutation at motion. We obtain the results through simulations that steady-state error and rising time of yaw angle are determined by the compensator. Simulation parameters used in this study are the values of KOREASAT F1.

  • Raising the speed of the momentum wheel in the CMG increases the unintended force and torque caused by mass imbalance. This unintended force and torque should be minimized to get the better quality of satellite SAR image because they lead to the vibration of the output image. This paper shows the works on compensating the static imbalance and couple mass imbalance in the CMG wheel. First, the force and torque at the center of mass generated by the mass imbalance were predicted through M&S analysis. Second, the force and torque were estimated similarly through the M&S analysis when the measurement point was moved from the rotation center. Third, the measurement configuration for the force and torque by the mass imbalance was described. Fourth, the change of the force and torque by adding the specified mass to the momentum wheel was observed after comparing the measurements with the results of the M&S. And finally, the effect of the compensation was analyzed by comparing the force and torque before and after the correction while 24Nm class CMG was running in the standby mode.

  • In these days, demand for agile spacecraft is gradually increasing, due to the fact that agile spacecraft can improve mission capability. In this paper, an attitude control logic based on reaction wheels that can enhance agility of spacecraft is proposed. Three methods are suggested, and all three or part of them can be integrated to the existing attitude control system. First, a feedforward/feedback controller is introduced, and its pros and cons are provided, compared to the conventional feedback controller. Second, an attitude command generation method that fully utilizes torque/momentum capacities of reaction wheels is proposed. Third, a torque (current) control mode for internal wheel control is introduced. Numerical results verify that the settling time can be significantly reduced by employing the feedforward/feedback control method, especially for large angle maneuver.

Development of a Labyrinth Seal for a Momentum Wheel (모멘텀 휠용 라비린스실 개발)

  • Labyrinth seal is most common way to protect the bearings installed in Reaction wheel. In spite of wide applications, no such research was found about the sealing utility of the Labyrinth seal in the condition of vacuum and high temperature. In this research, we tried to verify the utility of Labyrinth seal. Numerical analysis had been executed to predict the benefit of the Labyrinth seal and also experiments were performed to verify the utilization. Two Bearings were installed at the vacuum chamber, one was assembled with Labyrinth seal and the other was stand alone. After executing the vacuum test, it was found to be the stand alone bearing had lost more weight than the one that was assembled with the labyrinth seal. In this result, it is verified that the Labyrinth seal has useful function to preserve the lubricant that affects to the life-cycle of the Bearing.
