  • A gravity core (RS14-C2) was collected at site RS14-C2 in the continental slope to the east of Pennell-Isellin Bank of the Ross Sea (Antarctica) during PNRA XXIX (Rosslope II Project) Expedition. In order to trace the sediment source, magnetic susceptibility (MS), sand fraction, and clay mineral compositions were analyzed, and AMS $^{14}C$ ages were dated. Core sediments consist mostly of hemipelagic sandy clay or silty clay including ice-rafted debris (IRD). AMS $^{14}C$ age of core-top indicates the modern and Holocene sediments. Based on AMS $^{14}C$ dating, sediment color, MS and sand fraction, core sediments are divided into interglacial and glacial intervals. The interglacial brown sediments are characterized by low MS and sand fraction, whereas the glacial gray sediments are characterized by high MS and sand fraction. Among clay mineral compositions of core sediments, illite is highest (61.8~76.7%), and chlorite (15.7~21.3%), kaolinite (3.6~15.4%), and smectite (0.9~5.1%) are in decreasing order, and these compositions are also divided into the interglacial and glacial/deglacial intervals. During the glacial period, the high content of illite and chlorite indicate sediment supply from the bedrocks of Transantarctic Mountains under the Ross Ice Sheet. In contrast, because of decreasing supply of illite and chlorite by the glacial retreat, smectite and kaolinite contents increased relatively during the interglacial period. During the interglacial period, smectite may be transported additionally by the northeastward flowing surface current from the coast of Victoria Land in the western Ross Sea. Kaolinite may be also supplied to the continental slope by the Antarctic Slope Current from the kaolin-rich metasedimentary rock outcropped on the Edward VII Peninsula.

  • In Gomso Bay, on the west coast of Korea, the surface sediments sampled in 1991 and 2006 were analysed to identify the long-term variations of tidal flat sediments. Silt and clay contents have decreased in the bay-mouth tidal flats whereas sand and clay contents have decreased on the inner-bay and bay-head tidal flats over the last 15 year period. In particular, the clay contents of the tidal flats in 2006 were relatively low when compared to those of both tidal flats adjacent to other semi-enclosed bays and those of the tidal flats in 1991. The variations of textural compositions in the tidal flat sediments have led to changes of the sedimentary facies. It indicates that the changes must have been made by the changes of hydrodynamic conditions impacted by human activities, such as the construction of sea-walls, land reclamation, structures of farms constructed compactly near the low water line, and the Saemangeum dyke constructed in the northern part of the area where this research was conducted.

  • The contamination of a suite of heavy metals were evaluated in water and sediments of urban stream, Tancheon down the stream. Tancheon is a urban stream which goes all the way across the urban area where various pollution sources are present. The sixteen study sites from seven different areas were designated down the stream. The heavy metal levels of the streams were detected in the order of Zn>Cu>Ni>Pb>Cd>Cr>Sb. There was a difference in the relative order of the concentration ranking in lake sediments. There is a trend that the heavy metal levels are higher at the sites where the construction causes inflow of soil particles to stream. Toxicity tests using pore-water in sediments were conducted for samples collected in some study sites, and pore-water in one site was proven to be toxic to Japanes medaka (Oryzias latipes). The reason may be the fecal pollution rather than heavy metal effect. Strong odor was detected in the sediment whose pore-water samples showed ecotoxicity. We did not observed the increasing concentration of heavy metals down to stream since the soil texture varied in the stream area of our study. Further study is needed to find quantitative relations between the level of contamination and its eco-effect.

  • Channel topography, sediment properties, channel landscapes and characteristics of land covers in Naeseongcheon and Wicheon River consisting of granites and sedimentary rocks, respectively, are compared and analyzed. Due to the differences of bedrocks, soils and characteristics of land covers in the basins, Wicheon River with the slow flow speed shows the larger variations in river stage than Naeseongcheon River. While Naeseongcheon River fed by the granite sediments throughout granular disintegration hs tthe regular grain size properties with coarse sand in the most of river, Wicheon River fed by sedimentary rocks indicates the dramatic decertses of grain size lower-ward. Naeseongcheon River with channel interferences such as sand-sized sediment transughoations, dredges, and aggregate collections is analyzed as poorer vegetation covers than Wicheon River due to the dramatic changes in channel surfaces.

  • This research is aimed to investigate the relationship of the effective wind velocity and the morphological change in coastal dune at Sindu-ri in Korea. Sediment flux was estimated by the measurement of elevation change along eight transects deployed in the study area from July 1999 to July 2000. The results of this study indicated that. first. based on the occurrence of morphological change and winds effective for sand movement. two distinct seasons were identified: a season of deposition and that of erosion. During the depositional season, spanning from November to April, effective winds were dominant and sand accumulation occurred mainly in foredunes and sequentially in dune plains. During the erosional season, from May through October, volume change was small and erosion or sand loss occurred mostly at the dunefoot of foredunes. Secondly, the research revealed that the sediment budget of Sindu coastal dune turned out to be surplus on the whole, but there are some regional differences. Deficit budgets were observed partly in secondary dunes. The utmost northern part of Sindu coastal dune was provided with abundant sand, whereas the central and northern parts were poorly supplied.

  • size data of 1,044 surface sediments from Korean shelf area were compiled and reexamined. Size distribution curves of the sediments are unimodal (31% of the total number), bimodal (54%), or multimodal 915%), Size curves of the sediments and modal subpopulations of the mixed sediments show resemblance to normal curve in shape. The modal mean value shows systematic change along a direction inside the Recent mud belts of the southeastern Yellow Sea and west of Korea Strait. It was found that the areas covered by unimodal sand are minimal value areas of heavy metal and suspended sediment-concentration in the southeastern Yellow Sea and northern East China transport processes during Recent time. It was also found that the mode analysis is useful method to extract information from sediment size data.

  • This study is an analysis on gravel and sand of sand-gravel bar that stretches variously in the Duchon stream basin, which is one of Hong-Cheon River(a well-developed sand-gravel bar in upstream river)'s upper stream basin. The purpose of this study was to understand the characteristic of the stream's topographic development that variously occur in the small basin by comparing the differences between the aspects of development and the sediment of sand-gravel bar in each section and by examining the transition of sediments moving from upstream to downstream. Through the analysis on the roundness and flatness of gravel, we observed an irregular trend following the increase in supply of granite gravel and gneiss gravel as we traveled downstream. As for the aspect of change in sand's grain size, the overall ratio of medium-coarse sand was very high, but the results showed no big difference in the change following the inflow of stream from the main stream section to the gneiss and granite zone.

  • The Hamo and Hyeopjae beaches in the western part of Jeju Island were studied in terms of seasonal variations of surface sediment and beach profile. Seasonal drift direction of the beach sands also was investigated. The Hamo beach of $7.3^{\circ}-10.8^{\circ}$ steep is composed of medium sand containing volcanic clasts and shell fragments. The Hyeopjae beach of $2.8^{\circ}-6.5^{\circ}$ steep is composed of coarse shelly sand. Hamo beach deformation is probably caused by the jetties constructed in the western part of the beach. In the Hyeopjae beach, surface sands were drifted into the dune side by the northwestern stormy wind during winter season.

  • This study investigated the sedimentary environment changes in the Baramarae beach of Anmyeondo through spatio-temporal surface sediment analysis. In the winter season 2009, surface sediments were classified into 7 sedimentary facies such as gravel, sand, gravelly sand, gravelly muddy sand, muddy sand, silty sand, and sandy silt. Time-series analysis of average grain size from 2002 to 2009 revealed that the average grain size of sediments became finer and sorting was much worse. On the contrary, during the same period, the grain size became coarsening-trend and sorting was much better in beach area. These different grain size patterns resulted from the different change characteristics of beach and tidal flats. The southwestern beach area was connected to the open sea and thus fine sediments were removed by the environments with relatively high-energy. The sedimentation of fine sediments in the bay resulted from the tidal current action and the reduction of energy by the topographic effects. Fine sediments in the outer part of southwestern tidal flats could be explained such that the Seomot isle blocked ocean waves and as a result, low-energy environments accelerated sedimentations of fine sediments.
