  • Programs of energy balance, mode analysis and transient analysis for a liquid rocket engine have been introduced. The analysis methods have been verified through comparison between the present results, and the results of the other program and experimental data. An energy balance analysis is used for engine system design at the early development phase. A mode analysis is used for decision of engine operation conditions and test conditions, and studying deviation of an engine performance. A transient analysis can predict a propellant flow rate, thrust, impulse at transient phase. It is essential to establish a startup/shut down sequence. The analysis programs will be used to develop the engines of KSLV-II.

  • We have fabricated and characterized optical delay lines for optical coherence tomography, which is composed of cylindrical PZT(piezoelectric transducer) and single mode optical fiber. The polarization mode dispersion from the optical delay lines was compensated by the polarization controllers. By applying the duplex optical delay line, we minimized the thermal drift due to optical delay lines and obtained the scan range of 2 times that of a single optical delay line. The OCT system showed resolution of $18.6\pm0.5{\mu}m$, scanning range of 1.68mm, and scanning speed of 360.4mm/s.

  • Second harmonic generation(SHG) by guided phase matching is observed in waveguide structure using the anomalous dispersion of a poled polymer. The second harmonic TM$_{0}$ guided mode could be generated from the fundamental TM$_{0}$ guided mode and then the second harmonic power was higher than any other phase matchable mode because the overlap integral between the fundamental and the second harmonic wave was the largest in the theoretical analysis. Near UV SHG(370 nm) was obtained from the fundamental wavelength of Ti-sapphire laser(740 nm).

  • The effect of gain dispersion on the self-pulsation (SP) characteristics due to the mode beating of two modes emitted in a multisection DFB laser composed of two complex-coupled DFB sections and a phase control section is investigated. When the peak wavelength, ${\lambda}_{p}$, of the gain spectrum of the DFB section is positioned in the center of the lasing wavelengths or the Bragg wavelengths of the two DFB sections, the maximum SP frequencies are higher and the modulation index has better characteristics compared to those cases for ${\lambda}_{p}$ fixed at the lasing wavelength or Bragg wavelength of one DFB section, when the difference between the Bragg wavelengths of the two DFB sections, ${\Dalta}{\lambda}_{B}$, is varied. When ${\lambda}_{p}$ is positioned in the renter of the Bragg wavelengths of the two DFB sections, the maximum SP frequency is higher and of the modulation index has better characteristics compared to those of the case for ${\lambda}_{p}$ positioned in the center of the lasing wavelengths of the two DFB sections.

  • The effects of dispersion coefficient of dispersion compensating fiber (DCF) and residual dispersion per span (RDPS) on in the dispersion managed optical links for compensating the distorted 960 Gbps wavelength division multiplexd (WDM) signals due to group velocity dispersion (GVD) and optical nonlinear effects of single mode fiber (SMF) are investigated. It is confirmed that optimal net residual dispersion (NRD), which greatly affects compensating for optical signals, should be induced under the large launch power condition, irrelevant on the considered dispersion coefficient of DCF and RDPS. It is also confirmed that system performances are greatly improved by selecting the very small RDPS and very large dispersion coefficient of DCF.

  • This paper proposes an optical transmission link design method based on an optimum compensation scheme using dispersion compensating fiber (DCF), so that high-speed long-distance optical transmission would be possible over the conventional standard single mode fiber (SMF) link. The proposed design method provides the maximized transmission distances according to the signal speeds, where the amplifier spacing and repeater spacing are optimized wit respect to self-phase modulation(SPM) due to fiber nonlinearity and amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) noises caused by optical amplifies. It is also shown that there exists an optimum input signal power range balancing the effects of ASE noise and SPM for the given amplifier spacing and repeater spacing.
