MICROBIAL CHANGE IN DENTAL PLAQUE AFTER CHLORHEXIDINE VARNISH TREATMENT TO ORTHODONTIC PATIENTS (교정환자에 있어 chlorhexidine varnish 처치 전후의 치태내 균주변화에 관한 연구)

  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of chlorhexidine varnish treatment in the prevention of dental caries in orthodontic patients by observing microbial change in dental plaque after varnish treatment. The sample consisted of 26 patients who were classified into an experimental group and a control group, 13 patients each. The experimental group was treated with chlorhexidine varnish once a week for 4 weeks. The control group was treated with placebo varnish using the same procedure, The microbial change was analysed by indirect immunofluorescene technique before treatment and 4 weeks, 8 weeks after treatment. The results were as follows. 1. Streptococcus mutans were strongly suppressed until 8 weeks after chlorhexidine varnish treatment(p<0.01). 2 The proportion of Streptococcus sanguis increased temporarily 4 weeks after chlorhexidine varnish treatment(p<0.05), decreased to original level after 8 weeks. 3. Streptococcus mitts, Actinomyces viscosus, Actinomyces naeslundii did not show significant change after chlorhexidine varnish treatment.

Passive transfer of immunity against Cryptosporidium infection in neonatal mice using monoclonal antibodies (단클론항체를 이용한 생쥐에서의 크립토스포리디움 감염의 수동면역)

  • Monoclonal antibodies (Ub) against merozoites and sporozoites of the protozoan parasite Cryptosporidium pcnjum were examined for potential modulation of cryptosporidial infections in vivo by daily oral Ub administration to oocyst-inoculated neonatal mice. Monoclonal-treated neonatal mice were sacrified four and eight days post infection (pi) . Differences in infection rates were observed among the treatment groups at the p < 0.05 level. Suckling mice treated daily with orally administered mixtures of mAbs( ascitic fluids) showed significantly reduced parasite loads compared to control mice at flour and eight days pi, while suckling mice receiving mAb Cmg-3 alone showed signiacant differences only at 4 days Pi., suggesting that passive transfer of mAb may be of value in controlling cryptosporidial infections.

  • Background: The greatest threats to the lives of cancer patients consist of both complications due to metastasis and the recurrence of original cancer. However, the existing forms of chemotherapy do not prevent these adverse events adequately because they suppress the patients' immune systems. A new methodology is required. Aim: To provide further validation for cancer immunotherapy (involving the use of traditional oriental herbal medicine). Method: Related articles, in both Korean and English were reviewed. Results: Cancer immunotherapy involving the use of traditional oriental herbal medicine can create inhospitable conditions for cancer cells and strengthen patients' immunological functioning. These effects are a demonstration of the principles of "strengthening healthy qi (扶正)" and "eliminating pathogens (祛邪)". As a result, immunotherapy protects against metastasis and original cancer recurrence by preventing the growth of cancer cells. This is very similar to the concept of a cancer dormancy therapy. Conclusion: It is strongly urged by the authors that more advanced studies be carried out on this promising therapy in the future in order to improve patients' quality of life and increase their survival time.

  • 최근에 고령화 사회에 접어들면서 건강하게 활동하며 수명을 다하는 것이 중요한 연구과제가 되고 있다. 이 때문에 영양, 운동, 스트레스, 환경 등과 관련하여 암, 당뇨병, 고혈압, 비만, 동맥경화 등 생활습관병의 극복이 사회문제가 되고 있는 실정이다. 지금까지 고려인삼의 대표적인 동물실험 및 임상학적 연구결과를 종합하여 보면 성인의 난치성 만성질환에 대해서 치료제보다는 질병을 예방하고 회복촉진에 보다 큰 효과 있음을 확인할 수 있다. 이는 인삼이 식품과 의약품의 중간에 위치한 식품의약품(Nutraceutical)의 용도로 활용할 수 있음을 시사한다. 현재까지 인삼제품에 표시되는 기능성의 내용은 약 3,000여편 이상의 약리효능에 관련된 논문이 발표되었다 하더라도 "피로회복, 면역력 증진, 혈소판 응집 억제를 통한 혈액흐름에 도움이 됩니다"이며 이외의 기능성 표시는 현재로서 원칙적으로 불가한 것으로 되어 있다. 그러나 시험물질의 규격화 및 임상시험의 검토기준을 만족시키는 과학적 자료제출에 의한 개별 평가 후 표시내용의 확대가 가능하다. 고려인삼의 다양한 성분 중 ginsenoside는 주요 약효성분으로 인정을 받고 있으며 현재 품질관리의 지표성분으로 활용되고 있다. 이러한 개별 ginsenoside의 약리작용을 보면 서로 유사 또는 상반된 효과를 보여주는 성분들이 공존하고 있어 인삼의 다양한 약리효과와 일맥상통하는 것으로 보고되고 있다. 아울러, ginsenoside는 인삼의 부위 별로 현격한 차이를 보여주기 때문에 소재의 규격화는 매우 중요하다고 판단된다. 따라서, 인삼제품 개발의 가장 중요한 조건은 의약품에 가까운 기능성식품으로 세계적인 제품을 만들기 위해서는 표준화가 선행되어야 한다. 이와 같은 조건을 잘 충족시키는 제품이 스위스 "파마톤의 진사나(백삼추출물, G115)" 제품으로 생각할 수 있다. 따라서, 고려인삼의 수출시장 확대 및 세계적인 제품을 위해서는 진사나에 필적할 수 있는 새로운 홍삼의 표준화된 추출물을 도출하는 것이 무엇보다 급선무라 생각한다. 아울러 고려인삼의 특장점 발굴을 위한 표준화 된 추출분획물, 활성성분 및 효능과 연계한 새로운 고부가가치 창출제품(식품/의약품)개발에 주력해야 할 것이다.

Anti-asthmatic activities of Cypress oil in a mouse model of allergic asthma (마우스 모델을 이용한 사이프러스 오일의 알러지성 천식 억제 효과)

  • This study was aimed to evaluate the effects of Cypress oil(CS) on anti-asthmatic activities in a mouse model of allergic asthma. Using an Ovalbumin-induced allergic asthma mouse model, 0.3% of CS was administered to experimental group using a nebulizer for 3 weeks on a basis of 3 times per week and 30min each time. The degree of airway hypersensitivity, the number of eosinophil in white blood cells, the number of immune cells and the change of cytokine in lung tissue were evaluated. The degree of airway hypersensitivity, the number of eosinophil, IL-5 and IL-13 levels in lung tissue, IgE in serum, the number of CCR3, CD3, CD4 cells were significantly decreased in experimental group treated with CS. These results suggested that CS may have a positive effects on Th2 cytokine and eosinophils which are major factors of asthma responses. Therefore CS might be of therapeutic value in treating asthma.

  • This study was carried out to get a industrial information about a possibility of IgY antibody production, antimicrobial activity and properties of IgY antibody in egg yolk. The residual antibody activities of IgY were 91.5% after heating for 30min at 6$0^{\circ}C$. At the same time. these activities, were 73.2% after heating 15min at $65^{\circ}C$ and decreased vapidly at 7$0^{\circ}C$ and little antibody activity was left after heating for 15min at 8$0^{\circ}C$. When the prepared IgY was incubated at various pH ranges from 7 to 2 for 5hr at 37$^{\circ}C$., the antibody activity was stable from pH 7 to 4 and remained to 69.8% at pH 3.

  • Corilagin (CRN) isolated from Euphorbia helioscopia as rheumatoid arthritis drug. CRN was medicated to the abdominal cavity of collagen induced arthritis (CIA) mice that was an animal model for rheumatoid arthritis and its effects on incidence and arthritis index were studied. The results were as folllows; It was exhibited that medicating corilagin inhibited the infiltration of activated T lymphocytes into an inflammatory joint. The production of IgG and IgM that were RF (rheumatoid factor) and inflammatory cytokine, IL-6 and $TNF-{\alpha}$were reduced. After measuring $IFN-{\gamma}$and IL-4, it was found that it was shifted into Th2 immune response as increasing in IL-4. After liver function test, studies on liver poisoning of AST/ALT should be continued.

  • Wegener's granulomatosis is a disease with an unknown etiology that is characterized by necrotizing granulomatous vasculitis involving the upper and lower respiratory tract and the kidneys. The typical pulmonary findings are bilaterally involved multiple variable sized nodules. We report a case of Wegener's granulomatosis that presented as a single lung mass. A male patient presented with a nasal obstruction, arthralgia, cough, and intermittent dyspnea. The chest radiograph showed a mass, approximately 4.5 cm in diameter, in the right lower lobe. Lung cancer or tuberculosis was initially considered. However, the clinical, laboratory and pathological findings of the mass indicated Wegener's granulomatosis. The patient was administered prednisolone and cyclophosphamide, and improved temporarily. Unfortunately, the immunocompromised patient expired as a result of respiratory failure with pneumonia.

  • Focal segmental glomerulosclerosis(FSGS) has been detected in approximately 10% of cases of Idiopathic nephrotic syndrome in children, and exhibits a poor response to initial steroid therapy, as well as a higher rate of progression to chronic renal failure and relapse after kidney transplantation. We describe a case of an eleven year-old boy with steroid-resistant FSGS who exhibited a response to a second trial of cyclosporin h(CsA) therapy. At the age of 26 months, this patient was diagnosed with steroid-resistant FSGS. For 9 years, he had undergone a gauntlet of therapies to induce remission; oral steroids, cyclophosphamide, methylprednisolone(mehyIPd) pulse therapy, CsA, and ibuprofen therapy. Although these therapies failed to induce remission, the patient's renal function remained In the normal range during the nine years of treatment. At the age of ten years, the patient's proteinuria decreased, and complete remission was attained with a second administration of CsA, coupled with a low dose of oral steroids. This patient continues to receive CsA without relapse. Therefore, our major concern involves the possibility of relapse after the discontinuation of CsA therapy Our findings in this case suggest that, in cases of refractory FSGS, if renal insufficiency does not emerge, aggressive therapy for the amelioration of proteinuria should be continuously pursued.

Effects of Perilla frutescens L. on anti-oxidant and anti-inflammation activity (자소엽 및 자소자의 염증조절 활성 비교)

  • It is recognized that Perilla frutescens L. (PfL) are useful for various diseases, including allergic disorders. To evaluate whether the PfL extract have potential in alleviating oxidant and inflammatory process, some in vitro antioxidant assays and in vivo DNFB-induced atopic assay were investigated. Extracts of PfL have potent anti-oxidant activity by DPPH or FRAP assay. By treatment of high temperature / high pressure extraction process of PfL seed, the activity was increased. Using a mouse animal model, we found that PfL extract reduces ear thickness and epithelial thickening and infiltration of immune cells inhibition. Collectively, the present results suggest that PfL can be used as an antioxidant and/or anti-inflammatory biomaterial, that should be proved to evaluate on mechanistic study and development of functional food.
