Music Retrieval Using the Geometric Hashing Technique (기하학적 해싱 기법을 이용한 음악 검색)

  • In this paper, we present a music retrieval system that compares the geometric structure of a melody specified by a user with those in a music database. The system finds matches between a query melody and melodies in the database by analyzing both structural and contextual features. The retrieval method is based on the geometric hashing algorithm which consists of two steps; the preprocessing step and the recognition step. During the preprocessing step, we divide a melody into several fragments and analyze the pitch and duration of each note of the fragments to find a structural feature. To find a contextual feature, we find a main chord for each fragment. During the recognition step, we divide the query melody specified by a user into several fragments and search through all fragments in the database that are structurally and contextually similar to the melody. A vote is cast for each of the fragments and the music whose total votes are the maximum is the music that contains a matching melody against the query melody. Using our approach, we can find similar melodies in a music database quickly. We can also apply the method to detect plagiarism in music.

Extracting Melodies from Piano Solo Music Based on its Characteristics (음악의 특성에 따른 피아노 솔로 음악으로 부터의 멜로디 추출)

  • The recent growth of a digital music market induces increasing demands for music searching and recommendation services. In order to improve the performance of music-based application services, the process of extracting melodies from polyphonic music is essential. In this paper, we propose a method to extract melodies from piano solo music which is highly polyphonic and has a wide pitch range. We categorize piano music into three classes taking into account the characteristics of music, and extract melodies according to each class. The performance evaluation for the implemented system showed that our method works successfully on a variety of piano solo music.

Tonal Characteristics Based on Intonation Pattern of the Korean Emotion Words (감정단어 발화 시 억양 패턴을 반영한 멜로디 특성)

  • This study investigated the tonal characteristics in Korean emotion words by analyzing the pitch patterns transformed from word utterance. Participants were 30 women, ages 19-23. Each participant was instructed to talk about their emotional experiences using 4-syllable target words. A total of 180 utterances were analyzed in terms of the frequency of each syllable using the Praat. The data were transformed into meantones based on the semi-tone scale. When emotion words were used in the middle of a sentence, the pitch pattern was transformed to A3-A3-G3-G3 for '즐거워서(joyful)', C4-D4-B3-A3 for '행복해서(happy)', G3-A3-G3-G3 for '억울해서(resentful)', A3-A3-G3-A3 for '불안해서(anxious)', and C4-C4-A3-G3 for '침울해서(frustrated)'. When the emotion words were used at the end of a sentence, the pitch pattern was transformed to G4-G4-F4-F4 for '즐거워요(joyful)', D4-D4-A3-G3 for '행복해요(happy)', G3-G3-G3-A3 and F3-G3-E3-D3 for '억울해요(resentful)', A3-G3-F3-F3 for '불안해요(anxious)', and A3-A3-F3-F3 for '침울해요(frustrated)'. These results indicate the differences in pitch patterns depending on the conveyed emotions and the position of words in a sentence. This study presents the baseline data on the tonal characteristics of emotion words, thereby suggesting how pitch patterns could be utilized when creating a melody during songwriting for emotional expression.

Extracting Predominant Melody from Polyphonic Music using Harmonic Structure (하모닉 구조를 이용한 다성 음악의 주요 멜로디 검출)

  • In this paper, we propose a method for extracting predominant melody of polyphonic music based on harmonic structure. Since polyphonic music contains multiple sound sources, the process of melody detection consists of extraction of multiple fundamental frequencies and determination of predominant melody using those fundamental frequencies. Harmonic structure is an important feature parameter of monophonic signal that has spectral peaks at the integer multiples of its fundamental frequency. We extract all fundamental frequency candidates contained in the polyphonic signal by verifying the required condition of harmonic structure. Then, we combine those harmonic peaks corresponding to each extracted fundamental frequency and assign a rank to each after calculating its harmonic average energy. We finally run pitch tracking based on the rank of extracted fundamental frequency and continuity of fundamental frequency, and determine the predominant melody. We measure the performance of proposed method using ADC 2004 DB and 100 Korean pop songs in terms of MIREX 2005 evaluation metrics, and pitch accuracy of 90.42% is obtained.

Music Identification Using Pitch Histogram and MFCC-VQ Dynamic Pattern (피치 히스토그램과 MFCC-VQ 동적 패턴을 사용한 음악 검색)

  • This paper presents a new music identification method using probabilistic and dynamic characteristics of melody. The propo3ed method uses pitch and MFCC parameters as feature vectors for the characteristics of music notes and represents melody pattern by pitch histogram and temporal sequence of codeword indices. We also propose a new pattern matching method for the hybrid method. We have tested the proposed algorithm in small (drama OST) and broad (1.005 popular songs) search spaces. The experimental results on search areas of OST and 1,005 popular songs showed better performance of the proposed method over conventional methods. We achieved the performance improvement of average $9.9\%$ and $10.2\%$ in error reduction rate on each search area.

  • 아코디온은 키보드와 건반 그리고 공기주머니로 구성 되어 있는 악기로써 건반 악기의 특성과 화음을 위한 키보드 코드의 손가락 운영 기법이 요구되는 악기의 특성을 갖는다. 따라서, 연주를 자습하거나 독자적인 교습을 위한 연주법에 대한 알고리즘이 요구된다. 본 연구에서는 아코디온의 효율적인 연주를 위하여 손가락 연주의 알고리즘을 패트리 넷으로 표현하여 화음과 멜로디의 관계성을 표현하였다. 또한 사례를 들어 모델링을 검증하였다.

A Study of Popular Music Melody Idioms (대중음악 멜로디 관용구의 판단요소 -Someday 사건 대법원 판례를 중심으로-)

  • Plagiarism concerns in the melody of popular music are on the rise. Despite these concerns, standards and methods for addressing these issues are lacking. This study is significant in the fact that it is the first case in the media which started as a controversy on plagiarism of popular music and even progressed to Supreme Court ruling. The first and second trial courts declared the existence of infringement of copyright by recognizing that the music in question was substantially alike as a result of comparing and reviewing the melody, rhythm, and harmony. However, the Supreme Court came to a different verdict on the infringement of musical work by reversing and remanding the case to the Seoul High Court. The Supreme Court indicated that even though the music presented in the first trial is a creative work entirely protected under the Copyright Act, expression without creativity is an area that is not protected under the law. Based on this case, this study seeks to compare and analyze the essential characteristics of melody in the judgment of infringement of copyrights in popular music, and factors related to the judgment of practical similarity and the judgment of idioms that are the criteria for judging infringement of musical work.

Chord-based stepwise Korean Trot music generation technique using RNN-GAN (RNN-GAN을 이용한 코드 기반의 단계적 트로트 음악 생성 기법)

  • This paper proposes a music generation technique that automatically generates trot music using a Generative Adversarial Network (GAN) model composed of a Recurrent Neural Network (RNN). The proposed method uses a method of creating a chord as a skeleton of the music, creating a melody and bass in stages based on the chord progression made, and attaching it to the corresponding chord to complete the structured piece. Also, a new chorus chord progression is created from the verse chord progression by applying the characteristics of a trot song that repeats the structure divided into an individual section, such as intro, verse, and chorus. And it extends the length of the created trot. The quality of the generated music was specified using subjective evaluation and objective evaluation methods. It was confirmed that the generated music has similar characteristics to the existing trot.

  • 내용기반 질의법 (Content-based Query Method)은 멀티미디어 데이터가 가지고 있는 고유의 특성을 검색의 단서로 하여 질의하는 방법이다. 따라서 이러한 내용 기반의 디지털 오디오 콘텐츠 시스템은 유저가 데이터베이스 내에서 찾고자 하는 오디오 관련 정보의 질의 방법으로써 그 노래의 멜로디 정보를 입력함으로써 이루어지게 된다. 본 논문에서는 가수명이나 노래 제목, 혹은 가사의 일부 등 기존의 음악 검색에 필수적인 텍스트 정보인 키워드를 전혀 모르는 상태에서, 휴대폰이나 컴퓨터의 마이크를 통해 자신이 기억하고 있는 노래의 일부분을 흥얼거리는 것만으로, 각종 오디오 정보를 손쉽게 찾아주는 내용기반 질의법을 이용한 디지털오디오 검색시스템 (MuseFinder)을 소개한다. 또한 실제 유저의 편이성을 고려한 GUI에 기초한 고성능의 검색시스템을 구현하는데 있어 주요 이슈와 고려사항에 대해서 살펴보고 그 해결 방법을 제안한다.

  • With the growth of Chinese manufacturing industry and strengthening of manufacturing industry in advanced countries, the competitiveness of Korean manufacturing industry has become weak. Accordingly, it is time when energy for new growth is required very strongly. This research is the basic research to construct a cognitive and emotional information system to support sound design in manufacturing industry, and aims to develop AUI (Auditory User Interface) guideline. To fulfill research aims, this research conducted interviews to persons belonging to the manufacturing industry, and analyzed contexts and major characteristics related with AUI design. In addition, this research conducted survey on 269 persons on user preference on representative function of products. By analyzing survey data, this research examined the most suitable melody method for each sound, and difference in user preference between men and women. Based on beep sound, it performed analysis focusing on the number of sounds, melody types, and code. It also extracted AUI guidelines usable when users of the product into male and female. This research has significance in the sense that it built the basic guide data which can support AUI design in manufacturing industry.
