  • Films of methylcellulose(MC), chitosan and their blends were prepared using water and acid solution as a solvent. The transition behavior and miscibility of polymers and their blends were characterized by dynamic mechanical analysis(DMA) and thermogravimetric analysis(TGA). The DMA analysis of PEG400/MC blends has shown that PEG400 was compatible with MC and was effective plasticizer since the curves of $tan{\delta}$ against temperature exhibited single peak, corresponding to single glass transition temperature, which were displaced to lower values with increasing PEG400 content. Results of DMA analysis and TGA analysis of MC/chitosan blends indicate that there are some miscibility between MC and chitosan in the blends, attributed to the similarities between two polysaccharides and interactions of two polymers in the blends. The inclusion of PEG400 in the blends increase the miscibility between two components in the blends.

  • Water soluble hydroxyalkyl methycellulose ethers are used in a variety of applications incluing building industry as a supplementary agent used for incresing adhesives, water retention capacity, workability and viscosity modify. Water retention capacity(WRC) is the capability to contain water in the ploymer chain under condition of being mixed with cement. In general, the WRC is affected by the viscosity, the adding amount, the particle size, the rate of dissolving and the amount of substituted chemical in cellulose ethers. In the other words, WRC is increased as higher the viscosity, more adding amount, finer the particle size and longer the dissolving time of cellulose ethers. This thesis investigated each factor that effect the WRC, particularly the relation between degree of substitution(DS), molar of substitution(MS) and WRC. It is observed that WRC is not nearly affected by DS of cellulose ethers, but is changes proportionally as MS increases in the narrow range(0.10~2.25)

  • Integrating 3D printing into architecture is gaining attention because it allows construction of construction structures without formwork. Among them, 3D printing construction materials must have high flow performance and at the same time ensure the performance that does not collapse during lamination. Therefore, in this study, we tried to determine the fluidity and lamination properties of mortar formulations, and set the thickener incorporation ratio as the formulation parameters. As a result of this experiment, it was confirmed that the lamination performance was secured from the thickening agent mixing rate of 1.5%.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the effect of the strengthening treatment of methyl cellulose (MC) on properties and aging characteristics of the dewaxed papers during humid heating aging. Beeswax-treated Hanji was dewaxed by the supercritical fluid extraction method, and subsequently the strengthening treatment was performed with MCs having three different viscosities. MC was first applied by dipping a dewaxed paper into a MC solution whose concentration was controlled from 0.5% to 1.5%. After the strengthened papers were artificially aged at $80^{\circ}C$ and 65% RH, the changes in optical and mechanical properties of the samples were evaluated. The results show that viscosity and especially pick-up of MC influenced the strengthening efficiency and aging characteristics of dewaxed paper. Strength was increased with the MC coating weight; in addition, strengthening with MC improved preservability of the dewaxed paper. The optimum conditions for the strengthening with MC was found to be the coating ratio of 4% with 1500 cP MC.

  • An intensive interaction between yeasts and insects has highlighted their relevance for attraction to food and for the insect's development and behavior. Yeast associated in the gut of insects secretes cellulase which aided in the food digestion (cellulose degradation). Three strains of cellulose-degrading yeast were isolated from the gut of adult grasshoppers collected in Gyeonggi Province, South Korea. The strains $ON22^T$, $G10^T$, and $G15^T$, showed positive cellulolytic activity in the carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC)-plate assay. The phylogenetic tree based on sequence analysis of D1/D2 domains of the large subunit rRNA gene and the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) regions revealed that the strains $ON22^T$ (100 and 98.4% sequence similarities in D1/D2 domains and ITS) and $G10^T$ (99.8 and 99.5% in D1/D2 domain and ITS region) were most closely related to the species Moesziomyces aphidis JCM $10318^T$; $G15^T$ (100% in D1/D2 domains and ITS) belongs to the species Moesziomyces antarcticus JCM $10317^T$, respectively. Morphology and biochemical test results are provided in the species description. Cellulase with its massive applicability has been used in various industrial processes such as biofuels like bioethanol productions. Therefore, this is the first report of the cellulolytic yeast strains $ON22^T$, $G10^T$, and $G15^T$ related to the genus Moesziomyces in the family Ustilaginaceae (Ustilaginales), in Korea.

  • In this study, a multi-layered pellet was composed of a seed layer including a water-swellable agent and a drug layer containing doxazosin as a model drug, a porous membrane and a castor oil layer to control drug release. The pellet is prepared by a fluidized bed coating method. To confirm drug release from polymer blending in multi-layered pellet system, it is prepared by containing different ratio such as hydroxypropylmethylcellulose (HPMC) : ethyl cellulose (EC) in drug layer and cellulose acetate(CA) : Eudragit RS in membrane. Also, to confirm the effect of oil in drug release, castor oil is coated. As a result, we observed regularly spherical pellet with diameter of $1500{\mu}m$. Release pattern of drug is confirmed by dissolution tester in aqueous media. The more the ratio of EC in drug layer, CA in membrane, and castor oil layer in pellet, the less the drug release is observed. Formation and the amount of pores in membrane is observed by SEM.

  • Zaltoprofen is a propionic acid derivative of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) and has been widely used in the treatment of a number of arthritic conditions or lumbago. Zaltoprofen has low water solubility and low bioavailability, therefore great efforts have been devoted to enhance the extent of drug adsorption. In this study, zaltoprofen was formulated into a tablet to enhance the bioavailability and to achieve sustained-release using additives such as lactose monohydrate, carboxymethylcellulose (CMC), hydroxypropylmethylcellulose (HPMC). Fourier transform-infrared (FTIR) and differential scanning calorimeter (DSC) were employed to study the structure and crystallization of zaltoprofen in the tablet with various contents of additives. It was found that additives had interactions with zaltoprofen and inhibited the crystallization of zaltoprofen. Tablets containing low viscosity HPMC showed a higher release than those containing high viscosity HPMC. Also, as the amount of CMC increased zaltoprofen release increased.

  • This study analyzed CT values of radiolucent and radiopaque materials by energy region after selecting radiolucent and radiopaque materials at random using GE's DECT((Dual Energy Com-puted Tomography) at S University Hospital located in Gyeonggi-province from July through August in 2013. Besides, it drew out the most analogous energy region to the value of 120kVp CT, which is applied to existing SECT(Single Energy Computed Tomography), by utilizing the analysis method of CT values and tried to find out the most useful and appropriate materials when contrast was applied within visible area in clinical application. As a result, there was little decrease of CT value after 90KeV in the case of materials with low density and high moisture content such as normal saline, methyl-cellulose and gels used in ultra-sonic waves test; energy does not influence much on materials with extremely low or high density such as air and contrast medium; methyl-cellulose and gels used in ultra-sonic waves test are considered to be the most useful materials for clinical applications.

  • Biodegradable wafers were prepared with poly (L-lactide-co-glycolide) (50 : 50 mole ratio of lactide to glycolide, molecular weight:5000 g/mole) by direct compression method for the sustained release of nifedipine to investigate the possibility of the treatment of hypertension. PLGA wafers were prepared by altering initial drug/polymer loading ratio, wafer thickness, and hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC) content. These wafers showed new zero-order release patterns for 11 days, and various biphasic release patterns could be obtained by altering the composition of wafers such as addition of matrix binder as HPMC to the PLGA wafer to reduce release rate of initial phase. The onset of polymer mass loss only occured after 4 days and about 40% of mass loss was observed after 11 days nifedipine release. This system had advantages in terms of simplicity in design and obviousness of drug release rate and may be useful as an implantable dosage form.

  • The primary objective of this work is to find the properties of sustained release dissolution pattern depending on solubility of drugs, so venlafaxine HCl and carbamazepine tablets were made by using polymer wich various particle size. Hydroxy propyl methyl cellulose (HPMC) has been utilized in this study as an excipient that is one of the most widely used polymers for an oral sustained release formulation, and drug release pattern was strongly influenced by swelling rate depending on particle size of HPMC. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) was employed to investigate the surface of tablets with various HPMC particle size, and differential scanning calorimeter (DSC) was employed to investigate the crystallization of drugs in tablets. The release model equation was applied to analyze the main mechanism of drug release pattern. The results demonstrate that drug release pattern is controlled by the drug solubility and HPMC particle size.
