In this study, cellulose-based bacterial pellets was used for the self-healing concrete manufacturing. The pellet is composed of complex cultured bacterial spore powder, methyl cellulose, two kinds of PVA nutrients and water, and is extruded through a hydraulic press to have a shape of 2mm in diameter to 3 to 4mm in length. Cellulose pellets expand at neutral pH, release bacteria and nutrients, and do not react in a basic environment, increasing the long-term survival rate of bacteria in cement mortar. In addition, pellet self-healing performance of pellet mortar was significantly higher than that of control mortar. Cellulose-based pellets are a new type of bacterial carrier system that will help develop self-healing concrete in the future by improving and optimizing pellets.

Silanized-hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (Si-HPMC)/phase transformed calcium phosphate (PTCP) composites are prepared to purpose application of injectable bone cements with enhanced biocompatibility. The crystal structure and chemical state of the synthesized PTCP and Si-HPMC as solid and liquid phase of the composite cements were measured by XRD and FT-IR. The handling and mechanical properties of cements were measured by injectability tests and three-point bending tests. The in-vitro mechanical properties, XRD, and SEM results of bone cements were showed that enhanced hardening behavior was an inherent function of bone cements after in-vitro test. The cytotoxicity result of bone cements also was showed enhanced biocompatibility. Therefore, these injectable cements had potential be used as calcium phosphate cements for biomedical applications.

This study was performed to develop antimicrobial films using polyvinyl alcohol and methyl cellulose. Methyl cellulose and polyvinyl alcohol films plasticized with PEG(polyethylene glycol) were prepared by solvent casting process under addition of 0.025~1.0 wt% ampicillin and 0.1~1.0 wt% streptomycin as an antimicrobial agent. The mechanical properties of prepared films were examined by universal testing machine(UTM). Tensile strength of methyl cellulose films was 15.44~21.70 $N/mm^2$. Tensile strength of PVA(15 wt%) film was 20.2~51.5 $N/mm^2$, and the tensile strength of the antimicrobial films were decreased linearly with increasing the antibiotic loading amount up to 1 wt%. Antimicrobial activities of PVA and methyl cellulose films containing ampicillin and streptomycin through the disc diffusion test for the Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli. The antimicrobial activity of methyl cellulose films and PVA containing ampicillin were higher than that of containing streptomycin methyl cellulose films. The results indicate the films may be a proper materials for antimicrobial packing applications.
In this study, four natural polymers were added into rice flour to prepare rice noodle and their effects on the fabrication of rice noodle were examined. Also, the effect of water dosage and natural polymer content on the noodle-making properties of rice noodle was investigated. Addition of xanthan gum showed the best performance of noodle formation, while crystalline cellulose did not help the improvement of noodle making properties of rice dough. Regardless of natural polymer type, the amount of water dosage and polymer content influenced significantly the performance of rice noodle formation. In case of xanthan gum, 3% polymer content and 64~68% water dosage were the best conditions to fabricate a good rice noodle. Guar gum showed the best performance at 2~3% guar gum addition and 66% water content. Finally, 3% carboxymethyl cellulose and 64% water dosage were optimum condition for good formation of rice noodle.
In this study, hydroxypropyl methylcelluloses (HPMCs) were added to prepare the rice noodle and the effects of water dosage, HPMC content, and viscosity level of HPMC on the noodle-making properties of rice dough were examined. As the water dosage was increased, the rice dough after roller pass became more flat and homogeneous. However, when the water dosage was over a certain range, the rice noodle became more waved. In the test result of various HPMC contents, 3% HPMC addition was turned out to be an optimum condition for the best noodle-making properties of rice dough. As the viscosity level of HPMC decreased, the rice dough after roller pass became inhomogeneous. However, the lowest viscosity level HPMC (PMC 40H) did not show any waved rice noodle at even high water dosage indicating the improved noodle-making properties of rice dough. On the whole, it seems that 56~58% water dosage, 3% HPMC content, and high viscosity HPMC (PMC60U) were the optimum condition for preparation of good rice noodle.
Immature plums(Prunus salicina L.) were coated with edible coatings, calcium-added methyl cellulose(CaMC) and hydroxy propyl methyl cellulose-15(CaHPMC-15). Weight loss and respiration rate of immature plums coated with CaMC and CaHPMC-15 were lower only at the earlier storage period. The titratable acidity of plums was decreased and pH was increased during storage, Soluble pectin, pectinesterase, and polygalacturonase activity as the marker of softening were commonly increased with storage time, but those increases were lower in CaMC and CaHPMC-15-coated plums. Mechanical firmness became significantly soft during storage, while the coated plums were remained harder. As a result of sensory evaluation, softening of plum tissue was found during storage, but the coated plums had the harder texture. These data suggest that the application of CaMC or CaHPMC-15 coatings into immature plums can reduce the postharvest softening during storage.

In this study, in order to recycle the stems of opuntia cactus discarded after harvesting the fruit, the cactus stems were powdered and applied as a cement-based admixture. The powder of cactus stem was mixed into the mortar, and its effect on the fresh properties and strength of the mortar was studied. The results were compared with the properties of mortars produced by mixing with a retarder sugar and a viscosity agent methyl-cellulose, which are conventional saccharide-based admixtures. Based on the test results, the cactus stem powder did not clearly show the effect as a retarding agent, whereas the flow and the air content were similar to those of the mortar mixed with methyl-cellulose. This indicated that the cactus stem powder can be used as a viscosity agent. It was found that the strength of the mortar tended to increase when the mixing ratio of the cactus stem powder was lower than 0.3%.
Reactive hydroxypropyl methylcellulose phthalate (reactive HPMCP) was synthesized by using a stepwise urethane reaction with isophorone diisocyanate (IPDI) and 2-hydroxyethyl moth acrylate (HEMA). Molecular weight, acid number, and critical micelle concentration (CMC) of the synthesized reactive HPMCP and pristine HPMCP were measured and used as a polymeric surfactant in the emulsion polymerizations of styrene. In the preparation of HPMCP-hybrid poly styrene nanoparticles, 6, 9, 12, 18, and 24 wt% of HPMCPs were introduced, and the maximum rate of polymerization ($R_{p,max}$), the average number of radicals per particle (n), particle size distribution were investigated. In addition, core - shell morphology of the nanoparticles were observed by using TEM and their thermal stabilities were measured by using TGA. Reactive HPMCP showed higher $R_{p,max}$, smaller particle size, larger values of n and gel contents as compared with pristine HPMCP, due to the vinyl groups from HEMA, which can be reacted with styrene oligomers, in the reactive HPMCP.
The rheological properties of poly (acrylonitrile) (PAN) and cellulose acetate (CA) blend solutions in N,N-dimethyl formamide (DMF) were investigated in terms of temperature and blend composition. The solutions exhibited a very characteristic rheological behavior with variation of temperature. 8 wt% solution showed an increase of viscosity and a decrease of loss tangent as temperature was increased over the temperature range of 20 and $60^{\circ}C$. At $20^{\circ}C$ the physical properties of the solutions exhibited dependence on the blend composition. At 40 and $60^{\circ}C$, however, the effects of blend ratio on the physical properties notably diminished. The longer relaxation time at higher temperature indicated that the formation of physical structures resulting from intermolecular interactions was promoted with increasing temperature. The odd rheological responses were further elucidated by measuring of the physical properties of dilute solutions. The intrinsic viscosity of the solutions suggested that the coiled chain dimension was reduced with increasing temperature.
