  • In this study, we design and develop a VLC test-bed system which has been recently issued and focused as good convergence technology in the world. We classify the developed system into transmission part including analog LED driver module, digital signal modulation module, and receiver part with light sensing module and signal demodulation module. Then we introduce important characteristics and components. We analyze some factors for each module. To validate the communication of the designed VLC system, we develop a VLC sender-receiver simulator which can control the dimming factor and flicker-free effect. From the developed system, we observed about 12Mbps of data transmission rate with 0.5m~1m of distance, without packet loss. We verified the real-time communication with multimedia streaming which can be considered as very high date rate. The developed system and technology will be useful for some converged data services like indoor positing, home appliances, and indoor parking system.

  • Management of biosignal data in mobile devices causes many problems in real-time transmission of large volume of multimedia data or storage devices. Therefore, this research paper intends to suggest an m-Health system, a clinical data processing system using mobile in order to provide quick medical service. This system deployed health system on IP network, compounded outputs from many bio sensing in remote sites and performed integrated data processing electronically on various bio sensors. The m-health system measures and monitors various biosignals and sends them to data servers of remote hospitals. It is an Android-based mobile application which patients and their family and medical staff can use anywhere anytime. Medical staff access patient data from hospital data servers and provide feedback on medical diagnosis and prescription to patients or users. Video stream for patient monitoring uses a scalable transcoding technique to decides data size appropriate for network traffic and sends video stream, remarkably reducing loads of mobile systems and networks.

  • A robotically assisted field material handling system designed for loading and unloading of a planar pallet with a forklift in unstructured field environment is presented. The system uses combined acoustic/visual sensing data to define the position/orientation of the pallet and to determine the specific locations of the two slots of the pallet, so that the forklift can move close to the slot and engage it for transport. In order to reduce the complexity of the material handling operation, we have developed a method based on the integration of 2-D range data of Poraloid ultrasonic sensor along with 2-D visual data of an optical camera. Data obtained from the two separate sources complements each other and is used in an efficient algorithm to control this robotically assisted field material handling system . Range data obtained from two linear scannings is used to determine the pan and tilt angles of a pallet using least mean square method. Then 2-D visual data is used to determine the swing angle and engagement location of a pallet by using edge detection and Hough transform techniques. The limitations of the pan and tilt orientation to be determined arc discussed. The system developed is evaluated through the hardware and software implementation. The experimental results are presented.

  • With the recent development of small computing devices, IoT sensor network can be widely deployed and is now readily available with sensing, calculation and communi-cation functions at low cost. Sensor data management is a major component of the Internet of Things environment. The huge volume of data produced and transmitted from sensing devices can provide a lot of useful information but is often considered the next big data for businesses. New column-wise compression technology is mounted to the large data server because of its superior space efficiency. Since sensor nodes have narrow bandwidth and fault-prone wireless channels, sensor-based storage systems are subject to incomplete data services. In this study, we will bring forth a short overview through providing an analysis on IoT sensor networks, and will propose a new storage management scheme for IoT data. Our management scheme is based on RAID storage model using column-wise segmentation and compression to improve space efficiency without sacrificing I/O performance. We conclude that proposed storage control scheme outperforms the previous RAID control by computer performance simulation.

  • Previous research on sensor networks mainly focused on efficient transmission of data from sensors to fixed sink nodes. Recently there has been active research on mobile sink nodes, but the re-search of an environment where both fixed sink nodes and mobile sinks are present at the same time is rather scarce. This paper proposes a technique for context gathering by mobile devices with the sink functionality added through fixed sinks under a previously built, cluster based multi hop sensor network environment. To this end, clustering of mobile devices were done based on the fixed sinks of a previously built sensor network, and by using appropriate fixed sinks, context gathering was made possible. By mathematical comparison with TTDD routing protocol, which was proposed for mobile sinks, it was conformed that performance increases in energy with the number of mobile sinks, and with the number of movements by mobile devices.

  • In this paper, we propose a distributed model that recognize ADLs of human can be occurred in daily living places. We collect and analyze user's environmental, location or activity information by simple sensor attached home devices or utensils. Based on these information, we provide a lifecare services by inferring the user's life pattern and health condition. But in order to provide a lifecare services well-refined activity recognition data are required and without enough inferred information it is very hard to build an ADL activity recognition model for high-level situation awareness. The sequence that generated by sensors are very helpful to infer the activities so we utilize the sequence to analyze an activity pattern and propose a distributed linear time inference algorithm. This algorithm is appropriate to recognize activities in small area like home, office or hospital. For performance evaluation, we test with an open data from MIT Media Lab and the recognition result shows over 75% accuracy.

  • Recently, the Internet of Thing (IoT) technology is expanding explosively in the number of devices and applications in many application areas. In IoT systems, sensors and actuators are connected to the Internet and cooperate to do some applications by exchanging information. In this paper an IoT smart home system is developed to monitor and control home devices easily. Our system consists of sensor devices, IoT gateways, and an IoT server. Sensor devices developed using Rfduino sense the physical world and transmit their data using BLE to the IoT server thru the IoT gateway. We implemented the IoT gateway using Raspberry Pi and the IoT server using ARTIK cloud. We installed our system and made a test in our lab, which showed that our system can be installed and managed easily and extended its functionality in an easy way. By taking advantage of the rule mechanism and action messages of ARTIK cloud, we implemented the control of device parameters easily by sending action messages to the ARTIK cloud.

  • Network clustering has been proposed to provide that sensor nodes minimize energy and maximize a network lifetime by configuring clusters, Although dynamic clustering brings extra overhead like as head changing, head advertisement, it may diminish the gain in energy consumption to report attribute tasks by using cluster heads. Therefore, this paper proposes a new routing algorithm which configures cluster to reduce the number of messages when establishing paths and reports to the sink by way of cluster heads when responding sens ing tasks. All sensor nodes only broadcast bitmap once and maintain a bitmap table expressed by bits, allowing them to reduce node energy and to prolong the network lifetime. After broadcasting, each node only updates the bitmap without propagation when the adjacent nodes broad cast same query messages, This mechanism makes nodes to have abundant paths. By modifying the query which requests sensing tasks, the size of cluster is designed dynamically, We try to divide cluster by considering the number of nodes. Then, all nodes in a certain cluster must report to the sub- sink node, The proposed routing protocol finds easily an appropriate path to report tasks and reduces the number of required messages for the routing establishment, which sensor nodes minimize energy and maximize a network lifetime.

  • Remote sensing using multispectral radiometry may be a useful tool to detect drought stress in turf. The objective of this research was to investigate the correlation between drought stress and multispectral reflectance (MSR) from the turf canopy. St. Augustinegrass (Stenotaphrum secundatum[Walt.] Kuntze.) cultivars 'Floratam' and 'Palmetto', 'SeaIsle 1' seashore paspalum Paspalum vaginatum Swartz.), 'Empire' zoysiagrass (Zoysia japonica Steud.), and 'Pensacola' bahiagrass (Paspalum notatumFlugge) were established in lysimeters in the University of Florida Envirotron greenhouse facility in Gainesville. Irrigation was applied at 100%, 80%, 60%, or 40% of evapotranspiration (ET). Weekly evaluations included: a) shoot quality, leaf rolling, leaf firing b) soil moisture, chlorophyll content index; c) photosynthesis and d) multispectral reflectance. All the measurements were correlated with MSR data. Drought stress affected the infrared spectral region more than the visible spectral region. Reflectance sensitivity to water content of leaves was higher in the infrared spectral region than in the visible spectral region. Grasses irrigated at 100% and 80% of ET had no differences in normalized difference vegetation indices (NDVI), leaf area index (LAI), and stress indices. Grasses irrigated at 60% and 40% of ET had differences in NDVI, LAI, and stress indices. All measured wavelengths except 710nm were highly correlated (P < 0.0001) with turf visual quality, leaf firing, leaf rolling, soil moisture, chlorophyll content index, and photosynthesis. MSR could detect drought stress from the turf canopy.
