  • This study was performed to compare international analytical methods of bromate and applied to determine bromate in bottled mineral water in Korea. Bromate in bottled mineral water was eluted by 10~50 mM potassium hydroxide (KOH) and determined by ion chromatograph-suppressed conductivity detector (ICCD). Sample was purified with on guard Ba-, Ag- and H-cartridges and $0.2\;{\mu}m$ membrane filter. The method detection limit (MDL) and the limit of quantitation (LOQ) of bromate were 0.1 and $0.5\;{\mu}g/L$, respectively. The calibration curve showed good lineality above 0.9998 in the ranges of the $0.5\sim40\;{\mu}g/L$. Bromate from 33 samples among total 157 bottled mineral water samples was detected in the concentration range of $0.5\sim6.5\;{\mu}g/L$. The detected concentrations were within bottled mineral water quality criteria ($10\;{\mu}g/L$) in Korea.

  • Bottled water companies in Korea are required to conduct an environmental impact assessment of their drinking water supply at least six months before the expiration of their five-year marketing and production license. The water level drawdown, production well water quality, and monitoring well observation results are the most important items that are evaluated in the assessment report. Here we evaluate the relationship between well drawdown and pumping capacity with pumping time from the production wells of bottled water manufacturers located in Cretaceous granite (site A) and Precambrian gneiss (site B). The method to reduce the pumping capacity is more effective in decreasing the drawdown than the method to simultaneously control the pumping and recovery times. Furthermore, the monitoring data from the pH monitoring sensors that were installed in Precambrian gneiss (site C) yield pH values that increase with time and eventually plateau at a certain value. We therefore propose that pH monitoring is either discontinued or improved to provide more reliable and usable results.

  • BACKGROUND: According to Korean regulations, bottled waters (BWs) can not be treated with chemical disinfectants like chlorine, so UV and ozone disinfection is applied. During the past several years, chemicals were detected in some BWs, and the public was concerned about the safety of BWs. METHODS AND RESULTS: Mineral waters were stored for 180 days at $25^{\circ}C$ and $50^{\circ}C$, tested acetaldehyde and formaldehyde by HPLC. When mineral waters were put in a PET bottles, the formaldehyde level ranged from 5 to $66{\mu}g/L$ during 180 days at $50^{\circ}C$. While the acetaldehyde level ranged from 31 to $221{\mu}g/L$, it was low than $16{\mu}g/L$ in glass bottle. CONCLUSION(s): This result showed that formaldehyde and acetaldehyde were detected higher in PET bottles than glass bottles, these also increased depending on the time of storage. Concentration of formaldehyde and acetaldehyde could be significantly influenced by the time of storage and temperature.

  • Since the official allowance of bottled water at Korean domestic market in 1995, Pseudomo~zas aemginosu has been detected from 2.3% and 1.2% of source and products of bottled water sa~nple tested, respectively. according to the nation-wide dala froin May 1995 to December 1996. Therefore, P aeivginosa was the second most important parameter, next to colifoi~ns, anlong the bacieriological parameters regulated for bonled water. The official standard method initially adopted the Japanese officlal method and Standard Methods of the US, w~hich is using aspai-agiii-acetamid mnedia(A-A method). how eve^; the method showed low specificity regardless of the high sensitivity. The $42^{\circ}C$ growth test was the best biochemical featu1-e differentiating the P uelarginosu 6-om P aei-uginosa-like species such as P puririir and P Jhoi.escens amo1zg the other characierisiics such as fluorescence pigment_ pyocyanin, casein hy&olysis, etc. Thel-efore, addition of the $42^{\circ}C$ growth Lest in advance ofthe biochemical identification test, when sainple is positive by A-A method, should strengthen the spec~IiclQ w~tli ~ninin~um addition of testing load.

  • 56 samples were analyzed to understand water quality of the natural mineral water of Korea. The geology according to each sample location is grouped into Precambrian metamorphic rocks, Okcheon metamorphic rocks, Jurassic granite, Cretaceous granite, and Jeju volcanic rocks. Average EC and pH values of the water is 150 μS/cm and 7.3, respectively and water type of the water is mainly Ca-Na-HCO3. Fundamentally, there still is no problem for the water quality of the natural mineral water. Nevertheless, nitrate was detected and arsenic and fluoride contents are near the drinking water standards, it is highly necessary to manage the water quality by installment of casing and grouting or by development of another production well.
