  • Steel slag has the nature to hydrate and expand when in contact with non-reacting CaO and water, and thus can be used only in limited scope for landfill disposal as well as for recycling as civil construction aggregates. In order to use such steel slags more efficiently, the applicability of steel slag as sand mat alternative material was reviewed. In general, sand mat is used in soft ground surface reinforcement method and horizontal drain method, and is installed simultaneously with soft ground vertical drain method. Therefore in this study steel slag designing method and application standard etc were examined to recycle steel slag as sand mat alternative material, and laboratory soil test and model test were done. Test results indicated that the designing method and application standard meet various environment and quality standards, meaning that steel slag can be utilized as sand mat alternative material, and analysis of slag mat bearing capacity also indicated that use of steel slag produces double or more bearing capacity compared with existing sand mat.

  • By the activation of environment-friendly river works, application of vegetation mats is increasing, however, evaluation techniques for hydraulic stability of vegetation mats are not presented. This study is conducted to develop the objective test method for vegetation mats. Two kind of vegetation mats are tested by the real scale experiments, and hydraulic quantities are measured and analyzed to evaluate acting shear stresses. To evaluate soil loss, Terrestrial 3D LiDAR measurement is conducted and soil loss index are calculated from changes of bed elevation. Quantified evaluation for permissible shear stresses is conducted by graphical method for acting shear stresses and soil loss index. By the results of precision survey, changes of sub soil are limited to local range in stable cases and relatively large changes of sub soil which is similar to natural river bed are detected in unstable cases. From the study, evaluation of permissible shear stresses by ASTM D 6040 is avaliable in the failure mechanism and failure criteria by soil loss index.

  • Waste tires can be used not only for reinforcement material due to its high capacity against tensile force but also effective for massive treatment. In order to use waste tire as reinforcing material Tread mat using tire treads only was made. Plate load tests on the embankment of decomposed granite soil reinforced with Tread mat and geogrids were conducted for comparison with the test results, respectively. And numerical analyses were performed to see the stress and stain around the reinforced material. Tread mat showed bearing capacity increase and the amount was bigger than that of commercial geogrids. Finite element analysis showed decrease of stress beneath the reinforced material and stress distribution. Finally Tread mat was proposed to use for soil reinforcement as a means of massive treatment of discarded tire.

  • This study was aimed to select the optimal mat condition using existing plant-mats for the efficient planting of bedding Chrysanthemum. At fifty days after cutting with Dendranthema grandiflorum 'Ford', root formation among the treatments using eight different mats outstood with the treatment using 10 mm thick coir net, which has medium inserted between mat layers - called C treatment, compared to other treatments; this treatment had the highest values in the plant height and shoot fresh weight, which were 29 cm and 5.6 g, respectively. On the contrary, in 40 days after transplanting root-formed mats to field, 12 mm thick jute net, which has medium inserted between mat layers, had the highest plants compared to other treatments. However, there was no significant difference in shoot weight compared to C treatment. In experiment of different lengths of cut, the results of growth after transplanting showed that 5 cm long cut performed best compared to 3 and 8 cm long cuts.

  • This research investigated the effect of solar radiation on the temperature distribution in concrete mat foundation. Zhang and Huang Model was utilized to estimate solar radiation heat at a given date and time. A one-dimensional finite element formula was derived with the fundamental laws of heat transfer and Galerkin method. Based on the formula, a one dimensional finite element analysis code was developed using MATLAB. Hydration heat analysis of mat foundation were conducted using the developed code. It was found that the solar radiation reduced the maximum temperature difference in mat foundation, and this temperature difference reduction was more prominent in case of summer season cast, a higher initial concrete temperature, and a thicker mat foundation depth. The research recommended that the solar radiation should be considered in hydration heat analysis of concrete mat foundation so as not to overestimate the maximum temperature difference in mat foundation.

  • Even though the scale of hard structures for beach stabilization should carefully be determined such that these structures do not interrupt the great yearly circulation process of beach sediment in which the self-healing ability of natural beach takes places, massive hard structures such as the submerged breakwater of wide-width are frequently deployed as the beach stabilization measures. On this rationale, asymmetric ripple mat by Irie et al. (1994) can be the alternatives for beach stabilization due to its small scale to replace the preferred submerged breaker of wide-width. The effectiveness of asymmetric ripple mat is determined by how effectively the vortices enforced at the contraction part of flow area over the mat traps the sediment moving toward the offshore by the run-down. In order to verify this hypothesis, we carry out the numerical simulations based on the Navier-Stokes equation and the physically-based morphology model. Numerical results show that the asymmetric ripple mat effectively capture the sediment by forced vortex enforced at the apex of asymmetric ripple mat, and bring these trapped sediments back to the beach, which has been regarded to be the driving mechanism of beach stabilization effect of asymmetric ripple mat.

  • In the present study, composite insulation mat was reinforced over polyurethane foam (PUF) to improve the thermal performance and impact resistance of the PUF applied to the liquefied natural gas carrier insulation system. The composite insulation mat used Kevlar, aerogel, and cryogel composite mat that can be applied in a cryogenic environment. The thermal conductivity was measured at $20^{\circ}C$ to investigate the thermal performance, and the drop impact test was carried out under impact energy of 30 J at $20^{\circ}C$, $-163^{\circ}C$ to investigate the impact resistance. The measured thermal performance was compared with neat PUF through effective thermal conductivity theoretical value. The shock resistance was evaluated of contact force, contact time, and absorb energy. In experimental results, cryogel composite mat was the best performance in terms of thermal performance, and aerogel composite mat was the best performance in terms of impact resistance.

  • In this paper, an experimental study was conducted to present the properties of rapid hardening composite mat, and a numerical analysis was carried out to analyze the slope protection effect of the mats based on ground conditions, rainfall, slope gradient and soil height. As a result, the application of rapid hardening composite mat increased the slope safety factor in all conditions, and the increase rate of safety factor showed an average of 40% increase both in dry and rainy seasons. Through these research findings, the protective effect of the rapid hardening composite mat on sloping surfaces has been proven, and it is suggested that the rapid hardening composite mat is suitable for application in areas where slope failure or collapse is expected.

  • Objectives: We aimed to evaluate the effects of mattress type on both objective and subjective sleep quality in healthy good sleepers. Methods: Fifteen healthy good sleepers with a mean age of 30.8 years participated in this study. A randomized crossover trial was carried out using two different mattress types: a standard mattress and a contour coil mattress. After a night of adaptation, all participants were randomized to either a standard mattress or a contour coil mattress. Then, nocturnal polysomnography was conducted for two consecutive nights. Subjective evaluations were obtained using a self-report questionnaire before and after the polysomnographic recording sessions. Results: The polysomnographic showed no differences in total sleep time, sleep stage, or wake time after sleep onset between the two mattress conditions. Of the polysomnographic variables, only sleep onset latency was significantly reduced for the contour coil mattress. Additionally, participants reported better subjective sleep quality when sleeping on the contour coil mattress, according to the questionnaires. Conclusion: The type of mattress might affect not only subjective, but also objective sleep quality, including sleep onset latency.
