  • It was reported that a mobile application was designed to easily provide natural dyeing information such as natural dye related resources, colors and dyed fabrics in 2007. Since studies on the linkage, application, etc. between natural dye dyeing and IoT are still lacking, diversity of information on the change of dyeing pattern by natural dye dyeing is required. In this study, it was to construct dyeing information by natural dyes, e.g., Lithospermum erythrorhizon, on silk, which has been traditionally used as many fibers in Korea. The extraction of the dye from L. erythrorhizon was carried out under pH4. The dried root of L. erythrorhizon showed dark brownish purple. Silk fabric by a without a mordant typically showed a purple dyed pattern. In the staining by sodium tartrate plus citric acid, silk fabric was stained clear brown. Interestingly, the mordant of iron (II) sulfate, the silk fabric was dyed in a light gray color rather than black. When the mordant of aluminum potassium sulfate was treated with L. erythrorhizon-extracted dye, the results were almost the same as when the mordant was not treated. When the degree of dyeing was evaluated numerically, the treatment of the mordant of potassium dichromate was about 50% darker, and the dyeing by iron (II) sulfate was about 75% darker. These results will be helpful in the study of applying various dye colors using L. erythrorhizon, and it will provide information on dyeing controller and database system construction by dyeing parameters such as dyeing degree, pH concentration, and chromaticity change.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the utilization of pruned branch of a peach tree as natural dyeing material. The dyestuff was extracted from pruned branch of a peach tree. we examined the dyeing ability on silk and cotten fabrics. The surface color of silk fabrics differed depending on mordants. E values in treatments of mordants ranged from 11.63 to 30.86 as compared to non-treatment. Dyeing properties of cotten fabrics were improved with a treatment of sulfate of iron as compared with of non-treatment. The values a increased when the slaked lime and sodium hydroxide were used as mordants, while the values b increased when copper sulfate, alum and apple vinegar were used. We investigated the surface colors of silk and cotten fabrics after washing three times. In general, the surface colors of silk and cotten fabrics between the treatments of all mordants and non-treatment were diminished by the washing. We also investigated the surface colors of silk and cotten fabrics when those were washed and treated by the light after soaking those into various pH solutions. The surface colors of silk and cotten fabrics were considerably preserved by the washing, the light and pH concentration. In conclusion, our results suggest that the dyestuffs from pruning branch of a peach tree would be useful as a natural dyeing material using the optimized conditions for silk and cotten dyeing.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the colorfastness of cotton and silk fabric dyed with extract of Lotus leaf princeps. The experimental items were classified into mordanting treatments, fabric components and kind of mordants. The experimental test was done by laundering, abrasion(dry/wet), perspiration(acid/alkali) , light fastness, color difference by C.C.M(computer color matching) system and K/S test. The summarized findings resulting from the experiment and investigation are as follows: In the C.C.M and K/S test on mordanting method and kind of fabrics, co-mordanting treatment method and protein fabric (silk) were the most effective. Especially, Fe mordanting treatment was higher than Al, Cu, Cr and none-mordanting. In colorfastness on the mordants, perspiration and laundering fastness showed high grade (4-5) but grades of perspiration(2-3/4) and light fastness(1-3) were low.

  • This paper surveys the effect of rice straw ash solution to the physical properties of Sappan Wood dyeing fabrics. In the quantitative analysis of rice straw ash solution, the quantities of absorbed ingredients in fabrics were increased by bath pull treatment but the amount of absorption(K/S value) was increased by bath pH4.5 treatment. This is related to the metal ion. Among the metal ion, effect of Fe iou and Al ion were related. In case added extracted dye solution to mordants, the color dye solution became dark and increased reddish. The changes of mechanical properties of fabrics tensile resilience, bending rigidity(B), compressional resilience(RC) were increased. Generally mechanical properties were increased by rice straw ash solution treatment, specially bath pH9 treatment. Rice straw ash solution treatment of dyeing fabrics made the improvement in tensile strength and elongation and in the amount of absorption, dye ability, color fastness, mechanical properties, tensile strength, elongation.

  • The following study tests for the effects of mordants on the production of restoration papers during the conservation process of damaged paper artifacts. For this, four different types of synthetic mordants that are being marketed currently ($K_2CO_3$, $AlK(SO_4)_2{\cdot}12H_2O$, $Cu_2SO_4{\cdot}5H_2O$, $FeSO_4$) were selected to produce samples for measuring variable properties through artificial degradation. The research conducts tests for changes in color, tensile index, and pH level (degree of acidity). The results for changes in color have shown that the value of ${\Delta}E^*ab$ of $K_2CO_3$ mordant sample was the highest, and the tests for tensile index have shown that the strength of dyeing sample was decreased in accordance with the aging time, but Changes according to the mordant was not evident. Finally, the findings for pH level have shown that samples with $Cu_2SO_4{\cdot}5H_2O$ and $FeSO_4$ have pH levels drop below 6. As a result, the research have concluded that mordants used for dyeing restoration paper were identified to have an affect in the dyeing and aging characteristics of the paper.

  • A natural dyeing makes fabrics look unique and elegant which cannot be obtain by synthetic dyestuffs. The natural dyestuffs are harmless to human, and it is easy to get them. Also, the natural dyestuffs are environmentally frendly, which is the anther merit for natural dyeing,We investigated dyeability with several fabrics (cotton, wool, ramie, silk and nylon) using an elm bark. We mordants(natural and synthetic). Also, colorfastness in dyed fabrics was estimated by laundering and light. The optimum condition of dyeability in elm bark was 60 min as time, $80^{\circ}C$ as temperature and 1: 40 as bath ratio. The dyeability in silk and nylon was the best among the sample. The treatment of mordants improved the dyeability and colorfastness in silk, wool and nylon. We obtain various color by the mordants.

  • We dyed traditional Korean hand-made papers (Hanji) with colorants extracted from fruits of Alnus japonica to investigate the effect of various dyeing factors (mordant, dye concentration and dyeing assistant) on colors, K/S values and light fastness of the dyed Hanji. The dyed hanji had brown color. The K/S value of dyed Hanji was increased by mordanting with alum and copper acetate. $a^*$ and $b^*$ value of dyed Hanji was decreased slightly by mordanting with alum and Iron(II) chloride. The K/S value and $b^*$ of dyed Hanji increased with increasing concentration of dye, but $L^*$ value of dyed Hanji decreased. The K/S value of dyed Hanji was also increased by fixing agent. When Hanji was mordanted with Iron(II) chloride and was not mordanted, use of fixing agent resulted in greater increase of K/S value. Use of fixing agent resulted in poor light fastness. When fixing agent was used, mordanting with copper acetate resulted in smaller color difference than mordanting with alum after aging test.
