  • Recently, the unusual climate change is happening from the global warming in the whole world, the Korean peninsula is also no exception. It is predicted by many researchers that, in the near future, the Super-Typhoon of overwhelming power will occur due to rising temperatures on the sea surface around the Korean peninsula. In this study, numerical simulation has been performed with the Super-Typhoons which combined route of Typhoon Maemi with typhoon conditons of Hurricane Katrina (New Oleans in U.S.A, 2005), Typhoon Durian (philippine, 2006) and Typhoon Vera (Ise Bay in Japan, 1959) at Busan and Gyeongnam coastal area which has been badly damaged due to storm surge every year. From the numerical results, it is revealed that the storm surge heights of the Super-Typhoons are higher than that of Maemi, specially the storm surge height in the case of Katrina is about 4 times larger. So, it can be pointed out that the construction of countermeasures against disasters are very important in order to prepare against an attack of the Super-Typhoons.

  • The frequency of natural disasters and the scale of damage are increasing due to the abnormal weather phenomenon that occurs worldwide. Especially, damage caused by natural disasters in coastal areas around the world such as Earthquake in Japan, Hurricane Katrina in the United States, and Typhoon Maemi in Korea are huge. If we can predict the damage scale in response to disasters, we can respond quickly and reduce damage. In this study, we developed damage prediction functions for Wind waves caused by sea breezes and waves during various natural disasters. The disaster report (1991 ~ 2017) has collected the history of storm and typhoon damage in coastal areas in Korea, and the amount of damage has been converted as of 2017 to reflect inflation. In addition, data on marine weather factors were collected in the event of storm and typhoon damage. Regression analysis was performed through collected data, Finally, predictive function of the sea turbulent damage by the sea area in 74 regions of the country were developed. It is deemed that preliminary damage prediction can be possible through the wind damage prediction function developed and is expected to be utilized to improve laws and systems related to disaster statistics.

  • This study was conducted to examine the attractiveness of yellow sticky trap (YST) for insect pests by the angle of inclination of the trap surface. In strawberry farms with high bed system, YSTs were installed to attract insect pests in vertical direction with one surface, horizontal direction with upper and under surface, and angle of $45^{\circ}$ with upper and lower sticky surface. Thrips (Frankliniella occidentalis in dominance) and Sciaridae (Bradysia agrestis in dominance) species were more attracted on upper surface of $45^{\circ}$ angle trap, vertical surface and upper surface of horizontal trap than on lower surface of $45^{\circ}$ angle trap or horizontal trap. Cicadellidae (Empoasca vitis in dominance) species were caught more on vertical surface and upper surface of $45^{\circ}$ angle trap than on other traps. There were no specific trend in capture of aphid (Aphis gossypii in dominance) and white fly (Trialeurodes packardi in dominance) species among traps, probably because of a low density of the pest species.

  • Fifteen insect species have been identified as olive pests through a survey conducted in olive orchards on Jeju island from 2019 to 2022. The occurrence and fruit damage caused by Lepidopteran and hemipteran were significant severity. Among the moths, the order in which the population was large was as follows: Alpita nigropunctalis, Aterpia circumfluxana, Homona magnanima, and Adoxophyes honmai. These lepidopteran species primarily caused damage to leaves, but P. nigropunctalis inflicted severe damage to the fruits by feeding on the inside. Three stink bugs, namely Plautia stali, Halyomorpha halys, and Chinavia hilaris, were commonly observed and responsible for damaging olive furits. Chrysomphalus bifasciculatus and Pseudaulacaspis pentagona were found to occur and damaged fruit in non-controlled orchard. Prociphilus oleae, which is being recognized for the first time in Korea, and Ricania shantungensis discovered for the first timein olive orchard. Saissetia olea, a quarantine pest, was found in one farm, but subsequent pesticide spraying resulted in their elimination. Although severe damage was inflicted upon the olives, no perforated pests were found during the survey.

  • This paper is to test the applicability of ModKIMSTORM (Modified KIneMatic Wave STOrm Runoff Model) by applying it to Namgangdam watershed of $2,293km^2$. Model inputs (DEM, land use, soil related information) were prepared in 500 m spatial resolution. Using five typhoon events (Saomi in 2000, Rusa in 2002, Maemi in 2003, Megi in 2004 and Ewiniar in 2006) and two storm events (May of 2003 and July of 2004), the model was calibrated and verified by comparing the simulated streamflow with the observed one at the outlet of the watershed. The Pearson's coefficient of determination $R^2$, Nash and Sutcliffe model efficiency E, the deviation of runoff volumes $D_v$, relative error of the peak runoff rate $EQ_p$, and absolute error of the time to peak runoff $ET_p$ showed the average value of 0.984, 0.981, 3.63%, 0.003, and 0.48 hr for 4 storms calibration and 0.937, 0.895, 8.08%, 0.138, and 0.73 hr for 3 storms verification respectively. Among the model parameters, the stream Manning's roughness coefficient was the most sensitive for peak runoff and the initial soil moisture content was highly sensitive for runoff volume fitting. We could look into the behavior of hyrologic components from the spatial results during the storm periods and get some clue for the watershed management by storms.
