Relationship of Blur Circle and Height of the Retinal Image about visual Acuity in a Artificial Myopia (인위적 근시에서 망막상의 크기와 시력과의 관계)

  • Compared visual acuity that is measured in a artificial myopia with the numerical calculation. Calculation included image's height as well as blur circle that is formed to retina. The blur circle calculated in geometrical optics model, and height of retinal image calculated by refractive power and visual acuity that is measured in a artificial myopia. Define this result as "blur ratio" about blur circle and height of retinal image, and investigated blur ratio relationship about visual acuity in a artificial myopia.

  • 안구는 외막, 중막, 내막, 등으로 이루어져 있고, 그 중에서 가장 중요한 부분의 망막이다. 망막은 외부 물체에서 오는 빛을 받아 그 양을 정량적으로 분척하여 뇌로 보내는 역할을 한다. 이로 인해서 망막이 손상되면 눈에 치명적인 영향을 주어 자칫 시력을 잃을 수 있다. 안과에서 의사들은 정확한 병명을 진단하거나 안전한 수술을 하기 위해서 명확한 망막의 상을 얻어야 한다. 본 연구는 공초점 방식으로 망막 영상을 획득하기 위한 연구로써, 폴리곤 미터, 갈바노 미터 등의 복잡한 광학적 시스템이 제안되었다. (중략)

A Case of Unilateral Focal Pigmented Paravenous Retinochoroidal Atrophy (단안에 국소적으로 발현된 색소정맥옆망막맥락막 위축 1예)

  • Purpose: We report a case of unilateral, focal, pigmented paravenous retinochoroidal atrophy (PPRCA). Case summary: A 46-year-old female visited our clinic in complaint of a vague problem with her right eye identified during a general medical examination. The visual acuity (without correction) of both eyes was 1.0. Slit-lamp examination of both eyes revealed no specific signs. Fundus examination of the right eye revealed focal, bony-spicule-shaped retinochoroidal atrophy with pigmentation along the course of the superior retinal vein. A fundus autofluorescence examination revealed principally hypofluorescence with some hyperfluorescence at the margin of the atrophic retinochoroidal lesion. Optical coherence tomography revealed mixed clumping and atrophy of the retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) layer and thinning of the choriocapillaris layer. Fluorescence angiography revealed a window defect and blockage at the site of the lesion (the fluorescent material did not enter the lesion). The site of the window defect was in correlation with the atrophic RPE region. The site of the blockage at lesion also matched with the site of the regional pigment clumping. No definite leakage was observed. Conclusions: To the best of our knowledge, this is the first case of unilateral focal PPRCA reported from Korea.

Hereditary Retinal Degeneration in a Siamese Cat (샴 고양이에서의 유전성 망막 변성 1례)

  • A 5-year-old Siamese cat was presented at the Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital in Seoul National University with visual impairment. The cat was blind and its pupillary light reflexes were sluggish OU. While there were no remarkable findings in the anterior segment, generalized tapetal hyperreflectivity and retinal vascular attenuation were observed in the posterior segment of both eyes. Any historical significance and clinical symptoms suggestive of infection or inflammation were absent. All of the above findings strongly indicated a diagnosis of hereditary retinal degeneration in the cat. This clinical case report demonstrates the possibility of the presence of feline hereditary retinal degeneration in Korea. Awareness of the condition should be raised to prevent the spread of hereditary retinopathy in the Korean cat population.

The Analysis of Optical Quality in Central Serous Chorioretinopathy by OQAS (OQAS를 이용한 중심장액성맥락망막병증의 광학적 질 분석)

  • Purpose: The present study was aimed to investigate the change of optical quality in fully cured eyes from central serous chorioretionopathy(CSC) and CSC under treatment, respectively. Methods: A total of 136 eyes(68 subjects) was divided into CMC under treatment and its asymptomatic contralateral eye, fully cured eyes after being diagnosed with CMC and its contralateral eye, and normal eyes. Objective scattering index, cut-off value in modulation transfer function, focusing rate, PSF(Point Spread Function) width at 50%, 10% and the contrast sensitivity were measured and analyzed. Results: CMC under treatment showed statistically significant decrease in all evaluations of optical quality compared with asymptomatic contralateral eyes, fully cured eyes and normal eyes. Although there was no significant difference in optical quality between asymptomatic contralateral eyes of CMC under treatment and fully cured eyes, there was tendence in optical quality decreasing compared with normal eyes. Conclusions: From the study, it was revealed that the optical quality was different according to the treatment phase in CMC. The use of optical quality assessment for the decision of complete cure and the evaluation of prognosis in CMC is also proposed.

Proposition for Retina Model Based on Electrophysiological Mechanism and Analysis for Spatiotemporal Response (전기생리학적 기전에 근거한 망막 모델의 제안과 시공간적 응답의 분석)

  • Based on electrophysiological retina mechanism, a retina model is proposed, which has similar response characteristics compared with the real primate retina. Photoreceptors, horizontal cells, and bipolar cells are modeled based on the previously studied retina models. And amacrine cells known to have relation to movements detection, and bipolar cell terminals are newly modeled using 3 NDP mechanism. The proposed model verified by analyzing the spatial response characteristics to stationary and moving stimuli, and characteristics for different speeds. Through this retina model, human vision system could be applied to computer vision systems for movement detection, and it could be the basic research for the implantable artificial retina.

Acute Phase Retinal Phototoxicity Induced by Blue Fluorescent Light (토끼에서의 청형광 광선에 의한 실험적 급성 망막독성)

  • Even though phototherapy is an effective means of treating hyperbilirubinemia, adequate binocular shields are essential to prevent light hazard of retina during phototherapy. The phototherapy to young albino rabbits was performed under various conditions; exposured for 12, 24, and 48 hours, continuity or intermittence of irradiation, and use of shields. Although there was no definite pathologic change in indirect ophthalmoscopic examination, severe damage was seen at electron microscopic level. In all experimental groups, swelling and edema of photoreceptor were seen at right after phototherapy. Futhermore, more severe damage was seen in case of intermittent irradiated group and prolong exposed group. In mydriatic eyes, severity of damage was similiar to non mydriatic eyes, but area of retinal damage was more extensive than non-mydriatic eyes. In control group which was protected by binocular shields during phototherapy, no significant abnormality was found.

  • 시각 자극의 운동 방향을 파악하는 것은 시각의 주요 기능 가운데 하나이다. 동일한 망막상의 영상 운동은 다양한 조합의 시각 자극의 운동 벡터와 눈 운동의 벡터의 합으로 발생할 수 있는데, 이렇게 망막 정보가 애매한 경우에도 불구하고 시각 자극의 움직임을 정확하게 파악하며, 이것은 시지각의 안정성을 돕는 망막 이외의 정보가 통합된 결과이다. 본 발표는 이러한 정보 중에 하나인 도약 안구 운동에 즈음하여 제시되는 시자극 운동의 지각 과정에서 안구 운동 정보의 역할을 결정한 실험의 결과에 관한 것이다. 도약 안구 운동의 발생 전후에 제시된 자극의 속성에 대한 판단은, 자극의 속성과 도약 안구 운동 방향에 따라 일정한 방식으로 조절되는 것을 관찰하였다. 이러한 시각 운동의 지각 왜곡을 일으키는 신경 기전은 일차 시각 피질에서 일어날 가능성이 있는 것으로 생각된다.

A Study of Optical System Design for a Retinal Camera (망막 카메라용 광학계 설계)

  • We need a good image of the retina of the human eye in order to inspect or cure it. In this work, an optical system design for a retinal camera is studied and the finite schematic eye model made by Sang Gee Kim and Sung Chan Park is used. The optical system is composed of four lens groups. The rays of the entire object field are collected on the center by the 1st group and the objective is imaged by all the other groups. The image is detected by the CCD array and displayed by a monitor The 1st lens group is employed singlet and other groups are employed triplets. Ray aberrations, spot diagrams, diffraction line spread functions and MTFs are calculated for optical performance assessment. This design may be very useful for the development of a retinal camera with high performance.
