  • The aim of this study is to prepare basic data that can be used for evaluation and intervention by investigating the characteristics of diphthongs produced by children with speech sound disorders. To confirm this, two groups of 10 children each, with and without speech sound disorders were asked to imitate the meaningless two-syllable 'diphthongs + da'. The slope of F1 and F2, amount of change of formant, and duration of glide were analyzed by Praat (version 6.1.16). As a result, the difference between the two groups was found in the slope of F1 of /ju/. Children with speech sound disorders had smaller changes in formants and shorter duration time values compared to normal children, and there were statistically significant differences. The amount of change in formant in the glide was found in F1 of /ju, jɛ/, F2 of /jɑ, jɛ/, and there were significant differences in the duration of glide in /ju, jɛ/. The results of this study showed that the range of articulation of diphthongs in children with speech sound disorders is relatively smaller than that of normal children, thus the time it takes to articulate was reduced. These results suggest that the range of articulation and acoustic analysis should be further investigated for evaluation and intervention regarding diphthongs of children with speech sound disorders.

  • A review regarding indicators used in Korean research is needed to develop a diagnostic marker system for Korean children with speech sound disorders (SSD). This literature review examined the research conducted to reveal the characteristics of children with SSD of unknown origin in Korea. The researchers in Korea used diverse variables as indicators to identify the natures of children with SSD. These included indicators related to external characteristics of speech sound and comorbid features other than external aspects of speech sound. The attention has been focused on specific indicators so far. This result implies that some indicators may still require closer study in various aspects due to their influence, and some may require more attention due to the limited number of research. This article argues that more research is necessary to comprehensively describe the unique characteristics of children with SSD of unknown origin and suggests a direction for future research regarding diagnostic markers and subtype classification of SSD. It also proposes potential diagnostic markers and a set of assessments for the subtype classification of SSD.

  • A speech processing model based on a psycholinguistic approach can identify the specific speech processing deficits of children with speech sound disorders (SSDs) through various pathways. In most cases, the cause of the speech problem with SSD children is unknown, so it is important to identify the underlying strengths and weaknesses for individualized intervention. In addition, because the native language deficits can also affect foreign language production, it is necessary to examine speech processing abilities between the two languages. This study is a preliminary study to develop a Korean-English speech processing task system. Speech production task and speech processing task (DT, PRT, NRT) were conducted both in Korean and English on 10 children with SSD and 20 normal children (NSA). As a result, the SSD group showed significantly lower production ability than the NSA group in both languages. As a result of the speech processing task, there was no significant difference in the discrimination task (DT), while there was a significant difference between language types in the phonological representation task (PRT) and between language types and groups in the nonword repetition task (NRT). The results of this study confirmed that children's native language and foreign language processing skills may be different, and that the sub-tasks of speech processing system should be further subdivided.

  • This study was to investigate the speech sound production characteristics and evaluation aspects of preschool children through word test and connected speech test. For this, the authors conducted Assessment of Phonology and Articulation for Children(APAC) to 72 normal children(24 three-, four-, and five-year-olds each) and analyzed difference in percent of correct consonant(PCC) and intelligibility according to age and sex, correlation between PCC and intelligibility, and speech sound error patterns. PCC and intelligibility increased with age but there was no difference according to sex. The correlation was statistically significant in 5-year-old group. Speech sound error patterns were different in the two tests. This study showed that children's speech sound production varied according to language unit. Therefore, both types of tests should be done to grasp their speech sound production ability properly. This suggests that current standard to identify language impairment only by PCC of word level requires review and further studies.

  • This study aims to develop a three-sentence speech screening test to evaluate speech development in 4-year-old children and provide standards for comparison with peers. Screening tests were conducted on 24 children each in the first and second halves of 4 years old. The screening test results showed a correlation of .7 with the existing speech disorder evaluation test results. We compared whether there was a difference between the two groups of 4-year-old in the phonological development indicators and error patterns obtained through the screening test. The developmental indicators of the children in the second half were high, but there were no statistically significant differences. The Korean Speech Sound Analysis Tool (KSAT) was used for all analyses, and the automatic analysis results and contents of the clinician's manual analysis were compared. The degree of agreement between the automatic and manual error pattern analyses was 93.63%. The significance of this study is that the standard of speech of a 4-year-old child of the speech screening test according to three sentences at the level of elicited sentences, and the applicability of the KSAT were reviewed in both clinical and research fields.

  • Sentence repetition is a way of evaluating speech sound production to improve the limitation of word tests and spontaneous speech analysis. Speech sounds produced by children can be evaluated using several indicators. This study examined the progression of the percentage of correct consonants-revised (PCC-R) and phonological whole-word measure in different age and gender groups after setting consonants in various vowel contexts and implementing sentence repetition tasks that were designed to give all phonemes the chance to appear at least three times. For this study, 11 sentence repetition tasks were applied to 535 children aged 3 to 7 across the country, after which the resulting PCC-R and whole-word measure were analyzed. The study results showed that all the indicators improved in older age groups and there were significant differences depending on age, however, no significant differences dependent on gender were found. The sentence repetition conditions data used in this study were collected from across the country, and the age difference between each age group was six months. This study is noteworthy because it collected a sufficient amount of data from each group, highlighted the limitation of the word naming and the spontaneous speech analysis, and suggests new criteria of evaluation through the analysis of each whole-word measure in sentence repetition, which was not applied in previous studies.

  • The significance of self-reported voice assessments concerning patients' chief complaints and quality of life has increased. Therefore, readability assessments of questionnaire items are essential. In this study, readability analyses were performed based on text grade and complexity, vocabulary frequency and grade, and lexical diversity of the 11 Korean versions of self-reported voice disorder questionnaires (KVHI, KAVI, KVQOL, K-SVHI, K-VAPP, K-VPPC, TVSQ, K-VDCQ, K-VFI, K-VTDS, and K-VoiSS). Additionally, a comparative readability assessment was conducted on the original versions of these questionnaires to discern the differences between their Korean counterparts and the questionnaires for children. Consequently, it was determined that voice disorder questionnaires could be used without difficulty for populations with lower literacy levels. Evaluators should consider subjects' reading levels when conducting assessments, and future developments and revisions should consider their reading difficulties.

  • This study was conducted to identify the characteristics of pauses and breath groups made by normal adults and patients with voice disorders while reading a paragraph. Forty normal female adults and forty female patients with a functional voice disorder (18-45 yrs.) read the "Gaeul" paragraph with the "Running Speech" protocol of the Phonatory Aerodynamic System (PAS), by which the pauses with or without inspiration and between or within syntactic words and breath groups were analyzed. The number of pauses with inspiration was found to be higher in the patient group, but the number of pauses without inspiration was higher in the normal group. The rate of syntactic word boundaries with pauses with inspiration was higher in the patient group, while the number of syllables per breath group was higher in the normal group. As these results can be explained by patients' poor breath support due to glottal insufficiency, the question of whether voice disorder patients use their pauses and breath groups properly should be considered carefully in evaluation and intervention.
