The bearing capacity of open-ended piles is affected by the degree of soil plugging, which is quantified by the incremental filling ratio, IFR. However, most design criteria for open-ended piles do not consider the variation of pile bearing capacity with IFR. In this study, new design equations for calculating the pile base and shaft load capacities, based on IFR value of the pile, were proposed using the results of model pile tests. A full-scale pile load test was also conducted on fully instrumented open-ended pile driven into gravelly sand. The IFR for the pile was continuously measured during pile driving. In order to check the accuracy of predictions made with the proposed equations, the equations were applied to two examples, including the pile load test preformed in this study. Based on the comparisons with the pile load tests results, the proposed equations appear to produce satisfactory predictions.
Demand on pile foundation is rapidly increasing, as an investment for the social overhead capital getting enlarged in Korea. Steel piles are in general use in construction due to their workability and superior durability. But the recent global rise in steel price led the engineers to seeking for an economical alternative that still has equivalent characteristics as compared with the steel pile. In this regard a composite pile, in which steel suitable to resist the tensile stress are used in the upper part of the pile, while less expensive PHC pile is adopted in the lower part of the pile where axial stress should prevail, was studied and both pile loading test and load transfer test were performed for the piles which have been constructed for the foundation of a bridge in Korea. These test results and some theories already issued were compared, and it was shown that p-y nonlinear analysis gave rise to similar results.

The end bearing behavior of piles socketed in weathered/soft rock is generally dependent upon the rock mass conditions with fractures rather than the strength of intact rock. Therefore, a database which includes 13 load tests performed on cast-in-place concrete piles and soil investigation data at the field test sites was made first, and new empirical relationships between the base reaction modulus of piles in rock and rock mass properties were developed. No correlation was found between the compressive strengths of intact rock and the base reaction modulus of weathered/soft rock. The ground investigation data regarding the rock mass conditions (e.g. Pressuremeter modulus and limit pressure, RMR, RQD) was found to be highly correlated with the base reaction modulus, showing the coefficients of correlation greater than 0.7 in most cases. In addition, the applicability of existing methods for the end bearing capacity of piles in rock was verified by comparison with the field test data.

The end bearing capacity of rock-socketed drilled shafts under axial loading is investigated by Hoek-cell tests and a numerical analysis. From the test results, it was found that the ultimate end bearing capacity ($q_{max}$) was influenced by pile diameter, rock mass modulus and the spacing of discontinuity. A new ultimate end bearing capacity method is proposed by taking end bearing capacity influence factors, including rock mass discontinuity, based on field data. Through comparisons with other field data, the proposed $q_{max}$ method represents a definite improvement in the prediction of ultimate end bearing capacity of rock-socketed drilled shafts.
It is generally considered that differences of axial stiffness between exiting pile and reinforcing pile affect the load distribution ratio during vertical extension remodeling. But there are few cases to verify the effect of stiffness by field load test on load distribution ratio in Korea. In this paper, a series of load tests for micropiles were carried out to evaluate the effect of axial stiffness on the load distribution ratio. First, different types of micropiles were constructed so that conventional micropiles simulated existing piles and waveform micropiles simulated reinforcing piles. Secondly, load tests were performed to evaluate the stiffness of each piles. After then, the raft was installed to make a piled raft system and load tests were applied on foundation to verify the effect of axial stiffness on the load distribution ratio. The experimental results show that the stiffness of waveform micropiles were 2.5 times larger than that of conventional micropiles, and the load distribution ratio between existing and reinforcing piles was increased according to axial stiffness of piles.
Based on pile load test results for various pile types that were constructed in-situ and pile design data of prebored PHC piles, the ratio of skin friction to total capacity (SRF) was analyzed. A SRF distribution range from the pile load test results for pilot test prebored PHC piles was 42~99% regardless of relative penetration lengths, soil types, and pile load test types. However, a SRF distribution range from the pile design data for prebored PHC piles was 20~53% regardless of relative penetration lengths and pile diameters. Also, a SRF distribution range from the restrike dynamic pile load test results for pretest working prebored PHC piles was a scattered range of 4~83% regardless of pile diameters, relative penetration lengths and soil types. The scattered SRF of pretest working piles was caused to the quality control issue on the filling of cement milk around piles and this quality control issue should be improved. The average SRF calculated by the current design method was estimated to be 2.2 times lower than the average SRF of the pilot test piles. It is because skin friction resistance is calculated at a very low level. Therefore, a new design method for skin friction will be proposed based on this study.
For long piles driven in deep clay deposits, it is difficult to estimate the ultimate bearing capacity due to large resistance induced by long embedded depth, and also the load transfer curve due to large residual load induced by negative skin friction, even with the performance of pile load tests. In this research, a hi-directional load test on a PHC pile driven in deep soft deposit was performed in order to evaluate the tip and shaft resistances separately, which are feasible to estimate the ultimate bearing capacity of the pile. Residual load of the pile was determined by continuous monitoring of pile strains after the pile installation. The true resistance and true load-movement curve of the pile were properly estimated by taking account of the residual load. A model far behavior of the shaft resistance vs. movement was also proposed, which includes the effects of residual load based on the experiment. Consequently, it was proved that the residual load should be taken into consideration for correctly analyzing load test results of piles in deep clay deposits.
