  • A primitive equation numerical model driven only by $M_2$ tide is used to examine role of tide in the temperature and velocity fields of Deukryang Bay. The numerical model reproduces several features of the observational temperature fields such that the isotherms tend to be parallel to the coast in the bay, and the colder water exists at the right hand side in the bay. The horizontal temperature and velocity fields in the model are dominantly influenced by bottom topography. The model also shows that the surface colder water in the bay is accompanied by strong-alongshore current during the flood tide. An investigation for baroclinicity in the bay by additional numerical experiment indicates that the baroclinirity in velocity field is very weak. The model, however, did not reproduce a stratification in the observation, implying that the model needs to add other semi-diurnal components such as $S_2,\;O_2\;or\;K_2$ tides to $M_2$ tide.

  • The age and spawning characteristics of Iksookimia pacifica were investigated in this study to provide baseline data for its ecological characteristics in the Bukcheon (stream), Goseong-gun, Gangwon-do, Korea from January to December, 2013. Age groups of I. pacifica (female) estimated by the frequency distribution of total length in the spawning season indicated that the 30~49 mm group is 1 year old, the 50~74 mm group is 2 years old, the 75~99 mm group is 3 years old, the 100~124 mm group is 4 years old, and the 130~160 mm group is $5{\leq}$years old. The sex ratio (♂/♀) was 0.63, and females were 30~60 mm larger than males. The lamina circularis at the base of pectoral fins in males as a secondary sexual character was created at the 13th month after hatching. The spawning season according to the gonadosomatic index (GSI) was July to August (main spawning season in July) with water temperatures of $20{\sim}25^{\circ}C$. The average number of eggs was $2,503{\pm}1,337$ with a diameter of $1.11{\pm}0.04mm$ in mature eggs.

  • The variation of flow pattern caused by the topographical change of Kwangyang bay, is analyzed using the numerical tidal model for the depth-integrated two- dimensional long wave equation. The results of study are as follows. Due to pier construction, the area of water surface is deceased and the water inflow into the Kwangyang bay is reduced. For this result, at the outer bay of Myo island, the tidal range is slightly increased. And at the inner bay, water level is dropped generally, and especially at the time of low water tide, the phenomena of water level drop obviously appears. According to the variation pattern, flow velocities is lower than those of non-construction condition over the Kwangyang bay. But at the channel(from Kwangyang east stream) flowing into the east Kwangyang bay, for the contraction of channel profile, flow velocity is increased. The study based on the 100 year frequency design flood discharge from Sueocheon(river) and Dongcheon(river) which are flowing into the bay and Seomjin River flowing along the boundary of the bay is also performed. During the spring tide condition, the results showed the rise of water level about 1.2 m at Seomjin River Estuary and 0.3 m at inner bay is occurred.

  • The growth of the pearl oyster, Pinctada fucata was compared between two areas, Hansan Bay and Ilkwang located in southern part and in southeast part of Korean waters respectively, from November 1984 to June 1986. The pearl oysters in Hansan Bay grew from 2.53cm to 6.07 cm in shell length in 17 months, while those in Ilkwang grew from 2.53 cm to 4.07 cm in 19 momths. Shell height, shell breadth and total weight of the pearl oysters in Hansan Bay also showed more rapid growth than those in Ilkwang. The relative growth of shell breadth to shell length in specimens between Hansan Bay and Ilkwang showed a significant difference indicating that the value in Ilkwang is bigger than that in Hansan Bay, It is also suggested that Hansan Bay is a good area for the growth and Ilkwang, an area worth wintering of the pearl oyster.

  • An estuary is very important that the seawater and the freshwater meet and they formed wide foreshore and estuarine which is used as the habitat of various living thing and spawning bed of fish. Masan bay is typical closing bay in Korea. It is located 9 km from the open sea and most inside of Jinhae bay. The width of bay entrance is less than 1 km, where the flow velocity is very low. The large scale industrial complex of Masan bay is located in near Masan and Changwon city whose population is about 100 million. Because of low tidal velocity, the pollutants from the land are accumulated, which makes the water quality worse in Masan bay. The purpose of this study is to analyze the various hydraulic characteristics using RMA-2 model. The advection and diffusion of pollutant is also simulated using RMA-4 model according to the inflow of Changwon-stream and Nam-stream. The hydraulic simulations include the effect of tide which can be characterized by the tide data of Masan bay tide observatory.

  • Rubber hose assembly for automotive hydraulic brake during operation is subject to combined stresses of cyclic pressure, cyclic bending and torsion as well as thermal load. The rubber hose is composed of ethylene-propylene diene monomer(EPDM) rubber layers reinforced by polyvinyl acetate(PVA) braided fabrics. A durability tester with loading rigs for inducing the above cyclic stresses was used to investigate failure mechanisms in the rubber hose assembly. Failure examination was performed at every 100 thousands cycles of bending and torsion. Hose samples were sectioned with a diamond-wheel cutter and then polished. The polished surface was observed by optical microscope and scanning electron microscope (SEM). Some interfacial delamination with a length of about 1mm along the interface between EPDM rubber and PVA fabrics was shown at the test cycles of 400,000. The delamination induced some cracking into the outer rubber skin layer to leading the final rupture of the hose.

  • Some coastal oceanographic investigations in Kwang Yang Bay were carried out bimonthly from April to September (The first half period of the research project) in 1974. The behaviour of the waters, distributions of water temperature and salinity and diffusion characteristic by dye release experiments in the bay are studied for the problems of practical importance in connection with water pollution. Velocities and directions of tidal currents at five fixed stations were observed. And dye diffusion experiment was also carried out on the sea. According to the results from this study, the salinity of the water is lower, ranging from about $28\;\textperthousand\;to\;32\textperthousand$, on all over the surface in the bay with the cause that the fresh water flows in from the Sumjin river. Diffusivities in this sea by means of Rhodamine B diffusion elliperiment were $785.6\;{\times}\;10^2\;\textrm{m}^2/sec$ in major axis, $15.6\;{\times}\;10^2 \;\textrm{m}^2/sec$/sec in minor axis in the direction on patch after 30 minutes from the dye release.
