Effect of Trans-Membrane Pressure on Reversible and Irreversible Fouling Formation of Ceramic Membrane (막간차압이 세라믹막의 가역막오염과 비가역막오염 형성에 미치는 영향)

  • This study was carried out to investigate how reversible and irreversible fouling were distributed in the filtration using ceramic membrane of 300 kDa pore size for secondary effluent of wastewater. It was performed by calculating fouling as numerical method for diverse TMPs and measured F-EEM and SEC for raw water, treated water and backwashed water. Water quality was also checked to know whether treated water quality was stable or not. The results showed that reversible fouling formation was increased when lower TMP was applied and it is caused by protein like organic matters having higher molecular weights. The secondary wastewater effluent had diverse molecular weight materials, especially contaminants lower than 0.5 kDa and bigger than 12 kDa. Decreasing TMP induced contaminants above 12 kDa and below 1 kDa to become reversible fouling.

Effect of Media in Advanced Treatment of Sewage Using Submerged Membrane-Coupled Sequencing Batch Reactor (침지형 막결합 연속회분식 반응기를 사용한 하수의 고도처리에서 담체의 효과)

  • In the advanced treatment of sewage using the submerged membrane-coupled sequencing batch reactor (SMSBR) with media, the effect of media on the filtration performance and removal efficiency were investigated. Dosages of the media in the SMSBR were 10% based on working volume of reactor. As a control system, SMSBR without media and PAC, SMSBR with PAC (10 g/L) only, and SMSBR with media and PAC were also operated. The experimental results showed that there was no big difference observed in the removal efficiencies of COD, T-N, and T-P irrespective of the dosages of the media and PAC. But transmembrane pressure (TMP) of SMSBR with media increased slowly during the operation time, while that of SMSBR without media increased rapidly. Using SMSBR with media, it was possible to operate without the membrane cleaning during the 91 days. Using SMSBR with media only, after 80 days the average removal efficiencies of COD, T-N, and T-P were 95.0, 69.3%, and 51.4%, respectively.

Transmembrane Pressure of the Sinusoidal Flux Continuous Operation Mode for the Submerged Flat-sheet Membrane Bioreactor in Coagulant Dosage (침지식 평막 MBR 내 응집제 투여에 따른 사인파형 연속투과 운전 방식의 막간차압)

  • In this study transmembrane pressure (TMP) was measured with respect to operational time in order to estimate fouling of the submerged membrane in the membrane bioreactor(MBR). The microfiltration flat sheet module which has $0.02m^2$ of effective area and $0.15{\mu}m$ nominal pore size was submerged in the activated sludge solution of MLSS 5,000 mg/L. The permeate experiments were carried out simultaneously to compare TMP of the run/stop (R/S) with that of the sinusoidal flux continuous operation (SFCO). TMP for SFCO mode was up to 93% lower than that of R/S mode, and the effect of TMP drop reduced as permeate flux increased. Also, TMP of the SCFO mode was maintained below 40% of the limited operating TMP 55 kPa until the permeate operational time extended to longer than 5 times for the case as the coagulant $FeCl_3$ was dosed into the activated sludge solution with 500 mg/L concentration.

Membrane Fouling Models for Activated Sludge Cakes (활성슬러지 케이크의 분리막 오염 모델)

  • This experiment was carried out for a laboratory scale activated sludge bioreactor equipped with submerged flat sheet membrane using the synthetic wastewater. The membrane system for the activated sludge solution of MLSS 5,000 mg/L was operated with constant permeate flux by continuously permeating and periodically 10 minute-permeating/2 minute-resting modes, respectively. The transmembrane pressure was measured as the permeate flux increased from 10 to $25L/m^2{\cdot}hr$ under the constant air flowrate 0.25 L/min. Also, the complete blocking, standard blocking, intermediate blocking, incompressible cake and linear compressible cake fouling models were retrofitted for the experimental data in order to determine the state of the membrane fouling. Because the transmembrane pressure fluctuated as a pulse shape for every period of 10 minute-permeating/2-minute resting mode, the membrane fouling models were separately applied for the maximum and minimum connecting lines. The linear compressible cake fouling model for the activated sludge cakes was the best fitted with the experimental results from the above five models.

Transmembrane Pressure of Backwashing, Filtration/Relaxation and the Sinusoidal Flux Continuous Operation Modes for Submerged Plate Membrane (역세척, 여과/이완 및 사인파형 연속투과 운전방식에 따른 침지형 평막의 막간차압)

  • In this study, permeation experiments were conducted using naturally circulating spherical beads, backwashable plate membrane and the air supplied from the bottom of the MBR. The activated sludge solution was maintained at 8,000 mg/L of MLSS and compared transmembrane pressure (TMP) with respect to FR (filtration and relaxation), FR/BW (filtration and relaxation/backwashing), SFCO (sinusoidal filtration continuous operation) and SFCO/BW (sinusoidal filtration continuous operation/backwashing). As the backwashing flux decreased from 47 to $14L/m^2{\cdot}hr$, the TMP increased generally, but the TMP of FR system increased significantly comparing with SFCO. In addition, the backwashing method reduced more TMP comparing to the cleaning method using spherical beads, and it was confirmed that the operation method using the spherical beads and the backwashing simultaneously is more effective than each method.

  • Reuse feasibility of MBR effluent of S Electronic Company's organic wastewater as a LCD process water was investigated by a $32m^3/d$ pilot-scale RO membrane process. The effects of operating pressure and permeate flux at constant 85% recovery of RO membrane process using MBR effluent were analyzed for transmembrane pressure and period for CIP by membrane fouling as well as rejection of TOC and conductivity. MBR effluent requires additional treatment to meet the LCD process water quality criteria of TOC<1 mg/L and conductivity<$100{\mu}S/cm$ which is stringent as compared with those of conventional reuse water quality criteria. The RO process operated at 85% recovery with stepwise increasing of permeate fluxes from 12.5 LMH to 22.0 LMH was able to meet LCD process water quality criteria. However, the transmembrane pressure increased and the period of CIP decreased as increasing permeability fluxes due to fouling of RO membrane. The optimum operational conditions of RO membrane process were permeate fluxes of 16.5~18.5 LMH with operating pressure of $6.7{\sim}12.4kgf/cm^2$ and CIP period of 20~25 days at constant 85% recovery.

Optimum Operating Condition for Micro-Filtration Process as a Seawater Desalination Pretreatment (해수담수화 전처리로서 가압식 MF 공정의 최적 운전조건 도출)

  • The relation between performance maintenance conditions and those cost efficiency was studied to choose an optimum operating condition in the seawater desalination pretreatment system. A hollow fiber microfiltration module, which was developed with domestic technology, was tested with the various operating conditions such as chemically enhanced backwash cycles and design dosages of a cleaning chemical. Transmembrane pressure was measured to investigate membrane fouling status and cleaning degree. In addition, economic analysis was performed to compare water production costs by the operation condition. As a result, The operation mode III, chemically enhanced backwash at once a day with 100 mg/L of sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) was selected. The concurrent evaluation between membrane filtration performance and its economic analysis will be suitable to choose an efficient optimum condition.

Concentration of Vanadium in Jeju Groundwater Using Reverse Osmosis Processes (역삼투 공정을 이용한 제주 지하수의 바나듐 농축)

  • This study is to concentrate vanadium in Jeju groundwater using reverse osmosis processes, and to utilize the concentrate for vanadium water. Groundwater samples were taken from Wahyul, Ayum, and Seogwipo groundwater wells with different in vanadium content each other. Their vanadiuln concentrations were 31.8, 44.5, and 53.0 ppb, respectively. The rejection coefficients of every component in groundwater were increased with the increase of TMP At the TMP of $8 kg_f/cm^2$, the rejection coefficients of vanadium, sodium, potassium, aluminium, iron, and barium were $97.4%{\sim}99.0%,\;97.7%{\sim}97.8%,\;98.0%{\sim}98.3%,\;94.8%{\sim}97.5%,\;88.0%{\sim}96.4.0%$, and $97.9{\sim}98.0%$, respectively. And those of magnesium, calcium, chromium, mauganese, and strontium in three groundwater were more than 99.0% at the same TMP. It was possible that vanadium contents of Wahyul, Ayum and Seogwipo groundwater were concentrated into 58.6, 118.9, and 165.1 ppb, respectively, by 6 stages treatment at the recovery ratio of 15%. And these concentrated water (vanadium water) did not exceed the permissible drinking water standards.

Transmembrane Pressures with Respect to Backwashing and Sinusoidal Flux Continuous Operation Modes for the Submerged Hollow Fiber Membrane in the Activated Sludge Solution (활성슬러지 수용액 내 침지식 중공사막의 역세척 및 사인파형 연속투과 운전방식에 따른 막간차압)

  • In this study transmembrane pressure (TMP) was measured with respect to operational time by applying the sinusoidal flux continuous operation (SFCO) for the hollow fiber membrane. The hollow fiber module which has $100cm^2$ of effective area and $0.45{\mu}m$ nominal pore size was submerged in the activated sludge solution of MLSS 5,000 mg/L. The critical permeate flux was measured as $26.6L/m^2{\cdot}hr$ by the method of continuous flux step change. TMPs of the filtration/relaxation (FR), FR with backwashing (FR/BW) and SFCO modes were measured. The SFCO mode was more effective than FR and FR/BW modes below the critical permeate flux such as 15, 20 and $25L/m^2{\cdot}hr$. However, the FR/BW was confirmed as more effectively fouling controlled mode than SFCO mode above the critical permeate flux.
