Direct shear tests are perfromed for artifical joint models made of cement with 25 types of different strength and roughness. The tests consist of the multi-stage test which is a common test method for a single joint plane and the test method suggested by ISRM. Then, not only the differences of friction angles between the two test methods are compared, but is the effectiveness of the multi-stage test investigated. The average of friction angles measured from the multi-stage test is $6.4^{\circ}$ lower than that from the ISRM test. Although the strength and roughness of samples vary, the differences of friction angles between the two test methods are constant. The relationship between the shear stress and the normal stress measured from the multi-stage test is well correlate with the Patton's equation. Whereas, the Barton's equation is best fitted with those measured from ISRM test.

This study aims to develop a FE Model to simulate dissimilar friction stir welding and to address its potential for fundamental analysis and practical applications. The FE model is based on Coupled Eulerian-Lagrangian approach. Multiphysics systems are calculated using explicit time integration algorithm, and heat generations by friction and inelastic heat conversion as well as heat transfer through the bottom surface are included. Using the developed model, friction stir welding between an Al6061T6 plate and an AZ61 plate were simulated. Three simulations are carried out varying the welding parameters. The model is capable of predicting the temperature and plastic strain fields and the distribution of void. The simulation results showed that temperature was generally greater in Mg plates and that, as a rotation speed increase, not the maximum temperature of Mg plate increased, but did the temperature of Al plate. In addition, the model could predict flash defects, however, the prediction of void near the welding tool was not satisfactory. Since the model includes the complex physics closely occurring during FSW, the model possibly analyze a lot of phenomena hard to discovered by experiments. However, practical applications may be limited due to huge simulation time.

To improve the total efficiency of centrifugal compressor, it is necessary to reduce the disk friction loss, which is defined as the power loss. In this study, the disk friction loss due to the axial clearance and the surface roughness effect is analyzed and proposed the new empirical equation for the reduction of the disk friction loss. The rotating reference frame technique and the 2-equation k-${\omega}$ SST model using commercial CFD code FLUENT is used for the steady-state analysis of the centrifugal compressor impeller. According to CFD results, the disk friction loss of the impeller is more affected by the surface roughness than the change of the axial clearance. For the minimization of the disk friction loss on the centrifugal compressor impeller, the magnitude of the axial clearance should be designed to the same size compare with theoretical boundary layer thickness and the surface roughness should be minimized.

This study provided the analytical model describing the friction-induced noise in the ball joint system under the edge loading condition. The frictional and conformal contact kinematics between the spherical bearing and the hemispherical socket was derived and the dynamic equations of the perturbed motion were established. The numerical results revealed that the bending modes of the ball joint system can become unstable due to friction, and the axial load and contact stiffness strongly influenced the dynamic instability. In contrast, the tilting angle of the socket was not found to significantly contribute to the dynamic instability of the ball joint.

To reduce the vibration levels, additional dissipation elements such as dry friction dampers are sometimes integrated into bladed disk assembly. In this study, forced response analysis systems for a tuned bladed disk with friction dampers were developed and verified. For the efficient nonlinear vibration analysis, multi-harmonic balanced method and cyclic boundary condition were used. Also, mode shapes obtained using fictitious mass method were used to describe the motion of the structures with the concentrated structural nonlinearity, friction damper. The relative convergence of fictitious mass and traditional unconstrained modes were compared.

In this paper, a model-based stick-slip compensation for the micro-positioning is proposed using an enhanced stick-slip model based on statistical rough surface contact model. The smart structure is comprised with PZT (lead (Pb) zirconia (Zr) Titanate (Ti)) based stack actuator incorporating with the PID (Proportional-Integral-Derivative) control algorithm, mechanical displacement amplifier and positioning devices. For the stick-slip compensation, the elastic-plastic static friction model is used considering the elastic-plastic asperity contact in the rough surfaces statistically. Mathematical model of system for the positioning apparatus was derived from the dynamic behaviors of structural parts. PID feedback control algorithms with the developed stick-slip model as well as feedforward friction compensator are formulated for achieving the accurate positioning performance. Experimental results are provided to show the performances of friction control using the developed positioning apparatus.

A fully coupled thermo-mechanical model is adopted to study the temperature distribution and the material deformation in friction stir welding(FSW) process. Rotational speed is most important parameters in this research. Three dimension results under different process parameters were presented. Result indicate that the maximum temperature is lower than the melting point of the welding material. The higher temperature gradient occurs in the leading side of the workpiece. The maximum temperature can be increased with increasing the tool angular velocity, rpm in the current numerical modeling. In this research ABAQUS Ver.6.7 is to analyze a fully coupled thermo-mechanical model. ALE(Arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian) finite element formulation is used for the large deformation in FSW process and using the Mass scaling for the analysis time efficiency.

Under unlubricated condition, the friction and wear tests of silicon nitride and zirconia manufactured by HIP were carried out at room temperature. The wear resistance of silicon nitride was superior to that of zirconia under low load, whereas the wear resistance of zirconia was superior to that of silicon nitride under high load. Wear model of ceramic was suggested by the microscopic SEM observation of worn surfaces and debris. Theoretical analysis and discussions based on linear fracture mechanics were made out about this ceramic wear model. From the theoretical analysis, a new nondimensional parameter, Scf, was introduced to estimate wear rate of ceramics. This new nondimentional parameter consists of contact pressure, surface defect of contact material, frictional coefficient and fracture toughness.

This work is concerned with the development of an analytical model to predict the friction in longitudinally finned rod bundles. Such bundles are currently considered in KMRR design. The present model assumes the validity of the Law of the Wall over entire flow area. The flow channel area is divided into the interfin region and a number of element channels, and the algebraic form of the Law of the Wall is integrated over each element channel and interfin region to yield an analytic expression for the pressure drop. The model reasonably predicts the 6 fin KMRR data, and overpredicts the 8 fin data about 15 percent.
