  • The wear of railway track affects loss of rough ride, noise or vibration of train and traveling safety. Moreover as the track is worn away, this promotes destruction of structural mechanism of rail track which can bring about increasing of rail track maintenance cost drastically. For this reason, it is very important and interested research subject to design railway track structure and to analyse train movement mechanism based on systematic analysis of the reasons causing rail wear possible in real field. In this research, for the efficient maintenance, Life Cycle Performance of rail track and maintenance characteristics are computed considering some track components such as track type, contracting type, sleeper type and roadbed type. Time - Wear probabilistic distribution relationship as well as multiple regression analysis based on time, curvature and wear data are computed to predict the service life remainder of railway track and to be adapted to safety assessment.

  • In this study, the effect of the pre-mild wear mode test condition on the subsequent severe wear behavior of carbon steel has been investigated when the wear mode is varied according to the sliding speed change during sliding contact. Two sliding speeds of 0.3 m/s and 3 m/s for the mild wear mode test have been chosen and a sliding speed of 1 m/s for the severe wear mode test. A mild wear mode test at two different sliding speeds has been carried out during the severe wear mode test and total sliding distance of the mild wear mode test has been changed at this time. As a result, it could be found that the wear rate of carbon steel under the severe wear mode test after performing a pre-mild wear mode test is significantly reduced, compared with that before performing. However, its wear rate was slightly higher than that under the mild wear mode test. Oxides produced during the pre-mild wear mode test have been found to play a significant role in reducing the wear rate under the subsequent severe wear mode test. In particular, it was found that the effect of a pre-mild wear mode test performed at the sliding speed of 3 m/s has more rapid and the reduction in the wear rate was greater than thst at the sliding speed of 0.3 m/s.

  • In this study, the effects of the electron beam irradiation on the thermal behavior and the abrasion properties of the glass fiber reinforced nylon 12 was investigated. The electron beam irradiation was carried out over a range of irradiation dose from 100 to 600 kGy with additive crosslinking agents such as triallyl cyanurate (TAC), triallyl isocyanurate (TAIC) and trimethylolpropane trimethacrylate (TMPTMA) for enhancing the crosslinking effects. The gel contents were increased dramatically above 200 kGy. It was verified that the degree of crosslinking depends on the radiation dose. The decreases of the melting temperature and the area of endothermic peak were observed as increasing the absorbed dose in the results of DSC analysis. The enhanced thermal stability was confirmed by the increases of decomposition temperature by electron beam irradiation. Furthermore, the negative deviations of the abrasion loss and the abrasion coefficients confirmed the improvement of the abrasion properties of irradiated nylon 12, as evidenced by SEM observation on the abrasion surfaces. The addition of the crosslinking agents to nylon 12 during effectively improved the thermal behavior and the abrasion properties of nylon 12 by the electron beam irradiation.

  • In this work, the effect of carbon nanofiber (CNF) on thermal properties, and friction and wear behavior of CNF/PMMA composites were examined. While thermal properties of the composites were investigated with differential scanning calorimetry, thermograyimetric analyzer, and dynamic mechanical analyzer friction and wear behaviors were examined using a friction and wear tester. The glass transition temperature (Tg), integral procedural decomposition temperature (IPDT), storage modulus (E'), and tan ${\delta}$ appeared at higher temperatures with increasing CNF content, which were probably attributed to the presence of strong interactions between the carbonaceous fillers and the PMMA resins matrix. The wear loss in the composites decreased at 0.1 wt% CNF and then increased with 5-10 wt% CNF content. This was due to the existence of large aspect ratio CNF in PMMA which led to an alignment of PMMA chains and an increase of mechanical interlocking, resulting in the formation of crosslinked structures between CNF and PMMA in the composite.

  • In this study, sliding wear tests were conducted to investigate the effects of tempered hardness on the sliding wear behavior of bearing steel. At a sliding speed of 0.3 m/s, the wear resistance of bearing steel with a tempered hardness of HRC 54 was superior to that with HRC 62. It was found that bearing steel with HRC 54 showed a strong tendency for the occurrence of oxidation wear at that speed, compared to that with HRC 62. This would be due to the troostitic structure of bearing steel with HRC 54, which is highly susceptible to corrosion. In this context, it is considered that sliding wear behavior could be affected by the corrosion resistance of the material.

  • The wear behavior as the hardness of the sliding elements on the dry wear has been investigated using a disc on disc configuration. The materials of the specimens are used as ten kinds along their hardness. In this study, both upper and lower specimens have been used the same materials. Using experimental data, we figured the relationship between wear coefficient and friction coefficient, and the relationship between wear coefficient and friction temperature. Also we combined friction temperature and friction coefficient instead of wear coefficient. We substituted this into wear equation of Archard. The result had been derived a newly wear equation in disc on disc wear system.

  • The effect of matrix phase (austenite, pearlite, martensite) on the low stress abrasion resistance in the chromium-carbide-type high Cr white iorn hardfacing weld deposites has been investigated. In order to examine matrix phase, a series of alloys with different matrix phase by changing the ratio of Cr/C system by heat treatment were employed. The alloys were deposited twice on a mild steel plate using self-shielding flux cored arc welding process. The low stress abrasion resistance of the alloys against sands was measured by the Dry Sand/Rubber Wheel Abrasion Test(RWAT). Even though formation of pearlite phase in the matrix showed higher hardness than that of austenite, there was no observable difference in wear resistance between the pearlite and austenite phase for the same amount of chromium-carbide in the matrix. On the other hand, the formation of martensitic phase,, from heat treated austenitic alloys (high content of Cr), enhanced wear resistance due to its fine secondary precipitates.
