  • This paper was undertaken to analyze the morphology of wear debris for operating condition evaluatio of lubricated machine surfaces. The lubricating wear test was carried out under different experimental conditions using tile wear test device was made in our laboritory and wear testing spcimen of the pin on disk type was rubbed in paraffine series base oil, by varying specimen, applied load, sliding distance. The four shape parameters (50% volumetric diameter, aspect, roundness and reflectivity) to describe morphology of wear debris have been developed and are outlined in tile paper. A system using such techniques promises to obviate the need for subjective, human interpretation of particle morphology in machine condition monitoring

  • The wear particles are relative to the failure and the life of machine elements directly. But it is not laid down to calculate shape parameters of wear particle. To analyze a variation of distributed characteristics of wear particles on moving conditions, its shape parameters such as diameter and roundness were calculated the quantitative values by digital image processing, and had to be defined the effective method of using those data. Up to the present, the shape parameters have been used simply into the average values. But these values are not effective to analyze a variation of distributed characteristics of occurred wear particles on moving conditions. In this study, the relative histograms of shape parameters of wear particles were used for the purpose of analyzing the distribution of wear particles in various conditions. The results showed that the relative histogram of shape parameters can be effectively represented to study a wear mechanism.

  • The friction behavior of a 60-${\mu}m$-thick anodic aluminum oxide (AAO) film having cylindrical nanopores of 45-nm diameter was investigated as a function of impregnated oil viscosity ranging from 3.4 to 392.6 cSt. Reciprocating ball-on-flat sliding friction tests using a 1-mm-diameter steel ball as the counterpart were carried out with normal load ranging from 0.1 to 1 N in an ambient environment. The friction coefficient significantly decreased with an increase in the oil viscosity. The boundary lubrication film remained effectively under all test conditions when high-viscosity oil was impregnated, whereas it was easily destroyed when low-viscosity oil was impregnated. Thin plastic deformed layer patches were formed on the worn surface with high-viscosity oil without evidence of tribochemical reaction and transfer of counterpart material.

  • Environmental factors affect parts of the automobile. When dust particles are embedded, specially, friction and wear of the rubber-seal in automobile chassis system are increased. Increase in friction and wear leads to weakness of component and reduction of mechanical life. In this study, the wear characteristics of rubber-seal for inflow of dust particles are investigated. Silica($SiO_2$) and alumina($Al_2O_3$) particles are used as a dust particle because these particles are main elements of dust particles. The sliding wear tester are used for investigate the wear characteristics of rubber-seal. If the single dust particle($SiO_2$) is embedded in the rubber-seal component, the influence of dust particle size is more than that of inflow rate on the wear characteristics of rubber-seal. If the mixed dust particles are embedded in the rubber-seal component, the wear rate is increased as the rate of alumina that has a bigger hardness is increased. If the mixed dust particles that have different hardness are embedded in the rubber-seal component, the influence of particle size is more than that of particle hardness.

  • The important design factors for designing solid lubricating of dynamic seal are tightness, wear resistance and lubricant films. In this study, the effect factors influenced solid lubricating properties of the graphite were analyzed and wear behaviour caused for various test conditions was compared with results obtained from reciprocating wear tests. Also the optimal conditions for formation of lubricant films were investigate to evaluate wear properties of graphite materials. The repeated procedure for the formation of wear particles and lubricant films, and the dissipation of lubricant films was estimated the wear mechanisms with changes of wear depth. Therefore the lubricant film of graphite seal was generated by adhesion of wear particles on the worn surface and it was very useful in wear characteristics.

  • In this study, a new sliding contact problem involving an elastomeric seal, a spherical particle and a hard coated steel counterface was modeled to investigate the detailed wear mechanisms related to the sealing surface. The model was also used to design the optimum coating conditions. A three-dimensional finite element contact problem was modeled and analyzed using the nonlinear finite element code, MARC. The deformed steel surface and stress distributions are presented for different coating layers and thicknesses. When the coating thickness is relatively small, the entrapped particle produces surface plastic deformations such as groove and torus. In addition, the sealing surface can be damaged by abrasive wear as well as fatigue wear. For a relatively thick and multi-layered coating, on the other hand, surface plastic deformation does not occur, and the amount of abrasive and fatigue wear is reduced. Therefore, the proposed contact model and results can be used in the design of various sealing systems, further intensive studies are required.

  • It necessarily follows that wear particles are generated through a friction and wear in a mechanical moving system. The wear particles are relative to the failure and the life of machine elements directly. To analyze the wear particle, its shape characteristics were calculated quantitative values such as diameter, roundness and fractal parameters by digital image processing. • Morphological analysis of wear particles in the lubricating oil is a very effective and versatile means of lubricant analysis for machine condition monitoring and fault diagnosis. The prospects for determining quantitative information about wear particle morphology have been considerably enhanced by recent developments reported in the application of image processing and analysis techniques. This study was undertaken to investigate the influence of oiliness agent and extreme pressure agent on the shape of wear particles. The wear test was performed under different experimental conditions with stearic acid, dibenzyl disulfide(DBDS) and tricresol phosphate(TCP) in paraffinic base oil. Wear particles characteristics were described using four shape parameters, namely 50% volumetric diameter, aspect, roundness and reflectivity. The results showed that the four shape parameters of wear particles depend on a kind of the additives. This analysis of wear debris with computer image processing techniques is sufficient to distinguish some types of wear debris. The wear volume of three kinds of the specimens are affected by the additives with boundary films.
