The precipitation test, which is the last step of magnesium recovery process consisting of three processes (pre-precipitation, selective dissolution of magnesium, precipitation) is performed to obtain magnesium sulfate powder from seawater. In the study, we succeed in precipitating the magnesium sulfate by adding acetone into the solution of magnesium over 4 times concentrated from seawater. The yield efficiency of magnesium sulfate increases with increasing pH and the ratio of added acetone. More than 99% of magnesium is obtained as magnesium sulfate hydrate ($MgSO_4{\cdot}6H_2O$) under the following conditions; pH 1.0 ~ 1.5, and the ratio of solution and acetone 1 : 1.5 (v:v). The acetone used in the precipitation process is recovered by the fractional distillation.
It is of importance to separate Ni(II) and Co(II) from Mg(II) in solution which was leached from nickel laterite ore. In order to investigate the possibility of separating Ni(II) and Co(II) from Mg(II), adsorption behavior of the three metals from individual and mixed sulfate solutions was investigated by using Diphonix resin. The concentration of each metal in solution was fixed at 100 ppm and the pH of the sulfuric acid solution was changed from 5 to 7. At ambient temperature, the adsorption behavior of the three metal ions followed Langmuir adsorption isotherm. The loading capacity of Diphonix resin for the three metal ions was obtained from the Langmuir isotherm. Since adsorption behavior of the three metal ions from the mixed solution was similar to each other, it was found to be difficult to separate Ni(II) and Co(II) from Mg(II) by using Diphonix resin.
Chloride ions in the alloy powder used as flux in Flux Cored Arc Welding (FCAW) can cause pores on the bead surface of the welding metal to cause defects, or chloride remaining in the alloy powder can cause corrosion of the metal. Combustion-ion chromatography is mainly used to quantify the chloride ions in alloy powder, but there is a limitation in that the equipment is expensive and requires a high degree of expertise. Therefore, this study aims to find an easy and accurate quantification method in the field by comparing combustion-ion chromatography (C-IC), which is mainly used for chloride ion quantification of alloy powder, X-ray fluorescence analysis (XRF), and potentiometric titration. In this article, magnesium-aluminum alloy powder is applied to the quantification of chloride ions because it is most commonly used as flux. This study confirmed that potentiometric titration can be applied to the quantification of chloride ions in the alloy powder in the industry field.

The performance degradation of concrete pavement by winter deicer is very serious in Korea, and its maintenance and rehabilitation brings a high expense. Therefore, a suitable method for rehabilitation of such concrete pavement and repair material of proper performance are required. In this study, the properties of compressive strength, ability to resist chloride ion penetration, and properties of dry shrinkage of magnesium phosphate ceramics were assessed to evaluate its applicability as a repair material for concrete pavement in Korea. As a result, the mortar flow showed a normal level of 190 mm, but the viscosity was high and the self-flow ability was poor. The setting time was 12 minutes, leading very rapid-hardening, and thus a prompt work was required. The compressive strength of mortar was 38.4MPa in 2 hours, 73.8MPa in 24 hours, and 111.0MPa in 28 days, showing a significant level. As a result of the test to chloride ion penetration resistance, mortar showed 143 Coulombs, and concrete showed 172.6 Coulombs, which fell under very low level. The drying shrinkage of MPC concrete in 40 days was below $60{\times}10-6$, and comparing with normal cement concrete, it showed the level below 1/10 of other concrete to secure an excellent volume stability. As above, magnesium phosphate ceramics has excellent strength performance, chloride ion penetration resistance, and volume stability, and this in the future shall be used in construction under the consideration of working time or workability, requiring further improvement for such performance.

We investigate the availability of $CO_2$ ocean storage by means of chemical conversion of $CO_2$ to the dissolved inorganic carbon (mainly the bicarbonate ion) in seawater. The accelerated weathering of limestone (AWL) technique, which is accelerating the natural $CO_2$ uptake process through the chemical conversion using limestone and seawater, was proposed as an alternative method for reducing energy-related $CO_2$ emission. The method presented in this paper is slightly different from the AWL method. It involves reacting $CO_2$ with seawater and quicklime obtained from alkaline wastes to produce the bicarbonate-rich solution over 100 times more than seawater, which could be released and diluted into the ocean. The released dense bicarbonate-enriched water mass could subside into the deeper layer because of the density flow, and could be sequestrated stably in the ocean.

Magnesium thin films for marine engine parts such as the engine block and the cylinder head cover etc. were prepared on the magnesium alloy(AZ91D) substrate by Thermo-electron activated Ion-plating method. The influence of gas pressure and substrate bias voltages on the crystal orientation and morphology of the films was investigated with X-ray diffraction and field emission scanning electron microscope(FE-SEM), respectively. Moreover, the effect of crystal orientation and morphology of the magnesium films on the its hardness property was investigated as well. From the results, the hardness of the films was increased in Ar gas pressure due to the grain boundary strengthening and occlusion effects.
The purpose of this study was to develop a separation method of Zn(II), Cu(II) and Mg(II), by ion exchange chromatography using cation exchange resion (Dowex 50w${\times}$8, 80-100 mesh) and anion exchange (Amberlite IRA-400). Ion exchange resions were packed into 25 ${\times}$ 2cm ID column and flow rate was controlled to 0.30 ml/min. Good eluents for separation of nonferrous metal ions such as Zn(II), Cu(II), Mg(II) were as follow: 0.5M $NaNO_3$ (pH 3.1), 0.2~0.5M HCl + 50~60% Acetone, and 1M HAc + 0.1M NaAcf(pH 3.7) aqueous solution. The mixed solution of 0.1M NaAc(pH 3.7), 0.5M HCl + 50% Acetone were found to be the best eluent for step elution. Analysis of metals were determined by atomic absorption spectrophotometer. In addition, separated Zn(II) fraction was obtained by eluted with 0.12N HCl and 1.5N $NH_4OH$ aqueous solution. This solution was titrated by the E. D. T. A.

In these days, there are increasing demands for weight reduction in many industrial fields including marine industries. Therefore, magnesium thin films for lightweight materials were prepared on magnesium alloy substrate. The influence of gas pressure and substrate bias voltages on the crystal orientation and morphology of the films was determined by using X-ray diffraction and FE-SEM, respectively. And the effect of crystal orientation and morphology of the magnesium thin films on corrosion behavior was estimated by measuring electro-chemical anodic polarization curves in deaerated 3% NaCl solution. From the results, corrosion resistance of Mg thin films was improved by controlling the crystal orientation and morphology of the films with effective use of plasma ion plating technique.
