  • A lithium ion battery with polymer electrolyte is expected as a safe and long cycle life battery. This paper reports primarily the recent development results of a solid polymer electrolyte, which is a key factor of the secondary battery system, that has been obtained during the process of the development of a polymer type lithium battery. As a successful result of the solid polymer electrolyte. The ionic conductivity of the solid polymer electrolyte, which is composed of polyacrylonitrile and $LiClO_4\;with\; Al_2O_3$ dissolved as the supporting electrolyte, has been confirmed to be $2.3\times10^{-4} S/cm$ at room temperature.

  • In this study, carbothermal reduction method was employed to synthesis Sn-Sb alloy powders from chief metal oxides with ultrafine sizes. The Sn-Sb powders consisting of ultrafine particles were formed at $800{\sim}900^{\circ}C$ by reduction of oxides. Those powders have high initial discharge capacities ($570{\sim}637\;mAh/g$) and discharge capacities of those powders maintain initial capacity after 20 cycle due to existence of ultrafine particles in powders and alloying effect of Sn-Sb.

  • For lithium secondary microbattery anode, the tin oxide thin films with Si addition (0, 2, 6, 10, 20 ㏖%) were prepared with R.F. magnetron sputtering at substrate temperature of 30$0^{\circ}C$ and Ar:O$_2$=7:3 atmosphere. As Si addition amount increased, Si-O bonding density increased and Sn-O bonding density decreased. The addition of optimum Si amount led the decrease of Sn oxidation state so that the irreversible capacity reduced and cycle characteristic enhanced during charge-discharge test. SnO$_2$films with 6 ㏖% Si had the highest reversible capacity of 700 mAh/g after 100 cycles.

  • The relationship between the diffusivity and electrochemical characteristics of lithium secondary battery with the modified Si anode material prepared in HF/$AgNO_3$ solution was investigated. The crystallographic structure and images of the modified porous Si and modified Si/Cu was examined using the X-ray diffraction, BET and SEM. To examine the effect of metal composite and pore size distribution according to chemical etching on the electrochemical characterization, the electrodes for half cells were prepared with the modified Si, modified Si/Cu, and modified Si/Cu annealed with $600^{\circ}C$. Our results showed that the chemical diffusivity of lithium ions was related to structure and resistance of Si/Cu composite anode material. The lithium diffusivity in modified silicon compound calculated from the CV was at the range of $1{\times}10^{-12}$ to $9{\times}10^{-16}cm^2/s$. The effects of modified silicon structure and resistance on the cycling efficiency were significant.

  • This study investigates the electrochemical characteristics of the hybrid cell that combined the advantageous characteristics of Li secondary battery and supercapacitor, high energy density and high power density, respectively. Electrochemical behaviors of the hybrid cell was characterized by charge/discharge, cycle and impedance tests. The hybrid cell using Li secondary battery and supercapacitor had better discharge capacity and cycle performance than that of using Li secondary battery only. Proper design of such a hybrid cell system is expected to result in substantial benefits to the well being of the Li secondary battery. The hybrid cell involving Li secondary battery for high energy density and supercapacitor for high power density may be the possible solution for future energy storage system.

  • This paper deals with a method for estimating the battery state-of-health(SOH) through electrical experiments and electrochemical modeling of lithium-ion secondary battery. In order to confirm the actual battery SOH through the battery electrical aging experiment, the current integration method was used. The SOH is estimated using the internal resistance value derived from the electrical experiment. Also, in electrochemical modeling, the SOH is estimated through the change of the SEI layer with the increase of the number of cycles. The new SOH is derived by applying weighting factor to the three methods of estimating SOH, including the actual battery SOH.

  • Vanadium oxide based materials have been studied as novel negative electrode materials in lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) because of their high specific capacity. In this study, potassium metavanadate ($KVO_3$) was synthesized and its electrochemical properties are evaluated as a negative electrode materials. The aqueous solution of $NH_4VO_3$ is mixed with a stoichiometric amount of KOH. The solution is boiled to remove $NH_3$ gas and dried to obtain a precipitate. The obtained $KVO_3$ powders are heat-treated at 300 and $500^{\circ}C$ for 8 h in air. As the heat treatment temperature increases, the initial reversible capacity decreases, but the cycle performance and Coulombic efficiency are improved slightly. On the contrary, the electrochemical performances of the $KVO_3$ electrodes are greatly improved when a polyacrylic acid (PAA) as binder was used instead of polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) and a fluoroethylene carbonate (FEC) was used as electrolyte additive. The initial reversible capacity of the $KVO_3$ is 1169 mAh/g and the Coulombic efficiency is improved to 76.3% with moderate cycle performance. The $KVO_3$ has the potential as a novel high-capacity negative electrode materials.

  • Amorphous carbons(neddle cokes), which are used as anode materials for lithium ion secondary batteries, were graphitized or heat-treated at high temperature in $N_2$ atmosphere and in Ar atmosphere, after adding $B_2O_3$. After then, using transmission eletron microscopy, their surface micro-structures and the formations and distributions of the second phases were analyzed. It was studied that such analyzed results were related to the cell capacities and efficiencies.
