  • An intelligent performance diagnostic program using the Neural Network was proposed for PW206C turboshaft engine. It was selected as a power plant for the tilt rotor type Smart UAV (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle) which has been developed by KARI (Korea Aerospace Research Institute). For teaming the NN, a BPN with one hidden, one input and one output layer was used. The input layer had seven neurons of variations of measurement parameters such as SHP, MF, P2, T2, P4, T4 and T5, and the output layer used 6 neurons of degradation ratios of flow capacities and efficiencies for compressor, compressor turbine and power turbine. Database for network teaming and test was constructed using a gas turbine performance simulation program. From application results for diagnostics of the PW206C turboshaft engine using the learned networks, it was confirmed that the proposed diagnostics algorithm could detect well the single fault types such as compressor fouling and compressor turbine erosion.

  • Gas turbine engine simulation program has been developed. In compressor and turbine, 2-D NS implicit code is used with k-$\omega$ SST turbulent model. In combustor, 0-D lumped method chemical equilibrium code is adopted under the limitations, the products are only 10 species of molecular and air-fuel is perfectly mixed state with 100% combustion efficiency at constant pressure. Fluid properties are shared on interfaces between engine components. The outlet conditions of compressor have been used as the inlet condition of combustor. The inlet condition of turbine comes from the compressor The back pressure in compressor outlet is transferred by the inlet pressure of turbine. Unsteady phenomena at rotor-stator in compressor and turbine is covered by mixing-plane method. The state of engine can be determined only by given inlet condition of compressor, outlet condition of turbine, equivalence ratio and rotating speed.

  • The Korean government has designated speed-limit zones and speed limits in 19 ports and 3 routes to ensure safe navigation and transportation. However, the speed limit differs from port to port, no practical means of management exist. This often leads to violation of the speed limit. Additionally, ship collisions due to human error continue to occur. First, the study analyzed marine accidents that occurred at trade ports and fairways. The result of the analysis revealed the occurrence of 1344 accidents (average 269 cases per year) from 2014 to 2018. Five hundred sixty three accidents involved fishing boats, whereas, merchant vessels were involved in 508 cases. Second, the efficacy of the application of voice and message warnings to GPS plotters and electronic chart display and information system (ECDIS) was reviewed, and these were proposed as measures to inform vessel operators of the hazards of speed limit violation. Third, experts' opinions from relevant agencies and navigation system manufacturers were consulted and it was found that the proposed warning function was technically implementable. The findings are expected to help reduce human error among ship operators and establish a Korean e-navigation system.

  • In order to estimate the gas turbine engine performance precisely, the component maps containing their own performance characteristics should be needed. In this study a component map generation method which may identify compressor map conversely from a performance deck provided by engine manufacturer using genetic algorithms was newly proposed. As a demonstration example for this study, the PW 206C turbo shaft engine for the tilt rotor type Smart UAV (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle). In ordo to verify the proposed method, steady-state performance analysis results using the newly generated compressor map was compared with them performed by EEPP(Estimated Engine Performance Program) deck provided by engine manufacturer. And also the performance results using the identified maps were compared with them using the traditional scaling method. In this investigation, it was found that the newly proposed map generation method would be more effective than the traditional scaling method.

  • A dynamic simulation of a turbo-shaft engine was performed for analysis of transient-state and engine-starting characteristics using the MATLAB/SIMULINKTM. The turbo-shaft engine was modelled based on thermodynamic and rotor dynamic relations. The analysis of engine starting characteristics was performed by monitoring the rate of the pressure, temperature and mechanical torque changes along the engine stations by the torque input generated from the accessary power unit and transmitted to the power turbine. The simulation of the transient-state characteristics of the engine was performed under fuel flow rate increase from the steady-state condition. For the future study, engine control unit will be added to the basic turbo-shaft engine model to enhance capability of engine performance simulation.

When the performance analysis is performed at far away operation conditions from the design point, in case of use of e component map by the traditional scaling method, the error of the performance analysis results is greatly increasing. In the other hand, if in case of use of the compressor map generated by the proposed GAs scheme, the performance analysis results are closely met with those by the performance deck, EEPP.

  • In this paper, numerical analysis of the surface gas temperature on turbine blades has been performed to investigate the temperature profiles characteristics of a partial admission supersonic turbine driven by high temperature and pressure gas of pyro-starter with two different types of turbine blade edge shape. In order to examine the surface gas temperature on turbine blades at initial starting, computations tlave been carried out at several turbine rotational speeds in the range of $0{\sim}10,000$ rpm for each type of turbine edge shape. "Sharp" edge and "Round" edge types were taken as the turbine edge shape factor. As turbine rotational speed increased, the average temperature of turbine blades was further decreased. It was also found that the surface temperature of turbine blades with a sharp edge was lower than round-type edge turbine blades.

  • Usually piston or rotary engines are installed at UAV's under 100 kg payload class. Those engine are less expensive and easy to get, but they require higher operating and maintenance costs due to shorter life and unique fuel usage. They are also too noisy to operate in urban area and have too strong vibration to carry sophisticated payloads. On the contrary, a gas turbine engine has drawbacks like higher specific fuel consumption and weight to power ratio, even it has many operating and maintenance benefits. This study aims to design a small turboshaft engine with a recuperator to overcome those demerits. A tilt rotor UAV(TR-60) developed by KARI was chosen as an imaginary target aircraft, and engine power and size were derived from it. This paper describes engine requirements, design process, and initial reference point cycle design.

  • The easiest way to see the phenomena of compressor surge is to show the static and dynamic operation characteristic on the map. Its operation zone will be restricted by the surge limit and, static and transient process must have some margin for it. Effect of rotor moment of inertia, air/gas volumes and heat transfer are factors to cause the transition from the static line. In case a large volume such as heat exchanger exists in the system it will exert a substantial influence to dynamic characteristics. In the present paper, influence of air volume bled from the compressor exit on transient process is investigated with an example of an auxiliary power unit micro-turbine engine. Turbine mass, pressure ratio, rotation speed, power and moment are calculated based on mass and work conservation. Result from the present study can give guidance to design the control system. A computer program is developed to calculate the dynamic process using the MathCAD commercial software.
