A numerical study has been conducted on CO after burning and NO generation of the rocket plume as the cooling water injected to the rocket plume. The present study shows that the cooling water has a role of increasing the degree of CO after burning and reducing NO generation. However the effect varies as the injection configuration of the cooling water. When the cooling water is injected at the side of the plume, NO generation is dramatically reduced while the degree of CO after burning is relatively low. When the cooling water is injected at the side and the center of the plume, CO after burning is highly increased and NO generation is also dramatically reduced.

Spatial distribution of chemical species in flame is a important indicator understanding the flame structure and combustion characteristics, and optical emission spectroscopy has been widely used for the measurement because of its simple and non-intrusive methodology. In this study, we suggest the feasibility of the measurement of chemical species (OH radical) distribution in rocket plume using optical emission spectrometer which was developed for the spatially resolved measurement along the line-of-sight. In order to predict the ground state concentration of species from the measured emission intensity by optical emission spectrometer, we consider thermal and chemical excitation mechanisms in flame, and assume thermodynamic equilibrium for the thermally excited species. We also present the spatial resolution and the correction of collection characteristics of the optical emission spectrometer depending on object distance.

The oxidizer-rich preburner's combustion tests were fulfilled in the development process of staged combustion cycle rocket engines. The exhaust plume from an oxidizer-rich preburner is relatively transparent because combustion takes place in oxidizer rich state. During hot fire tests a still and infrared images were captured to visualize the plume structure, temperature distribution and so on. In addition, the exhaust plume was numerically investigated to figure out the detailed characteristics. The combustion was not considered for the numerical modeling, but the mixing of exhaust plume with circumstantial air was modeled by species transport model with several turbulence models. The inner structure of plume was configured out by the comparison of numerical results with experimental results, and the validity of applied numerical models was verified.

A computational analysis of nozzle flow characteristics and plume structure using Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations with $k-{\omega}$ SST turbulence model was conducted to examine performance of the supersonic nozzle employed in a small liquid-rocket engine for ground firing test. Computed results and experimental outcome of 2-D converging-diverging nozzle flow were compared for verifying the computational capability as well as the turbulence model validity. Numerical computations of 2-D axisymmetric nozzle flow was carried out with the selected model. As a result, flow separation with backflow appeared around the nozzle exit. This investigation was reported as a background data for the optimal nozzle design of small liquid-propellant rocket engine for ground test.
The Numerical study has been carried out to investigate the effects of chemical reaction and thermal radiation on the rocket plume flow-field at various altitudes. The theoretical formulation is based on the Navier-Stokes equations for compressible flows along with the infinitely fast chemistry and thermal radiation. The governing equations were solved by a finite volume fully-implicit TVD(Total Variation Diminishing) code which uses Roe's approximate Riemann solver and MUSCL(Monotone Upstream-centered Schemes for Conservation Laws) scheme. LU-SGS (Lower Upper Symmetric Gauss Seidel) method is used for the implicit solution strategy. An equilibrium chemistry module for hydrocarbon mixture with detailed thermo-chemical properties and a thermal radiation module for optically thin media were incorporated with the fluid dynamics code. In this study, kerosene-fueled rocket was assumed operating at O/F ratio of 2.34 with a nozzle expansion ratio of 6.14. Flight conditions considered were Mach number zero at ground level, Mach number 1.16 at altitude 5.06km and Mach number 2.9 at altitude 17.34km. Numerical results gave the understandings on the detailed plume structures at different altitude conditions. The diffusive effect of the thermal radiation on temperature field and the effect of chemical recombination during the expansion process could be also understood. By comparing the results from frozen flow and infinitely fast chemistry assumptions, the excess temperature of the exhaust gas resulting from the chemical recombination seems to be significant and cannot be neglected in the view point of performance, thermal protection and flow physics.
Multi plume effects on the base heating have been Investigated with a CFD program. As the flight altitude increases, the plume expansion angle increases regardless of the single or clustered engine. The plume interaction of the clustered engine makes a high temperature thermal shear in the center of four plumes. At low altitude, the high temperature shear flow stays in the center of plumes, but it increases up to engine base with the increasing altitude. At high altitude, the flow from plume to base and the flow from base into outer free stream are supersonic, which transfers the high heat in the center of plumes to the base region. The radiative heat of the clustered engine varies from 220 kW/m² to 469 kW/m² with increasing altitude while those of the single engine are 10 kW/m² and 43.7 kW/m². And the base temperature of the clustered engine varies from 985K to 1223K, and those of the single engine are 483K and 726K. This big radiative heat of clustered engine can be explained by the active high temperature base flow and strong plume interactions.
The base flow regions of a three-body sounding rocket containing multiple exhaust plumes were numerically investigated in three dimensions for a free stream Mach number of 2.7 at flight altitude 18.5 km. The flowfields were calculated using the full compressible Navier-Stokes equations with an one-equation turbulence model of Baldwin-Earth. The present calculations were executed based upon a chemically frozen, single perfect gas model assumption. Due to the symmetry of the three-body rocket of each single nozzle, only one fourth of the computational domain was considered for the analysis. The results indicate that a babe heating effect is not considerable due to the small expansion of the plumes. In the base, however, a low speed recirculating flow dominates the region.
Radiative heating of a liquid rocket base plane due to plume emission is numerically investigated. Calculation of flow and temperature fields around rocket nozzle precedes and thereby realistic plume shape and temperature distribution inside the plume are obtained. Based on the calculated temperature field, radiative transfer equation is solved by discrete ordinate method. The averaged radiative heat flux reaching the base plane is about $5kW/m^2$ at the flight altitude of 10.9km. This value is small compared with radiative heat flux caused by constant-temperature (1500K) plume emission, but it is not negligibly small. At higher altitude (29.8km), view factor between the babe plane and the exhaust plume is increased due to the increased expansion angle of the plume. Nevertheless, the radiative heating disappears since the base plane is heated to high temperature (above 1000K) due to convective heat transfer.

This paper describes a study on after-burning suppressant in a solid propellant to reduce the plume formed outside of rocket nozzles, which could expose the launch site and the flight track. The minimum smoke propellant to enhance the stealth ability was formulated in terms of the kinds and the effects of after-burning suppressant on the ballistic performance and the amount of primary smoke. A after-burning suppressant, $K_2SO_4$ of about 1.1% weight content was found to show profound reduction of the rocket plume, giving negligibly slight increase in pressure exponent of burning rate. Also minimum smoke propellant with less than 1.1% of $K_2SO_4$ corresponds to A-class satisfaction in primary smoke by AGARD standard.

Rocket noise generated from the exhaust plume produces the enormous acoustic loading, which adversely affects the integrity of the electronic components and payload (satellite) at liftoff. The prediction of rocket noise consists of two steps: the supersonic jet exhaust is simulated by a method of the Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD), and an acoustic transport method, such as the Helmholtz-Kirchhoff integral, is applied to predict the noise field. One of the difficulties in the CFD step is to remove the boundary reflection artifacts from the finite computation boundary. In general, artificial damping, known as a sponge layer, is added nearby the boundary to attenuate these reflected waves but this layer demands a large computational area and an optimization procedure of related parameters. In this paper, a cost-efficient way to separate the reflected waves based on the two microphone method is firstly introduced and applied to the computation result of a laboratory-scale supersonic jet noise without sponge layers.
