  • This study was carried out to investigate the effect of shading (50% or not) and pruning height (3cm, 6cm, and 9cm) of remained above-ground plant part on shoot emergence aspect, mortality rate, flowering and cut flower characteristics of two years old Gypsophila paniculata plants. Days to shoot emergence (80%) advanced, emerged shoot number increased and mortality rate surveyed on late October decreased in 50% shading treatment. In addition to, mortality rate decreased, as above-ground plant part was highly pruned. Blooming was earlier with highly pruning the remained above-ground pan and under non-shading condition than shading. Growth traits such flower stalk length, primary branches number, stem diameter, and cut flower yield were the best and also non-particulate rate and rosette formation rate were the lowest in pruning height of 9cm under non-shading condition.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the effect of ridge height (10 cm, 20 cm, 30 cm, and 40 cm) on the soil physical property, the growth and flowering characteristics of Gypsophila paniculata (cv 'Bristol Fairy') in the subalpine area. As ridge height got higher, the daily soil temperature, the soil moisture content, soil hardness, bulk density, and solid phase ratio were decreased, but porosity ratio was a little increased. In summer and autumn cultivation the blooming of ridge height 30 cm and 40 cm was slightly delayed, but their root activity, cut flower width, and yield were better than those of 10 to 20 cm ridges. And the mortality ratio of plants, rosette formation rate, and nonpaniculata inflorescence rate became lower.

  • Goodyera rosulacea, which is morphologically similar to G. repens, is described recently as a new species based on its distinct morphological characters such as rosette-formed leaves, short rhizome and habitat. To verify the taxonomic identity of G. rosulacea and its taxonomic relationship within Korean Goodyera taxa, sequences of the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region of nuclear ribosomal DNA and the trnL region of cpDNA from 24 accessions including 1 outgroup accession were analyzed. Aligned sequences were analyzed using maximum parsimony and distance method, and the taxonomic identity and the taxonomic relationships among the related taxa were estimated by the existence of private marker gene and the phylogenetic tree of the aligned sequences. Molecular data indicate that G. rosulacea gas several private marker genes and shows monophyly in phylogenetic trees of both ITS and trnL sequences. the pairwise distance between G. rosulacea and the orher taxa of Korean Goodyera was 3.49-6.68% for ITS region and 5.05-9.53% for trnL region, indicating that G. rosulacea could be treated as an independent species. Therefore, our molecular data support the taxonomic of G. rosulacea as a distinct species of Korea. In phylogenetic trees, G. rosulacea formed same clade with G. repens, which has similar morphological characters with G. rosulacea, and showed the lowest pairwise distance with G. repens among Korean Goodyera taxa. These molecular data sugguested that G. rosulacea and G. repens are closely related taxa.

  • To investigate the effect of night minimum temperature on growth and flower development in standard type chrysanthemum 'Baekina' during winter season, morphological characteristics and physiological disorders were compared with standard chrysanthemum 'Jinba'. Although the flower budding of 'Baekma' was delayed about 2 to the days compared with 'Jinba', the days to flowering of 54 to 59 showed no difference between the two cultivars. Flowering was delayed as minimum temperature decreased at night. The length and weight of cut flower decreased in the two cultivars as minimum temperature increased at night. In 'Baekina', the number of petals at 16 showed the highest values among other temperatures. Whereas there was no significant difference among the temperature treatments in 'Jinba'. Rosette occured only in 'Baekma', and the ratio was 11.1% at 14, 55.6% at 16, and 56.1% at 18. The inhibition of flower budding appeared only at 14 in the ratio of 17.3% in 'Baekma' and 4.0% in 'Jinba'.

  • This study investigated the effect of soil mulching materials and methods on weed occurring for the growth and flowering characteristics in Gypsophila plants cultivation. For mulching materials were used black polyethylene (PE) film, black polypropylene (PP), and green polypropylene, and these were mulched in both ridge and furrow (BRF) or only furrow, respectively. The weed was occurred total $146.2g/m^2/yr$ as dry weight in non-mulching, but $4.1{\sim}4.2g/m^2/yr$ in BRF mulching by black or green PP. Also weed control were yearly required 27.9 persons/10a in non-mulching, whereas 2.4 persons/10a in BRF mulching by black or green PP. Flower budding and blooming were roughly delayed in non-mulching and furrow mulching. Flowering characteristics such as flower stalk length, primary branches number, and stem firmness were remarkably improved in BRF mulching of black or green PP. Cut flower yield was increased on black BRF mulching or green PP in summer cultivation, while green PP BRF mulching showed better yield in in autumn cultivation. Mortality rate of Gypsophila plants after summer season was lowest as 12.4% in furrow mulching with black PP, followed by about 19.0% in green PP mulching, but highest as 39.0% in BRF mulching with black PE film. Rosette formation rate was lower in furrow than BRF mulching, and was lowest as 13.1% in BRF mulching with green PP, followed by 15.2~15.8% in BRF mulching with black PE film or black PP. So it was thought that BRF mulching with green PP was highly effective in weed control and improvement of yield and cut flower quality in Gypsophila plants cultivation.
