Although radiosity can represent diffuse reflections of the object surfaces by modeling energy exchange in 3D space, there are some restrictions for real-time applications because of its computation loads. Therefore, GPU(Graphics Processing Unit) based radiosity algorithms have been presented actively to improve its rendering performance. We implement the progressive refinement radiosity on GPU by G. Coombe in 3D scene that is constructed with HDR(High Dynamic Range) radiance map. This radiosity method can generate a photo-realistic rendering image in 3D space, where the synthetic objects were illuminated by the environmental light sources. In the simulation results, the rendering performance is analyzed according to the resolution of the texel in the environmental map and mipmaping. In addition, we compare the rendering results by our method with those by the incremental radiosity.
Double skin façade is known that several features affected the building energy and daylighting performance. That is why the envelope is able to consist of all architectural materials such as glass, aluminum, wood and insulation for vision of residents and workers in buildings. Its specifications is very diverse according to the building designers and building owners. In recent times, visual environment became a major focus and resulted in the development of cutting edge engineering of diverse glazing systems and shading devices by growing interests of friendly environment. Thus this research has evaluated the fluctuations of interior lighting and atmospheric conditions based on double skin facade systems. Especially in terms of daylighting environment as dependent on solar variations, this research provides quantitative analysis of interior lighting conditions and how it affects the living conditions as well as improve the design of interior spaces.
Daylight is one of the most critical factors that can be utilized for architectural spaces; compared to artificial light, it is a sustainable energy source without the cost of electric energy and offers a more natural feeling to the visitors in the building. To make the space quality better, many architects have tried to predict daylight performance during the design process. The aim of this study is to evaluate the daylight transmittance efficacies of the five shapes - Flat, Pyramid, Dome, Barrel Vault. Ridge - of skylights. The results of this study indicated that the differences of transmittance efficiency among various skylights were less than 4.6% except the flat shaped skylight. Therefore, this study shows that there were no big differences of the daylight transmittance efficacies among the shapes of skylights.
Daylighting is one of the major elements in architectural design. It also plays an important role in the museums focused on displaying artistic works. Many architects have tried to predict daylighting performances in exhibition spaces during the design process of museums. The aims of this study are to present the design methods using the computer program RADIANCE that is available for the evaluations of daylighting performances in indoor space and to help architects design daylighting systems for better exhibition spaces of museums. For this study, Seoul Museum of Art was chosen and it was evaluated the recommended illuminance and the impacts of direct sunlight under the conditions of overcast sky and clear sky with sun. According to simulation results, they indicated that the alternative toplight system(sawtooth shape) was more effective for daylighting of exhibition spaces than the existing toplight system(pyramid shape) and this study showed a method to evaluate daylighting effects in exhibition spaces with various shapes of toplight systems.
Daylight is an important factor which influences building energy efficiency and visual comfort for occupants. It is important to predict precise sky luminance at the early stages of design to reduce light energy in the building. This study predicted sky luminance distributions of standard sky model(CIE overcast sky, CIE clear sky) that was provided from the CIE(Commission internationale de $l^{\prime}{\acute{e}}clairage$). Afterward, result of sky luminance was compared and verified with simulation value of Radiance program. From the CIE overcast sky, zenith and horizon ratio is about 3:1. From the CIE clear sky, luminance value gets most high value around the sun. On the other hand, luminance value is the lowest in the opposite direction of the sun when angle is $90^{\circ}$ between the sun and sky element. As a result of comparing the calculation results with Radiance program, sky luminance prediction error rate is 0.4~1.3% when it is CIE overcast sky. Also, sky luminance prediction error rate is 0.3~1.5% when it is CIE clear sky. When compared with the results of radiance simulation, it was evaluated as fairly accurate.
In order to generate a photo-realistic synthesized image, we should reconstruct light environment by 3D analysis of scene. This paper presents a novel method for identifying the positions and characteristics of the lights-the global and local lights-in the real image, which are used to illuminate the synthetic objects. First, we generate High Dynamic Range(HDR) radiance map from omni-directional images taken by a digital camera with a fisheye lens. Then, the positions of the camera and light sources in the scene are identified automatically from the correspondences between images without a priori camera calibration. Types of the light sources are classified according to whether they illuminate the whole scene, and then we reconstruct 3D illumination environment. Experimental results showed that the proposed method with distributed ray tracing makes it possible to achieve photo-realistic image synthesis. It is expected that animators and lighting experts for the film and animation industry would benefit highly from it.
In computer graphics, there exist many studies about illumination and radiance for a realistic description of the 3D modeling and rendering. When we see a scene, the scene is lit by a source of light and the radiance of the points by a source in the scene. The radiance has direct light and glight component. The direct light gets lights directly from light source, but the global light gets lights indirectly by interreflections among complicated geometrical components. In this paper, we studied a method for increasing the accuracy of separating direct light and global light components from a scene by using high frequency illumination pattern. For experiments, we applied the separating method of Nayar's and found the best configurations for the separation through the experiments. We improved the separation accuracy of direct and global light by measuring the value of unilluminated area, which depends on the characteristics of object. Furthermore, we enhanced invisible scene of the global light by applying the image filtering technique.

Current Architectural Facade Designs have been trending to increased glass areas resulting in increasing impact on interior lighting and daylighting. In regards to indoor environmental quality, the increase in window space has a large impact on the daylighting received which ultimately impacts the liveability of a space. Especially when considering seasons, in the summer, excessive daylighting can result in glare as well as put an increased load in conditioning the air space further reducing energy efficiency. As a result, in order to improve the sustainability performance of a building, it is important to limit the natural lighting exposure to properly meet the needs and conditions of the building occupants. One of the most representative features to limit excessive sunlight exposure, is to incorporate operable blind systems. To this end, this research has been based on simulations performance through the Radiance Program. Radiance is capable of analyzing performance of daylight and impact of sunlight. Through analysis of different slat angles and blind shapes, impact and minimization of energy usage was evaluated. Furthermore, seasonal analysis was performed in order to understand the effects of seasonal climate factors. Ultimately this research provides an analysis of operable blinds optimization and effects of blind shape, control factors and angle of shading.
Daylighting software is an important component to predict the performance of daylighting system in advance of a field demonstration study with installing them in buildings. PHOTOPIA is a powerful software to generate a candela distribution curve(CDC) of an active daylighting system like a tracking dish concentrator. With PHOTOPIA, a set of candela distribution curves was generated under clear sky conditions and different solar altitude angles. The candela distribution curves were then imported to RADIANCE for rendering and analysis on the daylighting performance of a tracking dish concentrator when it installed in a actual class room without windows. As a result, the daylight collection efficiency of the dish concentrator was 68.4% when we assumed that there was no tracking error. It was found that candela(cd) and total lumens(lm) increased with solar altitude rising, whereas the distribution angle was fixed. The illuminance uniformity on the work plane in the class room was relatively low, 0.12, while the illuminance uniformity on the area of $2.7m^2$ to which the light was illuminated was considerably high, 0.60. The maximum illuminance was 1,340lux with a solar altitude angle of 80 degrees.
