  • In this study, we evaluated the durability of concrete produced with recycled polymer that could replace synthetic polymer, which is the main raw material of bridge deck concrete pavement. As a result of the slump and air content test, the requirements of the Korea Highway Corporation Standard were satisfied with all mixing conditions. The slump was lowered when incorporating the recycled bio-polymer, compared to other mix proportions concrete. In contrast, the compressive strength was increased by 6.3~24.4% when the recycled bio-polymer was mixed, compared to the concrete produced with synthetic polymer. It should be noted that the compressive strength was lowered when synthetic polymer was added to concrete mixture. Durability test results showed the best durability when incorporating synthetic polymer. The durability of concrete also increased as the amount of recycled bio-polymer increased, however, the impact was slightly smaller than that of synthetic polymer.

  • The effects of slag content and polymer-binder ratio on the strength properties of autoclaved SBR-modified concretes using ground granulated blast-furnace slag(slag) and a styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR) latex are examined. As a result, the compressive and tensile strengths of the autoclaved SBR-modified concretes using slag increase with increasing slag content, and reach a maximum at a slag content 40%, and increase with increasing polymer-binder ratio. In particular, the autoclaved SBR-modified concretes with a slag content of 40% provide about three times higher tensile strength than unmodified concretes. Such high strength development is attributed to the high tensile strength of SBR polymer and the improved bond between cement hydrates and aggregates because of the addition of SBR latex.

  • This study was focused on the investigation of permeability of latex modified concrete as the latex content variated such as 5%, 10%, 15%, and 20%. The rapid chloride permeability test was used to evaluate the relative permeability of latex-modified concretes and conventional concretes. The results showed that the permeability of latex-modified concretes was considerably lower than conventional concretes tested, which may be due to the latex filled in voids and interconnections of hydrated cement and aggregates by a film of latex particles.

  • The bond strength of latex-modified concrete to normal portland cement concrete measured with direct pull-out test. Using $250\times1100\times1400$mm concrete slab as the base concrete, an overlay of the latex-modified concrete is applied and cured similar to bridge deck and then tested in direct pull-out. The test results not only give values of the bond strength of the overlay tested but also clearly indicate whether the failure is in the bond interface or the materials tested.

  • In this study, an impact resistance of concrete segmented composites adopted shell's structures which have the excellent impact resistance was assessed. In order to enhance the performances of concrete segmented composite, the bond strength of mortar between the concrete blocks should be improved. Hence, in this study polymer mortars were applied to increase the bond strength of mortar. From the results of bond tests, the 15% latex mortar was selected and static and low-velocity impact tests were carried out for the specimens applied the plain and latex mortar. The concrete segmented composites, of which the bond strength of mortar was enhanced, showed improved low-velocity impact resistances. A Nonlinear finite element analysis using the discrete crack model showed similar energy dissipating capacities to the impact test's results. Consequently, by improving the analysis models for segmented composites, the impact resistances for manifold variables can be predicted and assessed.
