  • Tunnels that have recently been constructed are characterized by longer length than ever before and furthermore they frequently go through the ground area with poor conditions such as fractured zones. If ground strength is weak, plastic deformation of tunnel occurs, and occasionally a big fall may be brought about. Up to now, the construction work of tunneling has been executed as a sequential method placing the lining concrete after completion of excavation. Such a method requires a long time and much money to complete the tunnel. It is hard to ensure the stability of tunnel if tunnel is left undone for a long time after excavation in fracture zones or plastic grounds. For this reason, we tried to take simultaneous construction of tunnel excavation and lining concrete in order to not only shorten construction schedule but also stabilize the tunnel at the highly fractures zone as soon as possible. As preliminary consideration for simultaneous construction, in-situ tests are performed to calculate the isolation distance over which blasting vibration does not influence the strength of lining concrete. Improvement of ling form, placing method of concrete, ventilation using a dust collector, together with equipment arrangement, was made to assure the simultaneous construction work.

  • Gangwon Province, located in the northeastern part of South Korea, is the coldest area in South Korea with 90% of the total area as mountainous. Therefore, tunnel damage has been reported continuously in winter. But there has been lack of researches on frost heave occurring behind tunnel lining. In this study, numerical analysis was conducted to investigate the frost depth in road tunnel constructed in Gangwon province. Based on the database on road tunnel and weather in Gangwon province, a standard tunnel shape and geotechnical properties of ground was determined. And then thermal analysis for the frost depth according to the temperature change and ground conditions were conducted. Analysis result showed that the sensitivity to frost heave of metamorphic rock and sedimentary rock is higher than sand. Lower initial ground temperature leads to deeper frost depth and consequently increases frost damage. In addition, lining thickness, specific heat capacity, and thermal conductivity also affect greatly on the variation of frost depth.

  • Interfacial properties between rock mass and shotcrete play a significant role in the transmission of loads from the ground to shotcrete. These properties have a major effect on the behaviours of rock mass and shotcrete. They, however, have merely been considered in most of numerical analyses, and little care has been taken in identifying them. This paper aimed to identify interfacial properties including cohesion, tension, friction angle, shear stiffness, and normal stiffness, through direct shear tests as well as interface normal compression tests for shotcrete/rock cores obtained from a tunnel sidewall. Mechanical properties such as compressive strength and elastic modulus were also measured to compare them with the time-dependent variation of interfacial properties. Based on the experiments, interfacial properties between rock and shotcrete showed a significant time-dependent variation similar to those of its mechanical properties. In addition, the time-dependent behaviours of interfacial properties could be well regressed through exponential and logarithmic functions of time.

  • Reinforced concrete (RC) shield tunnel lining must be designed for fireproof performance because the lining is sometimes exposed to very high temperature due to traffic accidents. Both experimental and numerical studies are carried out to evaluate fire resistance performance of precast RC tunnel lining systems. In the experimental studies, six full-scale precast RC tunnel segments are exposed to fire in order to examine the influence of various parameters on the fire resistance performance of precast RC tunnel lining. We used the temperature curve of the RABT criteria, which are severe conditions of fire temperatures. The fire test showed that the explosive spalling was not observed by substituting concrete to PP fiber reinforced concrete. A transient heat flow analysis was carried out in consideration of the material properties that change with temperature, and the results showed good agreement with the test results.

  • Precast Concrete Lining (PCL) is invented in order to resolve the problem of the cast-in-place concrete lining in Norway, However PCL could not consider the effect of earthquake because an earthquake rarely occurs in the region of Northern Europe, Consequently, the analysis of the effect of earthquake on PCL should be made before introducing PCL to Korea. The purpose of this research is to evaluate the stability of tunnel applying PCL in the case of earthquake. To evaluate the seismic performance of PCL, we used shaking table apparatus by 1/5 scale down model. The result of this research is as shows that deep tunnells satisfied for Korea seismic design criteria.
